This month s Clover Connection is full of opportunities for the next several months and you will want to mark your calendars so as not to miss any of the great events planned for Polk County 4-H members. Many 4-H Clubs use the Clover Connection as a part of their meeting agenda. Attending Club meetings and getting involved in club activities is an important part of the 4-H program. Meetings are where educational events and activities are discussed and promoted, and it s a chance to have any questions you may have about them answered. Parents should attend meetings too, because that helps with communication and makes sure your child doesn t miss events that would enhance his or her 4-H experience. Here are some more ideas about club meetings- 10 Ways To Make Sure Your Club Succeeds! 1. Attend all club meetings with your children. 2. Arrive early and help the club prepare for the meeting. 3. Share your appreciation for the leaders who work with your club and take an active part in the meeting and to be able to help the club. 4. Praise the youth officers and other 4-H leaders for the work they do and the leadership they provide. 5. Cheerfully volunteer to accept responsibility in the club. 6. By your example of enthusiasm, help others to support the club s programs and activities. 7. Welcome visitors and new members and help them feel a part of your club. 8. Share in discussion on club matters and give your support. 9. Support your children s project leaders and ask them how you can help your children with work at home. 10. Thank your club advisors or your children s project leaders for working with your children. Mentoring new families and members can also strengthen a 4-H club as well as help them learn more about the 4-H program and its many opportunities. Clover Connection February, 2017 Your Club Represented When the Money Gets Spent????? The Polk County 4-H Leaders Federation Board of Directors is a very important group for the Polk County 4-H program. This board oversees the program and makes very important decisions about how and where the financial resources of the program get spent. They also provide direction for the educational programs. Is your club being represented?? Each club can send one adult and one youth member as representatives to the board. Youth have an equal voice at the table. L November 27, 2017 7:00 p.m. B.L. Becoming a 4-H Volunteer 4-H Volunteers are valued partners in working with our youth and help make 4-H possible. In order to volunteer, previous 4-H Youth Development experience is not necessary. The most important qualification is a desire to work with young people and help them grow through educational experiences and gain positive life skills. Please consider sharing your time and talents! Adult volunteers working together with youth make a difference in the lives of young people. Volunteers work with UW-Extension professionals to develop the life skills of youth members, thus benefiting the state, employers, and the economy. Volunteers extend the resources of UW-Extension as they work with staff to deliver educational programs. Volunteering is a privilege. How does one become a volunteer? If you have not already done so, go to Wisconsin 4HOnline and create a family profile. Instructions can be found on the polk.uwex.edu website under the 4H enrollment tab. If your family is already in the system, do not create a new family profile, just make sure you are entered into your family account and check that you want to be a 4-H volunteer. A background check will be conducted on you by the state and you will be contacted by GIS through e-mail requesting additional information needed in order for the state to conduct the background check and begin your Volunteer in Preparation (VIP) process. Another step in the process, you can take the Online Mandated Reporter Training for 4-H Volunteers. Please see the informational sheet included in the November 2016 Clover Connection or visit the polk.uwex.edu website. You can also contact the Polk County Extension Office at 715.485.8600 for assistance. Once the background check is successfully completed and you have completed the Online Mandated Reporter Training for 4-H Volunteers, there is one more important step in the process; taking the Volunteer in Preparation (VIP) Training! Clover Connection February, 2017 It s Winter Again!! Yes, it is that time, again!! Winter weather can be very unpredictable and due to that some UW-Extension programs may have to be cancelled without much notice. Evening program cancellations will be done by 4:00 p.m. Youth Leaders - How About Being a Camp Counselor? Have you ever thought about being a 4-H Summer Camp Counselor? It is a great youth leadership experience working with campers and other teens, plus it is FUN!! Counselors need to be at least a freshman in high school, and be interested in working with other kids. Counselor applicants fill out the application at the end of this newsletter, and attend a short interview on Monday, February 27 from 5:00-6:00 p.m. at the Extension in the Polk County Government Center. ATTENTION SHEEP PROJECT MEMBERS! Plan now to attend the Sheep Project Kick-Off meeting on March 12, 2017 starting at 2:00 pm at the Polk County Justice Center. Senior project members and members of the sheep committee will be on hand to present information about the project and to answer questions relating to the project including classes and fair registration. There will be a show clinic presented by youth leaders, and a brief session just for parents. Pre-registration is not necessary, however, if you are participating in the Quality Meats Program (showing a market lamb) this does count as one of your educational events. Wisconsin 4-H has created a series of new Cloverbud Learning Activities available for downloading at http://fyi.uwex.edu/wi4hcloverbuds/activ ity-plans/ Activity sheets include: The Polk County Fair Board is again sponsoring an outdoor sign contest to promote the Polk County Fair. The sign must be at least four feet by eight feet (4x8). You must include the Polk County Fair dates of July 27, 28, 29, and 30, 2017, St. Croix Falls, and your club name must appear on the sign. The signs should be up by July 1 st. The sign needs to be on private land - and not on the road right of way. Please contact landowners for permission. Clover Connection February, 2017 Performance Arts Festival Date Set! Once again Polk and Barron Counties are joining up to host a Performance Arts Festival on Saturday, April 8, 2017, at Turtle Lake High School. Like the last several years, this event is a combined Pre-Fair performance opportunity for premiums (like the Music, Drama, and Dance Revues of the past) and a club performance opportunity for non-premiums (like the Talent Explosions of the past) all rolled into one performance arts extravaganza!! Registration forms for pre-fair performance are available in this February newsletter and registration forms for club performances are in the February Club Organizational mailing. Youth wishing to have their individual or duet music, dance, or speaking events as part of the 2017 Polk County Fair will in addition to registering for the April event, need to include it on their fair entry form due in June. WISCONSIN STATE FAIR DAIRY PROMOTION BOARD SCHOLARSHIPS The Wisconsin State Fair Dairy Promotion Board is offering $1,000 scholarships, for use during the 2017-18 school year, to third and fourth-year college students pursuing dairy-related or food science degrees at one of Wisconsin s four-year universities. Additional $1,000 scholarships will be offered to high school seniors planning to pursue a dairy-related or food science degree at one of Wisconsin s four-year universities or students studying in a two-year, technical school program related to dairy or food science. Applicants will be evaluated on involvement and leadership in dairy-related activities, scholastic achievement, and career objectives. Finalists will be interviewed in mid-april, with the recipients to be recognized at the 2017 Wisconsin State Fair. Clover Connection February, 2017 ATTENTION: 4H Horse Project Members - Horse Camp Save the Date!!! We are beginning plans for Horse Camp 2017!!! When: June 20-23 th, 2017 (Jr. and Sr. Counselors will arrive June 19th) Who: All 4H Horse and Pony Project Members that are 4th grade and older are welcome to apply applicants must be signed up for the 4H Horse Project in 4H-Online. In addition, those that plan to attend camp will need be able to fully care for their horse, including feeding, grooming and saddling AND be able to ride their horse independently. Watch for the camp application & more information to be in the March 2017 clover connection! Horse Project Youth that are 7th grade & older - you will be able to apply as potential counselors! Please make sure you are signed up for Horse/Youth Leadership in 4H-online. What is Horse Camp? Horse Camp is a 4-day, 3-night camp for 4H Horse Project Members 4 th Grade and older. It is held at the Polk County Fair Park in St. Croix Falls, WI. Project members attend camp with their horses learning and gaining skills and confidence both in and out of the saddle. Each day Campers will attend sessions in various riding disciplines and some fun educational opportunities. Horse Camp is a wonderful time for our project members to not only improve their knowledge and skills while working with their horse but also build some great memories with other horse loving youth! Campers are guided through their week by Youth Leader Camp Counselors. This year camp will be held June 20, 21,22 and 23 Campers must commit to attending all 4 days of camp without exception. Clover Connection February, 2017 2017 Polk County Quality Meats Swine Identification Process There will not be a spring weigh-in registration for swine in Polk County in 2017. Animals will still need to be self-identified. 2017 Polk County Quality Meats Swine Identification process will be similar to last year. Please read this information carefully and direct any questions to Tim Swenson (Chair) 715.491.8161 or Barry Elwood (Vice-Chair) 715.554.3783 or the Polk County Extension Office 715.485.8600. As in the past few years, there will not be a spring weigh-in for swine, however animals will still need to be registered with Polk County Quality Meats tags and DNA samples taken. Like last year, the Quality Meats program has ordered DNA registration sampling kits for all exhibitors. Exhibitors will not have to order their own DNA kit. Swine exhibitors will tag their animals themselves and take DNA samples and mail those samples into the Wisconsin Livestock Identification Consortium (WLIC). Polk County Quality Meats Tag numbers must be included with the samples submitted for DNA analysis. Tags and kits will be handed out during the following times only!!! Sheep and Goat Weigh-In April 29 from 9:00 a.m. 11:00 a.m. at the Fair Park (DO NOT BRING YOUR PIGS TO PICK UP YOUR TAGS!!!) MAQA Training, March 30, 7:00 p.m. tags and DNA Kits available prior to the program start time. There is an qualifying educational workshop that evening starting at 6:00 p.m. Full participation in both events meets your educational requirements for the program. May 1, 2, or 3 rd from 8:30 a.m. 4:30 p.m. at the Polk County Extension Office. $5.00 per kit will be required at the time of pick up. Clover Connection February, 2017 Annual 4-H Volunteer Leader Training VIP Volunteer In Preparation As part of the 4-H Club Charter process, each county will be offering annual volunteer leader training. Each club is encouraged to have one participant attending these annual trainings to bring the information back to the clubs. The training will be valuable for all youth and adult leaders, and anyone is welcome to attend. This year s training will be the new VIP Volunteers In Preparation and will be offered Monday, February 27 at 7:00 p.m. at the Government Center in Balsam Lake. For this year only, the Annual 4-H Volunteer Leader Training is the same training for new volunteers. This will be an opportunity for any leader to learn more about the new training and to interact with other volunteers both new and experienced. We are looking forward to a great evening of interactive discussions and learning from each other. Supporting 4-H volunteers in their role and strengthening the 4-H Club are top priorities for Wisconsin. It is critical that volunteers have the support, tools, and training they need to be effective in helping youth gain the most they can from their 4-H experience. Wisconsin 4-H & Youth Conference will bring together young people in grades 7-10 from around the state to the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus for four days of learning and fun June 26-29, 2017. Youth will travel by bus with others from Northwestern Wisconsin. This will be a great opportunity to enhance your 4-H leadership skills, gain in-depth project or activity knowledge and meet other youth from around the state! Youth from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences will come together to exchange ideas, form friendships and learn important skills they can use to contribute to their communities. This is an award trip for youth that show strong 4-H participation. The cost for this experience including transportation runs over $375.00, but the Polk County 4-H Leaders Federation has generously agreed to pay all costs except a $25.00 fee for first time participants. (Certain seminars have additional costs which are the responsibility of the delegate. Personal spending money is delegate s responsibility. Youth may attend again with additional fees). If for some reason youth do not attend without canceling before deadline or are sent home from the experience, the entire cost of the trip will need to be repaid to the Polk County 4-H Leaders Federation. 2017 Wisconsin State Fair DNA/RFID Animal Identification Youth interested in showing market beef, sheep, swine, OR breeding stock commercial heifers/crossbred gilts/wether type ewes & rams at the 2017 Wisconsin State Fair Junior Show will need to have their animal projects DNA/RFID identified by the State Fair eligibility deadlines listed below. This identification system allows animals which are DNA/RFID identified through the Wisconsin Livestock Identification Consortium (WLIC) County and State Fair program to meet State Fair Identification requirements if the process is completed (all forms returned and samples on file) by the Wisconsin State Fair identification deadline postmarks listed. Wisconsin State Fair will accept all DNA/RFID samples submitted through WLIC by the Wisconsin State Fair identification deadline postmark. Samples received after the Wisconsin State Fair identification deadline postmark will be accepted; however, the animal associated with the samples will have limited State Fair eligibility. Visit the WLIC website (www.wiid.org) to verify which counties are participating in the statewide DNA/RFID identification program.
