Planning and preparation 2 English language proficiency tests The English Language proficiency tests that are used universally when applying for study abroad programs are the TOEFL ibt or the IELTS (Academic Module) There are occasions when you will not be able to apply with TOEIC or Eiken Many students contact us saying they may not have completed the test before the application deadline It is important to take the examinations early Outline TOEFL ibt US and majority or the world`s universities use this to verify proficiency in English language From April 2014 this can no longer be used to apply for a UK visa IELTS (Academic Module) UK and majority or the world`s universities use this to verify proficiency in English language Score 0 120 (Increments of 1 point) 1.0-9.0 (Increments of 0.5 points) Test Frequency Cost Almost every week, more than 50 times a year US $225 (Cost varies depending on closing dates) Tests take place around 3 times a month in Tokyo JPY 25,380 11-11 -

Planning and preparation 3 Costs and Scholarships General cost involved in studying abroad: it is said to be roughly over JPY 2,000,000 3,000,000 for a year including tuition fees and living expenses, but Depends on the program as well as country or region You will still have to pay tuition fees and living expenses even if you do not go overseas Compare the costs of studying in Japan and studying abroad Make use of the scholarships available wisely (see p32 of guidebook) UTokyo is expanding and improving the system of scholarships (external funding, donations, etc.) Note that your grades may be taken into consideration during the screening process Program fees tend to be reduced if applied through UTokyo It is possible to make use of reductions, waivers, and scholarships available for UTokyo 12-12 -

Planning and preparation 4 Registration and acceptance of credits Details are given in p26 27 of the guidebook Various procedures relating to your student registration are necessary when you go abroad to study (request to study abroad, request for leave of absence, notification of overseas travel, etc.) Payment of tuition fees, acceptance of credits earned, changes to your timing of graduation are all impacted by the status of your registration as a student when you study abroad Review of the Rules and Regulations are taking place to make it easier to study abroad as well as worthwhile Example) Acceptance of credits earned overseas while on leave of absence As the situation varies depending on the Faculty/Graduate Schools, please discuss and confirm with the relevant office of your affiliated Faculty/Graduate School 13-13 -

Planning and preparation 4 Registration and acceptance of credits General procedure of having earned credits accepted at UTokyo (Details vary depending on Faculty/Graduate School) Before traveling: Study plan at host university confirm what subjects will have the earned credits accepted at UTokyo, the necessary requirements for acceptance, procedures, and other cautionary points relevant office of your affiliated Faculty/Graduate School (see p39 of guidebook) Occasionally, the courses you originally planned to take becomes unavailable at the host university. Please have second, third choice subjects when making your plans While abroad: Register for your courses following instructions of the host university Study hard in order to be able to obtain the credits Please make sure to obtain at least one copy of transcripts from the host university On your return: Apply for acceptance of credit transfer relevant office of your affiliated Faculty/Graduate School (Application must be received from the student for the transfer of earned credit to be accepted) Receipt of application forms (course transcripts, syllabus, university prospectus, etc.) decision of acceptance will be made by the education council of your affiliated Faculty/Graduate School. The results of the decision can be confirmed through your grade transcripts 14-14 -

Planning and preparation 5 Safety and risk management Please see the guidebook or website for details Response and attitude to safety and risk management is crucial Japan is one of the safest countries and has the best medical facilities in the world Assuming things are like Japan overseas will not work (even in developed countries) Purchasing comprehensive travel insurance and study abroad insurance is a must Medical fees are very expensive Preparation before travel - Health Management and Safety Management Health check-ups, dental checks, preparation of standard medical kits, obtaining information on country of destination, and carry an emergency contact list Read the Risk Management Guidebook For Overseas Travel 16-16 -
