Have your child put a tennis ball, soccer ball, yo-yo, or skipping rope in their knapsack to play with outside. April sees the highpoint of the Church Calendar as we celebrate Easter on April 1st and the Easter Season. Not only is there rejoicing over the Easter message, but there is also a flourish of new life as spring erupts around us. As we step into the season of spring and as new life begins to appear, we must be ready to turn on the marvelous light of the Resurrection. In turning on the light, let us recommit to being sacramental people. This means that we are invited to bring the message of the risen Lord to all those we meet. In the light of the risen Lord, we will celebrate the great feast of Easter. Enjoy the Easter season with your families. Have a wonderful Easter! Page 2 Inclement Weather Reminder and Bus Cancellations Our school is in Zone 8. Listen to the radio stations CKSY or CFCO or check out the MySBI App. Please remember, when schools are closed due to inclement weather, do not send your child(ren) to school. Focus on Faith April 1 starts the Easter journey for us this year. We will continue to celebrate the Easter season until May 20, 2018. Our culture wants us to think that Easter lasts for one weekend but our Church, in her wisdom, celebrates the resurrection of Christ for 50 days. It is the greatest hope of our faith. It tells us that no matter what weighs us down deadlines, illnesses, deaths, disappointments they are not the end of the story. Resurrection or New Life will follow for the faithful who place their hope in Jesus. It is suitable then that we have changed our staff faith day to the Easter season. During the final term of the year, when teachers and students begin counting down the days to the end of the school year, the St. Clair Catholic staff will all receive a dose of Hope. Renewing our Passion and Purpose is the theme of this year s Faith Day for staff. It is being held on the April 27th faith day. We will be celebrating Mass together, presenting the Lighting the Way Award to exemplary staff members who were nominated by their peers and hearing from a guest speaker named Anne Jamieson. Anne s experience as a mom, teacher and diocesan employee, along with her sense of humour and down to earth approach to faith, will certainly make her contribution to our day both enjoyable and inspiring.
Page 3 Virtue of the Month Our virtue for the month of April is peace. Staff acknowledge students who show a willingness to creating the right relationship with God, ourselves, and the world. Grade 3 and 6 EQAO Soon all grade 3 and 6 students across the province will be participating in provincial testing in reading, writing and mathematics. This assessment provides one way that we reflect on the learning our students have accomplished through the primary and junior divisions. Please see our school calendar for our specific testing dates. Here are some suggestions to support your child s learning at home in preparation for the EQAO math assessment. Solve problems with your child. Talk about the advantages and disadvantages of the different ways problems can be solved. Have your child explain why he or she has chosen to solve a problem in a particular way. Showing mathematical thinking is a key component of success on EQAO. Play games and do puzzles that involve number and geometric patterns, relationships, and reasoning skills. A student who is flexible in using their math skills is better prepared to face a broad range of test questions. Talk about how your child can use what he or she is learning in mathematics. Let your child know that you think mathematics is important. Initiative and perseverance in mathematics are qualities that help students effectively demonstrate their learning on EQAO. For more information on EQAO, visit the website www.eqao.com Grade 3 and Grade 6 EQAO Testing will take place May 22-June 4, 2018. Refrain from booking any appointments. We ask you to please mark your calendars with these dates and keep them open so that the children in these grades can participate fully in their EQAO Testing. UCC Lancer Corner During the second week of April at UCC, students will perform in the play Annie. Senior and Junior Girls Rugby teams start off their season playing in their first tournament on April 12th in Oshawa. Badminton season has begun and we are just wrapping up the Senior Boys Soccer team tryouts. Our Muskoka leaders are excited about going to Muskoka Woods May 8-11 to meet our future Grade 7 Lancers!! Also, we will be receiving midterm marks this month. On March Break, the grade 10-13 students participated in the Europe trip to Switzerland and Italy. It was a trip of a lifetime.
