Academic Enrichment Programs

Pre-7th and Pre-8th Grade Academic Enrichment Programs HSPT Test Preparation Program June 24, 2013 to July 26, 2013, Monday through Friday 8:30 am to 1:00 pm $1,150 To meet the academic needs of boys and girls entering the seventh and eighth grades, La Salle offers a program centering on reading, writing and math. These core classes are supplemented by workshops in science, computer science (web design), and art which meet on alternate days throughout the program. The Pre-7th and Pre-8th Grade Program also offers preparation for high school entrance examinations (the HSPT test given by most area high schools). Students prepare for high school entrance tests through a full-scale practice test and through weekly practice units. Pre-7th Math Courses Math 7-1 This course is designed for the student who has taken some pre-algebra in the current school year and will continue with pre-algebra in the fall. The student may also begin Algebra I during the coming school year. This course is appropriate for honors level students. Topics include: Integers, rder of perations, Evaluating Expressions, Solving Basic Equations, Solving Inequalities, Coordinates and Graphing, Exponents, Monomials, and Polynomials. Math 7-2 This course is for those students with limited experience with pre-algebra concepts or who will begin pre-algebra in the fall. Topics include: Fractions, Decimals, Ratios and Proportions, Percents, Integers, rder of perations, Evaluating Expressions, and Solving Equations. Pre-8th Math Courses Algebra II This advanced course is designed for those students that have already completed a full year of Algebra I. Math 8-1 This course is designed for the student who will begin a full year of Algebra I in the fall or who has begun Algebra I this current school year. This course is appropriate for honors level students. Topics include: rder of perations, Solving Equations, Exponents, Monomials, Polynomials, FIL method, Polynomial Equations and Factoring Polynomials. Math 8-2 This course is designed for the student who has taken some pre-algebra during the current school year. Topics include: Integers, rder of perations, Evaluating Expressions, Solving Basic Equations, Solving Inequalities, Coordinates and Graphing, Exponents, and Monomials. Math 8-3 This course is for those students who have limited experience with pre-algebra or who will begin pre-algebra in the fall. Pre-9th Grade Academic Enrichment Program June 24, 2013 to July 25, 2013 Monday through Thursday 8:30 to 9:30 am Algebra I+ 9:40 to 10:40 am English 10:50 to 11:50 am Algebra II+ To meet the academic needs of boys and girls entering 9th grade, La Salle offers a program to help students make the transition to a high school setting. Students can take courses in Math and English which will help to prepare them for a high school experience and the expectations that will be placed upon them. The program is open to all area students male and female that will be attending 9th grade in September. Writing Enrichment Program June 24, 2013 to July 24, 2013 Mondays and Wednesdays 9:00 am to 12:00 pm $500.00 This course is open to any high school student male or female looking to improve his or her writing skills. Classes will be in groups of five to seven and will work specifically on writing persuasively in all subject areas. Some topics covered will be: How do I get started? Where do I find the best information? How do I make my writing stand out? PSAT/SAT Preparation Courses June 25, 2013 to July 25, 2013 Tuesdays and Thursdays 8:30 am to 1:00 pm pen to Any High School Student Male or Female PSAT/SAT Math Course This twenty hour course reviews the basic principles of Arithmetic, Algebra, Probability, Statistics, Data Analysis, Geometry and Trigonometry. Strategies are introduced for handling the new SAT problems involving these principles. Students will use ten SAT tests to learn principles and strategies so that they will become comfortable with the formatting and type of questions on the actual test. PSAT/SAT Verbal Courses These twenty-five hour courses begin with a series of diagnostic tests focusing on sentence completions, analogies, reading comprehension, and written English. The new SAT requirements are stressed along with a general review of test taking strategies. There are practice tests given during the five weeks of the course and a Review Class prior to the PSAT and ctober SAT. It is strongly advised that a student enroll in both courses, however the option exists to take just one. PSAT/SAT Critical Reading This course will focus on reading comprehension, sentence completion and paragraph length critical reading. PSAT/SAT Writing This course will be devoted to helping the student organize and express his or her ideas more clearly. It will also reinforce correct grammar, usage and word choice.

It will work to develop a student s abilities in reading comprehension, writing, grammar and usage skills and vocabulary.
