About the MLC: No formal classroom instruction is conducted in the MLC. You work individually and get spot help as needed from the teachers and student assistants who are on duty. During the first day in class you will receive an assignment sheet that contains a detailed schedule of daily assignments, hand-in assignments, and a test schedule. Assignment sheets are also accessible on the MLC website: www.ivcc.edu/mlc under the course descriptions link. We have found that if you get behind schedule you will either find it necessary to withdraw or you will fail the course. Periodic progress checks will be made as indicated on your assignment sheet, so don t fall behind. If you complete all course requirements early we will excuse you from class for the remainder of the semester. Remember, you are responsible for your own work. If you are caught cheating, you will receive a grade of 0 for that assignment and an academic dishonesty report will be submitted to Student Affairs to go into your file. Cell phones must be put away when you are in possession of a test. STUDY HINTS 1. a) Work the assignments in the order they are listed on your course outline, checking off assignments as you complete them. b) Work through each step of every example. Ask for help when you get stuck. c) Keep a notebook with vocabulary words, procedures, and examples. Be sure to learn the meanings of vocabulary words and formulas. d) Study the assigned material carefully. 2. Do not expect to do all of your studying during regular class time. Outside study (a minimum of 4 hours per week) will be necessary to enable you to stay on schedule. Much of your class time is needed for asking questions, getting help and taking quizzes and tests. 3. Peer tutoring is available if needed. If interested, see an instructor. You may also contact Cathi Nelson in D-201 or call her at (815)224-0479. Assistance in peer tutoring needs to be scheduled outside your regular class time. 4. You may be eligible for academic accommodations if you have a documented physical, psychiatric (anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, AD/HD, post-traumatic stress, or others) or cognitive disability such as a learning disability. If you need more information regarding possible accommodations, please contact Tina Hardy at (tina_hardy@ivcc.edu, 224-0284) or stop by office C-211. 5. Please be considerate of other students and silence your cell phone. ATTENDANCE (GOOD ATTENDANCE AND STAYING ON SCHEDULE ARE YOUR KEYS TO SUCCESS!) 1. Attendance is required at your scheduled time. You must use your student ID to check in and check out at the Attendance Station by the instructor s desk. IVCC s attendance policy, as stated in the current IVCC catalog, says "Students are expected to attend all classes regularly. If absence is unavoidable, it is the student's responsibility to explain the absence to his instructor and arrange to complete any work missed." Please call or email us if you are absent. 2. Attendance and progress will be evaluated periodically. At midterm, March 9, and at the last day for student withdrawal, April 12, students who are behind in their assignments and have attended fewer than 80% of their classes will be dropped from the class unless a formal request to remain in the class is made. Withdrawal from a course can affect financial aid. Students who receive financial aid should see an advisor in the Financial Aid Office before withdrawing from a course. Staying on schedule is the best way to avoid being withdrawn. 2
3. Students who cannot complete ALL course requirements before the end of the semester should withdraw before the final date for student withdrawal occurs. Students may submit their own withdrawal from a class through Webadvisor or talk to an instructor who may submit the withdrawal. NOTE WELL! Students not withdrawn who do not complete the course will receive a grade of F. **NOTE**---> A grade of incomplete may be given to students who have good attendance (as described in item 4 above) and have all but one unit finished. This is a gift of extra time to work and does not affect your ability to begin your next math course. The MLC staff will discuss this option after midterm with students who qualify. Students with poor attendance will not qualify for the Incomplete. If you cannot make up your mind on this issue, ask your instructor for advice. Textbook Homework Read each section of your book, taking notes and learning vocabulary as you go. Pay close attention to the author s examples and complete the Now Try exercises in the margin. Be sure to check your answers at the bottom of the margin. Work the problems in the Exercises as assigned. These should be done on either loose leaf paper in a 3-ring binder OR in a spiral-bound notebook. Procedure1: Textbook homework Please use pencil and work the homework problems following the homework template provided at the student workstations. (number the problems, show your work and be neat!) A page of answers is not sufficient. Be sure to check your answers in the back of the book. If you don t understand, go to Study Plan for additional practice, ask a lab worker for assistance or go to peer tutoring. MyMathLab (MML) MyMathLab is an on-line program. You will be scheduled to work in MyMathLab as indicated on the course schedule. The first log-in must be done in class; thereafter, practice and homework assignments can be done on any computer with internet access. MML Homework -- MMLs are homework assignments in MyMathLab. MML Homework will be counted as part of your course grade. *When completing MML Homework follow Procedure 2. Procedure 2: MML Homework The minimum REQUIRED score on MMLs is 100%. Problems may be done over and over until a score of 100 is received by clicking on the similar exercise button at the bottom of the screen. You must show your work neatly in your notebook, i.e. number the problems, show your work and be neat! 3
MML Quizzes All quizzes are online and contained in MML. Quizzes must be done in class and are password protected. You MAY use your book, your notes and your guided notes during a quiz. When a quiz is due, follow Procedure 3. Procedure 3: Quizzes To take a quiz, show your completed book and MML homework to an instructor. Be sure to have the instructor initial your assignment sheet in the space provided. Your work should be done neatly in your notebook with the problems numbered and all work shown appropriately. Upon completion of the quiz, click submit. The minimum required score on quizzes is 80%. o If you score 80 or higher, click review and go over the quiz with an instructor or student helper.then, you may continue in the chapter or take the test as appropriate. o If you score below 80, you should click review and ask an MLC staff person to go over any problems that you missed before you retake it. He or she may direct you to additional practice problems either in your book or in the Study Plan section of MML before you retake the quiz. When your quiz is completed, be sure to click review and go over any missed questions. o If, after your 2 nd try, you still are below 80, a visit to peer tutoring will be required before you can ask an instructor for a 3 rd try. Your score will be the highest of the three. Tests Tests are pencil-paper. Tests must be done in one sitting without the benefit of book or notes. You may use scratch paper and a pencil. For tests 4-6 and the final exam, a scientific calculator may be used. When you are ready to take the test follow Procedure 4. Cell phones must be put away when you are in possession of a test for any reason. Remember to ask questions prior to the testing moment! During a test, you may ask no more than 3 content questions! Procedure 4: Tests When you are ready for a test complete a blue test request card. When completed, turn in your test with your work shown neatly on the test and any scratch paper to an instructor. (If you use scratch paper please number your work.) If your test is not graded before you leave, be sure to check your grade in the grade book portion of MML. Test results are emailed to you if you are no longer here once your test is graded. Always ask to see and go over your test with an instructor. The minimum required score on a test is 75%. If you score lower than a 75, you will be given appropriate review work and will be required to retake the test. You may also retake a test to raise your grade before progressing to the next chapter. The first time you MTH take a test 0906 the maximum PROPOSED score SCHEDULE is 100; the second FALL time 2015 it is 91, the third time it is 82 and all subsequent times it is 75. If you need to retake a test, you need to plan on coming in extra time to do so. TEXTBOOK = TEXT MYMATHLAB = MML The final exam is comprehensive and may be taken only once. Be sure to allow 2 hours for the test. 4
