Queen Elizabeth Grammar School Penrith

Step up to a quality education Welcome to Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, a mixed selective academy that aims to engage, excite and motivate students aged 11-18 so that they can achieve their full potential. Founded in 1564, we relocated to our present site on the outskirts of Penrith in 1915, and pride ourselves on being the only grammar school in Cumbria and the North East. The move to secondary school is a natural step in a student s educational journey and, as such, we aim to make the transition as smooth as possible. Drawn from more than 50 partner primary schools, students are encouraged to be academically ambitious, resilient, creative, and to use their initiative. The school has enabled both my children to flourish by providing a nurturing environment and motivating teachers who inspire a passion for learning. Parent I enjoy coming here. Everyone s really friendly. Year 7 student At Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, we aim to prepare our students to succeed in tomorrow s world, by providing a secure, challenging learning environment, a rigorous academic curriculum, high expectations, and best practice in teaching, learning and technology. This is enhanced by wide-ranging extracurricular opportunities and outstanding pastoral care. Our relatively small size and friendly, relaxed atmosphere enables our highly experienced and committed staff to provide a calm, caring, nurturing and inclusive setting, where every student is known, valued, supported and treated as an individual.

A reputation for academic excellence My son is happy and I am pleased with the progress he is making. The school is everything I hoped it would be. Year 8 parent We are a diverse, happy and successful school, where students thrive in an atmosphere of equality and opportunity for all. Within a broad and balanced curriculum we aim to instil in all our students a love of learning by giving them the tools to become effective, independent learners. We do this by developing their knowledge, understanding and abilities, giving them the intellectual skills to become effective learners. We want all of our students to have high hopes for the future, and to strive for the highest levels of achievement through a committed and conscientious work ethic, self-discipline and mutual respect. As a result, students make outstanding progress academically. Academic rigour sits alongside practical work, discussion and individual study, while innovative, fun and memorable ways of learning engage and inspire students to achieve their best. Activities such as fundraising for charity not only help the wider community, they encourage teamwork by uniting students behind a common cause. As a result, students enjoy school and grow in maturity, confidence, and independence. At each stage of their educational journey, we give students timely and appropriate guidance. This enables them to make informed choices about the relevance of their studies to future career choices, Post-16 and Higher Education, training and employment opportunities, so that they can take the most appropriate path to realise their ambitions. I love school! My favourite subjects are maths and rugby. Year 11 student

Skills for life We are proud of our partnerships with parents, schools, universities and employers, whose opinions and practical support play an essential part in the life of our school. The views of our students are also important. Older students frequently take responsibility for supporting younger students, while members of the Student Council take part in all staff appointments. In addition to encouraging academic achievement, we aim to promote and develop our students interests and talents, as well as their moral and spiritual growth, through a wide range of extracurricular opportunities. These include the Duke of Edinburgh s Award, an extensive variety of sporting fixtures, residential experiences, and numerous clubs and societies. Theatre visits, drama workshops and musical performances are complemented by science, engineering, mathematics, business and enterprise activities, all of which help to enhance our students social development and cultural awareness. We also offer an extensive variety of trips to support curriculum learning, ranging from history, languages and geology, to destinations including France, Germany, Iceland, Venice and London. QEGS has allowed our daughter to develop into a well-educated, responsible and caring young adult. Year 13 parent There is a strong sense of community and belonging. Year 9 student Produced by Words&Pictures. Tel: 01943 854800 A large number of students from QEGS progress to our thriving Sixth Form, which also attracts students from across the county. Housed on a separate site from the main school, and comprising more than 230 students, we are proud to offer the broadest possible choice of A-level subjects. Personalised learning, more individually focused teaching, and support in making university and career choices, help to make QEGS the local Sixth Form of choice. When the time arrives for our students to leave school and embark on the next stage of their journey to university, Further Education, an apprenticeship or employment they do so confident that they are well prepared to take their place as enterprising citizens in tomorrow s world.
