McNair Graduate Scholarship Award Application Form and Directions Purpose The McNair Graduate Scholarship Award is part of the College of Graduate Studies Diversity and Outreach Initiative which seeks to ensure that adequate funding opportunities exist for all students, and specifically those who have overcome significant educational and personal challenges to pursue higher education and possess the skills, leadership and ability to make a significant impact in their chosen field. The scholarship seeks to ensure that students traditionally under-represented nationally in graduate education have access to assistance to encourage their participation. The College of Graduate Studies (COGS) offers awards for students applying to a Masters or Doctoral program at the University of Toledo, with successful completion of an undergraduate Ronald E. McNair Baccalaureate Achievement program. Eligibility Applicants must meet the following requirements to be eligible for consideration for the McNair Scholarship: Be a United States Citizen. Verification of completion of a Ronald E. McNair Baccalaureate Achievement Program. Be an applicant to a graduate program (JD, PharmD, and MD, Executive MBA, MSBS-Medical Sciences, and graduate certificate programs are not eligible). Meet the specific admissions criteria for the academic program. Meet the following criteria: Be a newly admitted first-time graduate student for Spring 2017, Summer 2017 or Fall 2017 Semester. Have a complete Application for Graduate Admissions to a Masters or Ph.D. program at the University of Toledo on file before the stated deadline. Be a full-time graduate student (9 credit hours per semester, or more with academic program and College of Graduate Studies approval). Complete and return the McNair Graduate Scholarship Award Application and supporting materials on or before February 10, 2017. Late submissions are not guaranteed consideration. Be willing to fulfill a 20-hour a week assistantship if selected. Awards The McNair Graduate Scholarship Award provides full-time tuition (9 credit hours per semester, or more with academic program and College of Graduate Studies approval) for up to 4 semesters of a master s degree or up to 8 semesters of a doctoral degree, and a stipend according to the departmental rate. Tuition refers to instructional fees only (in-state and out-of-state tuition). Further, these tuition funds cannot be applied to undergraduate, audited or repeated courses. McNair Scholarship awards are limited and dependent on available funds. UT McNair Graduate Scholarship Awards are not an automatic extension of an Undergraduate McNair Scholarship Program. It is not possible to promise any potential applicant that a McNair Scholarship is guaranteed to them for a program of their choice in any given academic year. Awards are competitive with preference to doctoral programs and first year applicants. Acceptance by the program is required prior to award. McNair Graduate Scholarship Award Application Process and Deadline: Graduate Admissions Application to a Master s or Doctoral program must be completed and submitted to the College of Graduate Studies prior to the McNair Graduate Scholarship deadline of February 10, 2017. McNair Graduate Scholarship Award Application is due to COGS on or before February 10, 2017. Academic/Personal Statement, not to exceed 750 words, that summarizes your accomplishments as an undergraduate, addresses your personal and professional goals, states how you would contribute to your chosen field, and describes why you feel you are deserving of this McNair Graduate Scholarship Award opportunity. Additional materials that will be evaluated by the College of Graduate Studies Diversity Committee. The materials should be submitted as part of the regular Graduate Admissions Application to your program. In other words, it is not necessary to submit the following items as part of your McNair Application. We will obtain them from your electronic Graduate Admissions Application**. All official transcripts from Undergraduate academic institutions you have or are currently attending.** Resume* Two Academic/Professional Letters of Recommendation with signatures which explain the applicant s ability to study at the graduate level. There must be a full letter, not just the generic list with evaluation categories on the electronic application template.* *If the admissions criteria for your specific program do not include these items please submit them as part of the McNair Graduate Scholarship Award application described above. **If you are an applicant to the Speech Language Pathology, Doctorate in Physical Therapy or Physician Assistant Programs, please submit transcripts, resume and two letters of recommendation as part of your McNair application packet because the committee can not access the documents in your Central Application Systems prior to your admission. Important Notes It is The University of Toledo policy that full-time students receiving Graduate Assistantships such as this one cannot work outside of their assistantship duties unless a request to work outside the assistantship is filed and approved.
