The Department of Environmental and Life Sciences conducts research and education in fields closely related to both environmental and life sciences including biology, chemistry, electrical and mechanical engineering, environmental engineering, nano/micro science, molecular biology, society/safety systems science, molecular biology and fine organic synthesis. The department is organized into two courses: the Sustainable Development Course seeks to deepen comprehensive understanding of the ecosystem and environment, and the Life and Material Sciences Course seeks to deepen fundamental understanding of life and matter. The former course aims to restore, improve and maintain the eco-cycle system by providing engineering support for sustainable development of human activities. The latter course uses the rich knowledge base of life science and chemistry to conduct research and education for the understanding the biological mechanisms and their application as well as the synthesis of materials and the characterization of their physical properties. Now the Sustainable Development Course undergoes the strengthening of the advanced study in the field of environment, which can realize the environmental load-reduction and the services. Therefore, we are seeking a person who can teach and research water-treatment and keep challenging to secure substantial research funds. We recruit a researcher who studies in water treatment and challenges to expand his/her field to waste-water treatment, solid waste treatment, valunable resource recovery technology and process management technology by promoting the integration with other fields or organizations. The admitted tenure-track lecturer will gain the prioritized support by the university especially in the research environment such as a fund and a space. In the term of the contract, there will be an interim assessment after three years and a final assessment during the fifth year. Successful completion of the final evaluation will result in another appointment as a tenured faculty member (associate professor). - 1 -

Research field: Engineering Specific Area: Fields related to both wastewater treatment and biotechnology with biodegradable waste such as plastics and plants, and other areas related to aquatic environmental research and development focusing on next-generation water treatment Job Type: Full-time Lecturer (Associate Professor level) Employment Class: Full-time (Non-tenured) Term of Employment: Five years from the date of appointment. Successful lecturer has an opportunity to be employed as a tenured faculty member as an associate professor, depending on their research achievements and performance during the period of appointment. Work Area: Tokai district Aichi Address: 1-1 Hibarigaoka, Tempaku-cho, Toyohashi, Aichi, 441-8580, Japan Number of Position: 1 Qualifications: (1) Applicants must have a doctoral degree received within the past 10 years and be under 40 years old on the date of appointment. This is due to the fact that this program is supported by MEXT human resource development fee grant, "Program to Disseminate Tenure Tracking System". (2) Applicants must have extensive experience in the aforementioned research areas and be capable of conducting world-class research. (3) Applicants must have an excellent record of research achievements related to the aforementioned research areas (publications, notable international conference presentations and awards). (4) Applicants must be able to conduct research in English in case his/her native language is not Japanese. It will be, however, required to master Japanese to fulfill teaching obligations and related management as a tenured faculty member by the final appointment. Treatment: 1. Remuneration The successful candidate will receive a salary of approximately 352,000 yen per month during the employment (in the case of applicants who received their doctorate seven years ago) and diligence and end-of-term allowance, family allowance, commuting allowance, housing allowance will also be paid. The final total salary will be determined in accordance with the working regulations and the relevant rules and regulations of the University, depending on the individual - 2 -

work-experience. Furthermore, it will also be enrolled in mutual benefit association as the social insurance system (mutual pension, employees health insurance and employees pension insurance), employment insurance, and occupational injury insurance scheme. 2. Working conditions (1) The workplace will be on the campus of Toyohashi University of Technology. (2) Applicants currently residing abroad will receive support in securing accommodation. (3) The rules and regulations of Toyohashi University of Technology are applied from the date of appointment. 3. Research environment (1) Research funding of 6 million yen will be provided in the first year, 3 million yen in the second year. The amount is subject to change due to the budget of MEXT. The University will provide research funds from the 3rd year. (2) Two faculty members will serve as research advisers for the admitted candidate. In addition, graduate students will be appointed as research assistants. Duties: The admitted candidate will be mainly engaged in research activities including the publication of international-level research papers and presentations at international conferences, based on the research plan submitted at the time of appointment. To foster the ability of the applicant to teach and lead students in preparation for a tenured position, the admitted candidate participates in educational activities such as providing instruction in the expertised field and guiding graduate students. It is, however, also noted that more than 70% of efforts can be focused on research during the period of the employment. Promotion to Tenure Position The assessment for the promotion to tenure position (associate professor) will be conducted in the fifth year. The comprehensive assessment will be made on the basis of self-assessment, the contents of written documents, interviews, open symposiums and etc. by the Tenure Screening Committee, which includes internationally active specialists in the university and overseas. An interim assessment will be made in the third year. a successful lecturer with particularly excellent research achievements by that time will be appointed as a tenured faculty member (associate professor). For a faculty member who fails to acquire the tenured position, the University will support his/her attempts to find alternative employment. - 3 -

* Tenured position at Toyohashi University of Technology is not lifelong position and has a compulsory retirement age, currently 65 years old. Items (3),(4), and (5) can be prepared in the format of the applicant s choosing. *2 Original copies of items (1) to (5) and the electronic medium of equivalent should be sent to us. *3 Dossier can be filled in English for non-native speakers of Japanese. 2.
