Feasibility Study École Georges Vanier, CSCNO Our Lady of Fatima / Our Lady of Lourdes, HSCDSB September 9, 2014 Prepared by 255, rue Larch Sudbury (Ontario) P3B 1M2 N o 1340 1

The objective of the project: is to examine the potential for redevelopment of the existing school in order to reduce the existing area of these schools and thus increase their efficiency. 2

Project Data Grade JK to 8 School for CSCNO: gymnasium with stage/storage library 7 teaching spaces daycare lobby spaces for administration and personnel washrooms within the school s section playground dedicated to the school safe access for loading and unloading of bus passengers 3

Grade JK to 8 School for HSCDSB: gymnasium with stage/storage library 15 teaching spaces daycare lobby spaces for administration and personnel washrooms within the school s section playground dedicated to the school safe access for loading and unloading of bus passengers 4

Survey of Existing Conditions The main entrance to École Georges Vanier does not clearly distinguish the location and identity of the Francophone Catholic School. Similarly, the main entrance to Our Lady of Fatima School does not clearly distinguish the location and identity of the Anglophone Catholic School. École Georges Vanier s administration office is not visible from the school s main entrance. The entrance is controlled by an electric door lock and a video camera in the secretary s office allows for surveillance. 5

Survey of Existing Conditions École Georges Vanier s lobby also serves to provide access to the gymnasium for the Anglophone School, which results in mixed circulation of students from the Anglophone and the Francophone schools. The main entrance is surrounded by the parking area. This area is used by visitors to both schools and is very congested. 6

Survey of Existing Conditions Buses pick up and drop off passengers on a neighbouring property that belongs to Paroisse Ste Marie. Francophone students must use an exterior stairway to reach the buses parked on the church s property. Moreover, Anglophone students access their buses in an area that is part of the parking lot, which gives rise to unsafe conditions due to the circulation of vehicles and students in the same area. The playgrounds surrounding the building conform to the many slopes in the terrain. Therefore, there are not many flat areas where children can play. 7

Survey of Existing Conditions Over the years, some of the existing classrooms in the Francophone school have taken advantage of available spaces and removable walls to expand over a greater area. Many programs currently operate in rooms that are equivalent to two classrooms. 8

Survey of Existing Conditions The Francophone school is spread over two levels. Most classrooms are located on Level 1 with the administration offices and the shared gymnasium. The Francophone school s daycare program and the space occupied by its PAJE program are located on the lower level (Level 0). 9

Survey of Existing Conditions A number of classrooms located on Level 0 are currently being used as storage areas. Wheelchair access between the two levels is available by means of a lift. This small elevator is not sufficient for larger wheelchairs. The existing corridor of the Anglophone school is very narrow and becomes congested when students are accessing coat hangers which are located there. 10

Survey of Existing Conditions The Anglophone school is characterized by its relatively low ceilings. This adds to the perception of congestion in heavily frequented areas. The section of building occupied by the Anglophone school is in great need of renovation: new interior finishing, exterior doors, windows, etc. 11

Architectural Design The feasibility study adopted the following basic principles for the architectural design: express a clear and distinct identity for both schools; provided a safe main entrance and lobby, near the school buses and the parking area; ensure safe circulation of school buses; locate the administrative offices for each school near its respective main entrance and lobby; existing spaces are to be renovated with new interior finishing, new mechanical systems and new windows; locate the activities of each school on one level as much as possible, for minimal division of the school s operations. 12

Evaluation Grid: 1. A clear and independent identity for each of the two schools 2. A safe entrance and foyer, in proximity to the school buses, the parking area and the administrative offices 3. A safe circulation route for the school buses 4. The activities of each school on a single level 5. Disruption during construction 6. Efficient use of the property 13
