BOS 4010, Safety Supervisor Course Syllabus Course Description Explores the tools needed to understand and deal with the unique role and project management responsibilities of safety supervisors and safety project managers. Various sample forms as presented by the National Safety Council are included along with case study scenarios for student review and commentary. Course Summary Today s workplace has positioned safety supervisors and safety project managers as the main conduit between the workforce and management. As a safety supervisor, you are responsible for continuing employee training, maintaining quality of work, conducting accident investigations, and promoting employee motivation. The first three units of this course are devoted to basic safety knowledge and skills that every supervisor or safety project manager must attain. An understanding of loss control and the fundamentals of safety management, communication between upper management and the workforce, an exploration of the principles of behavior-based safety approach, and a basic overview of employee training, inspection procedures, and incident investigations are featured. Units IV through VI will focus on what every member of management needs to understand to meet OSHA and other regulatory standards. Topics include industrial hygiene, personal protection equipment, ergonomics, hazard communication, and a verity of other common regulatory issues. Unit VII and VIII are dedicated to the principles of reducing property damage and loss through an understanding of electrical and fire safety regulations. Throughout this course, various sample forms as presented by the National Safety Council are included along with Case Study Scenarios for student review and commentary. Course Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students should be able to: 1. Recognize the safety supervisor's goals and responsibilities in the workplace, both up and down the corporate ladder. 2. Identify and evaluate chemical and physical hazards in the workplace. 3. Define acceptable levels of risk for department operations. 4. Define and assess control of hazards to prevent injuries, illness, and property damage. 5. Discuss the concepts and development of an employee safety program. 6. Explain how to choose and use PPE and conduct job safety analyses. 7. Discuss employee injury record keeping and analysis. 8. Summarize the role of ergonomics in the workplace. 9. Explain how to conduct safety inspections and incident investigations. 10. Differentiate between Safety and Environmental responsibilities for supervisors regarding major federal, state, and local regulatory mandates, including instances where the responsibilities overlap. 11. Recognize the principles of machine safeguarding and safe use of hand and portable power tools. 12. Illustrate key elements of safe materials handling and storage. 13. Credits Upon completion of this course, the students will earn three (3) hours of college credit. Course Structure 1. Study Guide: Each unit contains a Study Guide that provides students with the learning outcomes, unit lesson, required reading assignments, and supplemental resources. 2. Learning Outcomes: Each unit contains Learning Outcomes that specify the measurable skills and knowledge students should gain upon completion of the unit. 3. Unit Lesson: Each unit contains a Unit Lesson, which discusses lesson material. 4. Reading Assignments: Each unit contains Reading Assignments from one or more chapters from the textbook and/or outside resources. 5. Suggested Reading: Suggested Readings are listed in each unit s study guide. Students are encouraged to read the resources listed if the opportunity arises, but they will not be tested on their knowledge of the Suggested Readings. 6. Learning Activities (Non-Graded): These non-graded Learning Activities are provided to aid students in their course of study. 7. Unit Quizzes: This course contains three Unit Quizzes, one to be completed at the end of Units II, IV, and VI. Quizzes are used to give students quick feedback on their understanding of the unit material and are composed of multiple-choice questions. 8. Unit Assessments: This course contains four Unit Assessments, one to be completed at the end of Units I, III, V, and VII. Assessments are composed of multiple-choice questions and written-response questions. 9. Unit Assignments: Students are required to submit for grading Unit Assignments in Units I-VI. Specific information and instructions regarding these assignments are provided below. Grading rubrics are included with each assignment. Specific information about accessing these rubrics is provided below. 10. Final Exam: Students are to complete a Final Exam in Unit VIII. All Final Exams are proctored- see below for additional information. You are permitted four (4) hours to complete this exam in the presence of your approved proctor. This is an open-book exam. Only course textbooks and a calculator, if necessary, are allowed when taking proctored exams. The Final Exam is composed of multiple choice questions. 11. Ask the Professor: This communication forum provides you with an opportunity to ask your professor general or course content related questions. 12. Student Break Room: This communication forum allows for casual conversation with your classmates. CSU Online Library The CSU Online Library is available to support your courses and programs. The online library includes databases, journals, e-books, and research guides. These resources are always accessible and can be reached through the library webpage. Unit Assignments Unit I PowerPoint Presentation Safety Management and Communication Create a 7- to 10-slide presentation on the topic of Safety Management and Communication. You may use various sources, including your textbook. Be sure to cite any sources used in a reference slide with proper APA formatting. (Cover and reference slides do not count in the total.) You may also use the slide notes function to explain slide contents as necessary. Be sure to include the following in your presentation: trends and principles of safety, health, and environmental management, including team-based organizations, elements of initiating a safety management system, influencing and managing change, the communication process and methods, and listening, interviewing, and consulting techniques. Unit II Scholarly Activity Behavior-Based Safety (BBS) DO IT Method This project addresses the application of the scientific methods of Behavior-Based Safety (BBS) to improving intervention. Pick a job at your place of work or a job that relates to this material, and discuss how the DO IT Method can aid in improving the behavior of employee(s). The project is required to be a minimum of 500 words in length (or a minimum of two pages double-spaced). You should follow APA style and referencing guidelines and choose articles from journals available on the CSU Online Library database. You may also use any website as a resource. The Business Source Complete database within the CSU Online Library is the best source of journals for safety related articles. Unit III PowerPoint Presentation Employee Involvement and Safety and Health Inspections Create a 7- to 10-slide presentation on the topic of Employee Involvement and Safety and Health Inspections. You may use various sources, including your textbook. Be sure to cite any sources used in a reference slide with proper APA formatting. (Cover and reference slides do not count in the total.) Unit IV Case Study Incident Investigation Read Case III located on pages 560-562 in your textbook. Once you have read all of the materials, write an incident report utilizing the Guide for Identifying Causal Factors & Corrective Actions located on pages 156-160 in the textbook. What are your findings? What is/are your recommended corrective action(s)? Who is at fault, if anyone? Could this have been averted? How, or why? The project is required to be a minimum of 500 words (or a minimum of two pages double-spaced). Unit V PowerPoint Presentation Personal Protective Equipment and Ergonomics Create a 7- to 10-slide presentation on the topic of Personal Protective Equipment and Ergonomics. You may use various sources, including your textbook. Be sure to cite any sources used in a reference slide with proper APA formatting. (Cover and reference slides do not count in the total.) You may also use the slide notes function to explain slide contents as necessary. Be sure to include the following in your presentation: personal protective equipment (PPE) program, types of PPE available, issues related to ergonomics, principles and goals of ergonomics, and examples of how to reduce ergonomic problems. Unit VI Case Study Bhopal, India The incident investigation should deal with the chemical accident presented below. The case study should include the following components: a brief introduction of the scene and the accident, safety and health impacts of the accident, a statement on the legal aspects of the incident, an analysis of the key points from a project management perspective about the incident and accident, and a summary of the article s conclusions and your own opinions. The Bhopal Incident: On 2 December1984, a pesticide factory owned by an American multinational, the Union Carbide Corporation, leaked a large amount of poisonous gas into the air surrounding a small and impoverished town called Bhopal, India. The immediate death toll has been estimated to be around 7,000 people, and the death toll from long-term health problems now stands at 25,000 and a further 25,000 people in the slums around the factory continue to be poisoned by the chemicals that have been left behind. Conduct a case study on this disaster identifying safety management, safety audits, accident investigation, and industrial hygiene issues. Requirements: The project is required to be a minimum of 500 words in length (or a minimum of two pages double-spaced). You should follow APA style and referencing guidelines and choose articles from journals available on the CSU Online Library database. You may also use any website as a resource. APA Guidelines The application of the APA writing style shall be practical, functional, and appropriate to each academic level, with the primary purpose being the documentation (citation) of sources. CSU requires that students use APA style for certain papers and projects. Students should always carefully read and follow assignment directions and review the associated grading rubric when available. Students can find CSU s Citation Guide by clicking here. This document includes examples and sample papers and provides information on how to contact the CSU Success Center. Grading Rubrics This course utilizes analytic grading rubrics as tools for your professor in assigning grades for all learning activities. Each rubric serves as a guide that communicates the expectations of the learning activity and describes the criteria for each level of achievement. In addition, a rubric is a reference tool that lists evaluation criteria and can help you organize your efforts to meet the requirements of that learning activity. It is imperative for you to familiarize yourself with these rubrics because these are the primary tools your professor uses for assessing learning activities. Rubric categories include: (1) Assessment (Written Response) and (2) Assignment. However, it is possible that not all of the listed rubric types will be used in a single course (e.g., some courses may not have Assessments). The Assessment (Written Response) rubric can be found embedded in a link within the directions for each Unit Assessment. However, these rubrics will only be used when written-response questions appear within the Assessment. Each Assignment type (e.g., article critique, case study, research paper) will have its own rubric. The Assignment rubrics are built into Blackboard, allowing students to review them prior to beginning the Assignment and again once the Assignment has been scored. This rubric can be accessed via the Assignment link located within the unit where it is to be submitted. Students may also access the rubric through the course menu by selecting Tools and then My Grades. Again, it is vitally important for you to become familiar with these rubrics because their application to your Assessments and Assignments is the method by which your instructor assigns all grades. Final Examination Guidelines Final Exams are to be administered to students by an approved Proctor. CSU approves two, flexible proctoring options: a standard Proctor, who is chosen by the student and approved by the university, or Remote Proctor Now (RP Now), an ondemand, third-party testing service that proctors examinations for a small fee. Students choosing RP Now must have an operational webcam/video with audio, a high-speed Internet connection, and the appropriate system rights required to download and install software.
