This is the application for incoming 9 th or 10 th graders who wish to be considered for admission into the Pre-IB Scholars Academy at Miami Beach Senior High School. Students and parents are encouraged to review this application together before submission. It is suggested that you retain a copy for your records. The application must be legibly filled out and mailed, along with any necessary transcripts, to the Scholars Office: Miami Beach Senior High School Scholars Office Attn: Sylvia Carro 2231 Prairie Avenue Miami Beach, FL 33139 sacarro@dadeschools.net Parents may assist their children in completing all parts of the application EXCEPT the short response questions on the final page. Please read all parts of the application carefully. There are important instructions for curricular alignment and gifted classification inside. The deadline for priority admissions is January 15th, 2018. Priority applicants are considered without concern for space constraints. Applications are accepted after January 15, but transfer students are at the discretion of the transfer process once the application process has closed which will be before Spring Break 2018. Private School Students The admissions committee will need a sealed copy of your official school transcripts for every school you have attended in the 6 th, 7 th and 8 th grades. Mail transcripts to the Scholars Office at the address given previously. Your application is not complete until your transcripts are received. Gifted Classification Students who are classified as gifted will be placed in at least one self-contained gifted section. Students who have never attended public school are typically not designated as gifted by the State of Florida. The Scholars Academy accepts both gifted and non-gifted students, and gifted designation is not considered in admissions decisions; however, while gifted students may take non-gifted Scholars Academy courses, students who have not been designated as gifted may not sit in self-contained gifted sections. Gifted sections are typically scheduled for 9 th and 10 th grades only. There are no gifted sections of AP or IB classes. If you would like to inquire about your current gifted classification, please contact Ms. Maggie Guenin, Gifted Coordinator, at mguenin1@dadeschools.net. It is incumbent upon students and parents to verify their current gifted designation. We will ultimately seat students according to their gifted designation at the time of their enrolment at Miami Beach Senior High. Both gifted and non-gifted classes are available in the Scholars Academy. The traditional curriculum sequence in Mathematics and Science for late middle school and early high school for Miami- Dade County Public Schools is as follows: Mathematics: Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II Science: Physical Science, Biology, Chemistry If you are considering entering the Scholars Academy from a private school or other setting that does not follow the MDCPS curriculum sequence, we require taking Physical Science and Algebra I in anticipation of matriculation to the Scholars Academy. It is often possible to complete these courses online through Florida Virtual School at www.flvs.net or through Dual Enrollment at Miami-Dade College in the summer before the freshman year. Please contact Charmaine Williams, Scholars Academy Counselor, at cwilliams3@dadeschools.net for more information.
