University System f Gergia Fundamental Features f Crequisite Learning Supprt Nte: This is nt an admissins dcument. All guidelines and statements belw are intended fr students wh have already been admitted t USG institutins, nt as cnditins fr admissin. General Requirements fr Learning Supprt Prgrams Institutins that admit students with high schl grade pint averages (HSGPA) r standardized test scres indicating that they will require additinal supprt t succeed in cllegiate English r mathematics curses must ffer Learning Supprt curses in these areas. The default placement fr all students will be in an entry-level cllegiate curse with crequisite supprt UNLESS students meet exemptin criteria (fr supprt) as utlined belw in the sectins n English and mathematics. Students wh d nt meet any exemptin criteria may waive placement testing if they are willing t accept placement in crequisite Learning Supprt at the highest level f credit intensity ffered at the institutin. All students must be made aware that they have the OPTION t take placement tests, which may place them directly int cllegiate curses r in less credit-intensive levels f crequisite Learning Supprt. Students interested in taking placement tests shuld nt be discuraged frm ding s. Exceptin: students wishing t enrll in MATH 1111 Cllege Algebra, (with r withut crequisite Learning Supprt), must take the mathematics placement test unless they have met the criteria fr direct placement int MATH 1111 r MATH 1111 with crequisite Learning Supprt (see belw). Institutins that admit students requiring Learning Supprt in English r mathematics must designate a Learning Supprt Crdinatr whse duties must include (but are nt limited t): Ensuring that apprpriate Learning Supprt curses are prvided fr all admitted students requiring Learning Supprt. Crdinating with institutinal admissins, the testing center, and academic departments as needed regarding placement, and ensuring that all students are apprpriately placed. Ensuring that Learning Supprt placement and prgress are accurately flagged and tracked in Banner. Ensuring that the fundamental features f crequisite remediatin are fully implemented at the institutin. Ensuring that crequisite Learning Supprt curses are carefully and apprpriately crdinated with the cllege level curses they are intended t supprt. Prviding r crdinating training f institutinal faculty, staff, and administratrs as needed t ensure apprpriate implementatin f the crequisite Learning Supprt mdel. Learning Supprt curses are t be ffered exclusively in crequisite frmat starting n later than fall 2018. The crequisite frmat means that students requiring Learning Supprt will enrll in bth a cllegiate curse (ENGL 1101, MATH 1001, MATH 1101, r MATH 1111) and a crequisite Learning Supprt curse that is designed t supprt mastery f the skills and cncepts needed t pass 1

the cllegiate curse in a just-in-time manner. Each crequisite curse will be a required curse that is aligned with and ffered alngside the apprpriate cllege-level curse and shuld be designed specifically t help students master the skills and knwledge required fr success in the linked cllege-level curse. The cllege-level and crequisite sectins must be carefully crdinated. In particular, the cllegelevel and crequisite sectins must cver the same tpics in the same rder at the same time. In practical terms, this may mean that institutins will have t specify the rder and timing f tpic cverage fr ALL crequisite sectins and ALL cllege-level sectins that include LS students. Institutins must use the standard prefixes, numbers, and curse descriptins as listed belw fr the crequisite Learning Supprt curses. Different sectins f Learning Supprt curses may be tailred fr particular grups and ffered fr different amunts f credit (up t 3 hurs f institutinal credit), and tuitin may be charged accrdingly. Sectins at different levels f supprt shuld be distinct (e.g., students requiring a threecredit crequisite curse shuld nt be enrlled in the same Learning Supprt sectin as students requiring a ne-credit crequisite curse). At institutins ffering crequisite Learning Supprt curses at multiple levels f credit intensity, curse number suffixes A, B, and C will be used t designate curses with different credit hurs. Example: Crequisite Supprt fr ENGL 1101 English Cmpsitin I ENGL 0999A 3 credit hurs ENGL 0999B 2 credit hurs ENGL 0999C 1 credit hur Crequisite Supprt fr MATH 1001 Quantitative Reasning MATH 0997A 3 credit hurs MATH 0997B 2 credit hurs MATH 0997C 1 credit hur Crequisite Supprt fr MATH 1101 Intrductin t Mathematical Mdeling MATH 0998A 3 credit hurs MATH 0998B 2 credit hurs MATH 0998C 1 credit hur Crequisite Supprt fr MATH 1111 Cllege Algebra MATH 0999A 3 credit hurs MATH 0999B 2 credit hurs MATH 0999C 1 credit hur Institutins ffering nly ne level f Learning Supprt d nt need t use the identifier suffixes described abve. Students will exit Learning Supprt (LS) requirements in English and/r mathematics by passing the cllegiate-level curse in the Learning Supprt area with a grade that meet the minimum grade requirement fr the cllegiate curse at that institutin (typically a C r higher). Paired cllege-level curse sectins may have nly LS students r a mix f LS and nn-ls students. When a cllege-level curse sectin cntains nly LS students, care shuld be taken t ensure that the sectin adheres t the same academic standards as sectins cntaining a mix f LS and nn-ls students r sectins cntaining nn-ls students nly. Institutins must establish cnsistent standards fr sectins f ENGL 1101, MATH 1001, MATH 1101, and MATH 1111.The cllege-level curse sectins that LS students enrll in must be identical t thse taken by students wh d nt have LS requirements. N elements f the crequisite 2

experience will cntribute t the grade earned in the cllege-level curse. Althugh exit frm LS requirements is determined by the grade in the cllegiate curse, institutins shuld make every effrt t ensure that students attend the crequisite curse and take the wrk f the crequisite curse seriusly. Institutins must use A, B, C, F grading in the crequisite curses. Students wishing t drp r withdraw frm either the crequisite r linked cllege-level curses will be required t withdraw frm BOTH curses. Students requiring Learning Supprt in bth English and mathematics may defer enrllment in crequisite Learning Supprt and the accmpanying cllegiate curses ne r the ther area, but must be cntinuusly enrlled in ne r bth until the cllege-level curses have been passed. In cases where students cannt take curses in bth Learning Supprt areas simultaneusly, enrllment in ENGL 1101 with crequisite supprt shuld take pririty. All Area A requirements must be cmpleted within the first 30 credit hurs, including cllege-level and crequisite requirements in bth English and mathematics. 3

English Placement All entering students will be enrlled in ENGL 1101 English Cmpsitin I and the crequisite LS curse, ENGL 0999 Supprt fr English Cmpsitin unless they meet ne f the exemptin criteria listed belw r are enrlled in a prgram fr which ENGL 1101 is nt required. If students enrll in prgrams that d nt require ENGL 1101, but they chse t take this curse, standard assessment and placement rules will apply. The exemptin criteria belw apply t the requirement t enrll in the crequisite LS curse, nt t the ENGL 1101 curse requirement. Institutins may set higher exemptin criteria. Students meeting any f the criteria n the list belw may enrll in ENGL 1101 withut the crequisite Learning Supprt curse, ENGL 0999: Student already has credit fr an Area A English curse (must meet the minimum grade requirement fr the curse fr the institutin which may be a C r higher). Student has an English Placement Index f 4230 r higher.* Student has a final high schl GPA (HSGPA this is the same HSGPA that is used in calculatin f the Freshman Index) f 3.1 r higher and has cmpleted the Required High Schl Curriculum (RHSC) in English. Student has an ACT English scre f 17 r higher. Student has an SAT Verbal/Critical Reading scre f 430 r higher n the ld SAT. Student has an SAT Reading test scre f 24 r higher n the new SAT. Student has an Accuplacer Reading Cmprehensin scre f 61 r higher AND an Accuplacer WritePlacer scre f 4 r higher. Student has an Accuplacer Next-Generatin Reading scre f XX** r higher AND an Accuplacer WritePlacer scre f 4 r higher. * The English Placement Index may be used thrugh January 2019 r until the institutin adpts the Next-Generatin Accuplacer Reading test fr placement, whichever cmes first. Next-Generatin Accuplacer Reading test scres may nt be used t calculate the English Placement Index. ** A scre fr Next-Generatin Reading will be prvided when the Cllege Bard prvides cncrdance infrmatin fr Accuplacer Next-Generatin Reading and Accuplacer Reading Cmprehensin (expected in spring 2018). English Learning Supprt Curse Prefix, Number, and Descriptin ENGL 0999 Supprt fr English Cmpsitin (1-3 institutinal credit hurs) Prerequisites: Nne Crequisite: ENGL 1101 English Cmpsitin I Descriptin: This Learning Supprt curse prvides crequisite supprt in reading and writing fr students enrlled in ENGL 1101 English Cmpsitin I. Tpics will parallel thse being studied in ENGL 1101 and the curse will prvide supprt fr the essential reading and writing skills needed t be successful in ENGL 1101. Taken with ENGL 1101, this is a cmpsitin curse fcusing n skills required fr effective writing in a variety f cntexts, with emphasis n expsitin, analysis, and argumentatin, and als including intrductry use f a variety f research skills. 4

Curse Design ENGL 0999, Supprt fr English Cmpsitin, will serve the dual purpse f supprting and illuminating the skills and cncepts f ENGL 1101 English Cmpsitin I while als prviding instructin fr students t strengthen reading and writing cmpetencies in which they have deficiencies. It is recmmended that the same instructr teach the ENGL 1101 and ENGL 0999 sectins. When this is nt pssible, the cllege-level and crequisite sectins must still be carefully crdinated. In particular, the cllege-level and crequisite sectins must cver the same tpics in the same rder at the same time. In practical terms, this may mean that institutins will have t specify the rder and timing f tpic cverage fr ALL ENGL 0999 sectins and ALL ENGL 1101 sectins that include LS students. 5

Mathematics Aligned Mathematics Curses Fr students wh are nt enrlled in a STEM r business prgram, r a field requiring an algebraintensive curse, the linked mathematics curses will be either: MATH 0997 Supprt fr Quantitative Reasning with MATH 1001 Quantitative Reasning OR MATH 0998 Supprt fr Mathematical Mdeling with MATH 1101 Intrductin t Mathematical Mdeling. Any student may enrll in these curses. Fr students enrlled in prgrams with a calculus r algebra-intensive mathematics requirement, the linked mathematics curses will be: MATH 0999 Supprt fr Cllege Algebra with MATH 1111 Cllege Algebra. Special requirements fr MATH 1111: Students must meet placement criteria (utlined belw) fr direct placement int MATH 1111 r placement int MATH 1111 with crequisite supprt. Placement All entering students will be enrlled in ne f three standard Area A cllege-level credit bearing mathematics curses (MATH 1001 Quantitative Reasning, MATH 1101 Intrductin t Mathematical Mdeling, r MATH 1111 Cllege Algebra) and a crequisite Learning Supprt (LS) curse unless they meet ne f the exemptin criteria listed belw r are enrlled in a prgram fr which a mathematics curse is nt required. Nte that MATH 1111 has higher placement and exemptin criteria than MATH 1001 and MATH 1101. If students enrll in prgrams that d nt require a mathematics curse, but they chse t take a mathematics curse, standard assessment and placement rules will apply. The exemptin criteria belw apply t the requirement t enrll in a crequisite LS curse, nt t the cllege-level mathematics curse requirement. Institutins may set higher exemptin criteria.
