STAT GENERAL INFORMATION PLEASE DETACH THIS PAGE AND KEEP IT TO REFER TO LATER What is STAT? STAT is a special testing programme offered by the Tertiary Institutions Service Centre (TISC) to mature age cidates to assist their application for university admission. This is a national test developed by ACER designed to assess aptitude for learning in a tertiary environment. It is your responsibility to check whether STAT can be used for admission to the course that you are considering, what sections of the STAT you need to sit. TISC cannot give this advice. As closing dates late application fees apply for university, you should not necessarily wait for your STAT results before applying for university. This form is NOT an application for admission to university. STAT consists of two sections: STAT Multiple Choice This is a 2-hour test, consisting of 70 multiple-choice questions. Half the questions assess verbal skills (social science humanities) the other half assess quantitative skills (mathematics science). In addition to an overall score, scores are calculated separately for the verbal quantitative components. Written English This is a 1-hour test to measure English competency. You will be asked to write two short essays on two different topics: Part A is a public affairs issue that invites argument, while Part B asks you to write from a more personal point of view. Each section gives a choice of four topics. Confirmation of your booking: Once you have booked for the test, you will receive a STAT Cidate Information Booklet, which contains confirmation details of your STAT sitting, information on STAT a set of practice questions. Additional practice questions are available in the STAT Practice Tests. These are available for purchase from https://stat.acer.edu.au/preparation/practice-material Who can do it? 1. For Semester Two 2018 entry: Cidates who are at least 20 years of age before 1 August 2018. For Semester One 2019 entry: Cidates who will be 20 years of age before 1 March 2019. In specific cases, universities may invite under-age cidates to sit STAT. 2. You can only sit STAT once between May 2018 April 2019. 3. If you are an overseas student who is not an Australian citizen or permanent resident of Australia, you should only sit STAT on the advice of the tertiary institution you wish to attend. 4. You may sit the test in WA for entry to universities or TAFEs in other states. 5. If you are an Australian citizen or permanent resident you want to sit the test overseas, you should contact the Australian Council for Educational Research at www.stat.acer.edu.au or on (03) 9277 5357. Cidates with Special Needs Special test arrangements can be made for cidates with disabilities. Any request for special test arrangements must be made in writing to TISC, at the time the booking form is lodged. Evidence must be provided to support the request. The dates of these testing sessions will be published on the TISC website once they have been confirmed by the universities. Can I change my test date? You may request a change of session to the next available testing date. A fee of $65 is payable must be presented to TISC with a written request for a change of session no later than 1 working day before the allocated session date. STAT fees may be refunded if a written application is submitted to TISC no later than 1 working day before the allocated testing session (ie 4.30pm Thursday for a Saturday test). A cancellation fee of $65 is charged. There is no refund of fees if you are unsuccessful in gaining a place at a university. What if I was sick or had to work? If you missed your allocated testing session for medical or employment reasons you may rebook for the next session or request a refund. You will also need to include a change of session fee of $65 if you wish to rebook for the test. If you prefer to cancel your test, do not send any money: you will receive a refund minus a cancellation fee of $65. Each case will be considered on its merits. TISC will acknowledge your request within 3 working days.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Sitting STAT is only one of the ways to qualify for admission to a range of university courses. If you are not sure if you should sit STAT to gain entry to a specific course you should contact the university concerned. More information on university mature age entry requirements is available on TISC s website at www.tisc.edu.au. What STAT marks do I need what courses might I get into? Both STAT Multiple Choice (MC) STAT Written English (WE) are marked on a scale of 100 to 200. There are three scores for STAT Multiple Choice: one for the verbal component, one for the quantitative component an overall mark. All are calculated independently. Most courses require you to sit both STAT MC WE in the same STAT year (May-April). Curtin University To be eligible for entry to the University you will need: STAT MC a minimum score of 135 STAT WE a minimum score of 140 STAT entry into undergraduate courses: The scores for STAT WE at least one component of STAT MC will need to equate to a notional Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) equal to or greater than the cut-off rank for the course/s for which you are applying. STAT is not acceptable for all courses; some courses require specific components of STAT MC (ie Verbal or Quantitative, or both). STAT WE to demonstrate English competency: All applicants for admission to Curtin are required to meet Curtin s English requirements. If your completed qualification does not meet these requirements, you can undertake the STAT WE. Attainment of 140 in the STAT WE will satisfy Curtin s minimum English competency requirement, however it is important to note that some courses may require a higher level of attainment. For more information, please contact the Admissions Office on 1300 222 888, or visit our website at www.curtin.edu.au. Edith Cowan University To be eligible for consideration for undergraduate courses you will need: STAT MC a mark of at least 135 for either component STAT WE a mark of at least 140 The score for STAT Written English at least one component of STAT Multiple Choice must equate to a notional Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) equal to or greater than the cut-off rank for the course/s being applied for. Attainment of 140 in the STAT Written English will satisfy ECU s English competency requirement. For further information telephone Edith Cowan University on 13 43 28 or visit our website at www.ecugetready.com.au. Murdoch University To meet the academic minimum for admission to Murdoch University you will need: STAT MC a mark of at least 135 for either component* STAT WE a mark of at least 140* * Higher STAT scores are required to meet the academic minimum for entry into Engineering Commerce courses. STAT does not qualify you for entry to Law or Veterinary Science. Achieving the academic minimum does not guarantee admission to a particular course. Due to competition for places the cut off may be higher than the academic minimum. Attainment of 140 in the STAT WE will satisfy Murdoch s English competency requirement. For further information, telephone the Student Centre on 1300 MURDOCH (1300 687 3624) or visit our website at www.murdoch.edu.au. The University of Western Australia STAT may be used in two ways: 1. STAT-alone entry to undergraduate courses in: Arts* Biomedical Science + Commerce + Science + * Audition also required for entry to Music Studies / Music Specialist Studies. + These courses also require a pass in Mathematical Methods ATAR (or equivalent). If you do not have this, you will need to undertake a mathematics foundation unit as part of your degree enrolment. Minimum requirements: STAT MC a mark of at least 140 in Verbal component STAT WE a mark of at least 160 2. STAT to demonstrate English language competence All applicants for admission to UWA are required to provide evidence of satisfactory performance in an approved test of English, in addition to their other qualifications for entry. Most school leaver applicants will be required to achieve a satisfactory score in English ATAR, Literature ATAR, EALD ATAR, or their UWA-approved interstate equivalents. For others STAT may, in some cases, be acceptable in lieu of these subjects. Contact UWA Admissions to find out if STAT is appropriate in your case. Minimum requirements: STAT MC a mark of at least 140 in Verbal component STAT WE a mark of at least 140 For further information telephone Admissions on (08) 6488 2477 or visit the website at www.studyat.uwa.edu.au. A number of institutions offer preparation courses throughout the year or just at peak times of dem for STAT. The following list does not claim to cover all such courses, but are the ones of which TISC is currently aware.
