The Highly Capable Student
Highly Capable r Gifted Student Definitin Students Wh Are Highly Capable Students wh have a prepnderance f evidence frm multiple criteria that shw they are amng the mst highly capable. There is evidence f clear need fr highly capable services when cmpared with thers f their age, experiences, r envirnments. Perfrm r shw ptential fr perfrming at significantly advanced academic levels when cmpared with thers f their age, experiences, r envirnments. Outstanding abilities are seen within students general intellectual aptitudes, specific academic abilities, and/r creative prductivities within a specific dmain. Edmnds Schl District Bard Plicy 7330-R states that effrts will be made t identify highly capable students frm under-represented ppulatins.

The Highly Capable Prgram Cntinuum
Highly Capable Prgram Attributes Different pace, cmplexity, and instructin with emphasis n higher level thinking and prblem slving skills. Curriculum is accelerated and taken deeper. Nt a private schl/nt a self-paced prgram. Class size numbers are the same as regular educatin. All types f students are in gifted classes, including thse with special learning needs.
Challenge Prgram at Terrace Park Grades 1-6 Terrace Park becmes new hme schl. Students in class with ther gifted peers wh understand them. Transprtatin prvided frm neighbrhd schl t Terrace Park and back t neighbrhd schl. Nte: Students will nt be able t ride the schl bus between their hme and their neighbrhd schl and arrive in time t catch the bus t Terrace Park Challenge. Highly Capable MS Prgram Grades 7-8 Brier Terrace Middle becmes new hme schl. Students are with gifted peers in: Science English/Scial Studies blck Students are placed in apprpriate level math classes. Students have access t varius elective classes. The Multi-Disciplinary Selectin Cmmittee (MSC) Includes a classrm teacher, a gifted prgram teacher, a psychlgist and r cunselr, and a gifted administratr frm the district. Cnsiders all infrmatin, including the applicatin and ther requested infrmatin in determining mst highly capable students. Emphasis is n prepnderance f evidence frm CgAT and ther available data that the student is amng the mst highly capable and needs highly capable services.

Frequently Asked Questins Shuld My Student be Tested fr the Highly Capable Prgrams? If yu aren t sure, ask yur student s current teacher fr their pinin. Have any f yur child s previus teachers talked t yu abut Challenge/Gifted testing? Testing requires 3 hurs f fcused cncentratin with minimal breaks fr students. Please cnsider yur student s strengths and maturity level especially fr K-1 st graders. If yur student is happy, ding well, and thriving in schl, they may just be in the right place t be successful.
Frequently Asked Questins My Student Desn t Qualify? What Next? Student can take the CgAT test again anther year, up t fur times in grades K-7. If either f the fllwing cnditins apply, an Appeal may be submitted: An extrardinary circumstance ccurred during testing that may have negatively affected the validity f the test results (i.e., traumatic event r an illness preventing cmpletin f the test) Nte: The Highly Capable ffice must be ntified immediately n the day f testing f the extrardinary circumstance). A misapplicatin r miscalculatin f the assessment data due t an incrrect birthdate r grade level used in calculating the student s scre. We will nt accept utside testing r evaluatins fr placement r appeals.

Frequently Asked Questins What if my student qualifies and declines placement? If a student qualifies and declines placement in Challenge r the Gifted Middle Schl prgram, effrts will be made t meet the needs f yur child at the lcal schl, but gifted prgrams cannt be replicated. If yu ask fr placement anther year, yu will need t submit a new referral and yur child will need t test again during the winter testing cycle in the year prir t requested placement.
