CENTRAL BOARD OF SECONDARY EDUCATION DELHI PRESS NOTE 31.05.2011 HIGHLIGHTS OF CLASS X 2011 EXAMINATIONS Under the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation Scheme (CCE) (A) Board Based external exam was held for The students of Class X studying in Senior Secondary Schools who wished to move out of the CBSE system after Class X (Pre-University, Vocational course, Change of Board, etc.) The students studying in CBSE s Secondary schools as the schools were up to class X only. (B) School based Exam was held for Students studying in CBSE s Senior Secondary schools and who did not wish to move out of the CBSE system after Class X. The schools conducted the Summative Assessment (SA) -II for Class IX during the first half of March, 2011; while the SA-II for Class-X was conducted during the second half of March, 2011. The Board had sent separate CDs containing Question Paper Banks for Classes IX & X and the school could : i) pick up one question paper for each subject, OR ii)mix and match the paper by using different questions/sections from different sets of question papers and prepare a question paper based on Board s sample paper, design and blue print, OR iii) prepare their own question papers as per sample paper, design and blue print given by CBSE. However, if the school prepared its own question papers, the question papers and marking scheme so prepared had to be Emailed to the Board for verification a week before conducting respective papers. Every School, Sahodaya Clusters or City could design their own Date sheet for IX and X examinations. School Based Evaluation A CD containing the Marking Scheme for main subjects was sent to every school separately. 1

The answer books were evaluated by teachers as per the marking scheme provided by the Board. Further, schools have been asked to preserve answer books of school based Summative Assessment -II for classes IX and X for at least a period of three years (in case of Class IX) and two years (in case of Class X) along with question papers and Marking Scheme for any verification by the Board subsequently. Verification of Evidence of Assessments (EAs) The Board did a random collection and verification of the Evidence of Assessments (EAs) conducted at school level. These Evidence of Assessments (EAs) and the grades awarded were verified by the subject experts appointed and empanelled by the Board at the Regional level. The experts submitted their report on the Evidence of Assessments (EAs) vis a vis award of grades. Their report helped in verifying the school based assessments as well as provided feedback to the Board about implementation of CCE scheme. The shortlisted schools were asked to send the Evidence of Assessments (EAs) initially in five subjects: Hindi, English, Mathematics, Science and Social Science comprising of the performance of five students taken from each of the three categories i.e. top, middle and bottom levels of achievements. Collection of Assessment Data of students The format of Certificate of Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation was issued by the Board. The Board finalized software for all schools to download List of Candidates with Roll No from Board s website; compile and upload term wise details in respect of each candidate. Details regarding this were intimated on board s website www.cbse.nic.in. The Board collected the assessment data electronically from all the schools. Schools were directed not to communicate the grades of Summative Assessment- II to the candidates of Class X under any circumstance. Certification by the Board There would be no difference between certificates issued by the board to the students under school based or board based Summative Assessment II. In 2011 similar certificate will be issued to all the candidates by the Board, whether they have appeared in the Board Based or School Based Summative Assessment-II. Meeting CCE goals The response of students opting out of board exam and taking school based exam has been very encouraging. Out of the total number of 10.6 lakhs class X student about 4.6 lakhs only appeared for X boards in 2011. Which means that approximately 67% of students preferred internal exam, which is also a desirable goal of CCE. Even for the rest of 4.6 lakhs students, most of them were either studying in secondary schools or switching schools or board and therefore had to take external exam compulsorily under CCE scheme. 2

Separate question papers in Science and Mathematics of Secondary (class X) level were provided for blind students. Verifications of Grades A. School Based Assessment Students who have appeared for school Based Examination would apply for verification of grades to the schools only and schools would verify their answer book and communicate the result.
