APPENDIX 1 Working in Catholic Schools A atement of Principles THE NATURE AND PURPOSE OF CATHOLIC SCHOOLS Inspired by the message and example of Jesus Christ, Catholic schools live out a distinctive educational vision. Supported by the Catholic community of which they are a vital part, they invite students and their families into a faith-filled educational experience. As a key ministry of parishes and the diocese, Catholic schools encourage and support parents in their responsibility for the faith formation of their children. This formation is supported by prayer and opportunities to participate in the life, mission and liturgy of the broader Catholic community. Our schools commit to: Nurturing each individual s growth in faith and unique potential Offering outstanding educational experiences founded on Catholic values Fostering partnership between parents and staff in the education of their children Creating communities of respect for each other, the wider society and the earth Encouraging active engagement in social justice issues, the service of others and the promotion of peace. Catholic schools are part of a long tradition of Catholic education provided by religious and lay teachers in Australia and this diocese for over 180 years. They fulfil parents rights to choose schooling for their children which reflects their own values, beliefs and hopes. RATIONALE FOR CATHOLIC SCHOOLS All engaged in the enterprise of Catholic education commit to the values and tenets of the Church as revealed by the Good News. As disciples of Jesus, we strive to become more like him as we continue to grow in faith. Our faith is expressed in relationship with one another, and in our communities, both local and global. The Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle Catholic system of schools states in its Vision atement;...at the heart of everything there is always Jesus Christ Faith encompasses all aspects of school planning and school life. It is fundamental to our schools improvement process. The Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle Catholic community desires its schools to be communities of an authentic and lived faith and places where our students can experience the joy and hope of the Gospel story. As a staff member in the Catholic school you are called upon to be more than an employee. You are called to help create a community that bears witness to the world of beauty and goodness of creation and of humanity (Pope Francis, Vatican City, 7 June 2013). The Catholic school therefore, is more than an educational institution; it is a key part of the Church and an essential element in the Church s mission of making Christ known and loved to the world. Every employee in the Catholic school has an indispensable and active role to play as witnesses of our mission in Catholic education and is expected to commit to: i. be appropriately qualified ii. iii. iv. regular on-going professional development meet the requirements of the Faith Education Accreditation (FEA) policy an inclusive approach to Education v. respect and support the Catholic educational philosophy of the school and Diocese vi. vii. viii. maintain an adequate understanding of those aspects of Catholic teaching that touch upon your daily tasks by your teaching and personal example, strive to inculcate in students an appreciation and acceptance of Christian teaching and values avoid, whether by word, action or known life-style, any influence upon students that is contrary to the teaching and values of the Church community in whose name you act.
