Cleveland State University Department of Mathematics Course Outline for MTH 147 Course Title: Statistical Concepts with Applications The purpose of this course is for students to learn basic statistical concepts and methodology. Topics include ways of describing, organizing and exploring data, an introduction to probability to support the reasoning behind standard methods of inference, and use of the modern computer technology in basic model building, data analysis and decision making. This course will prepare students for further study in statistics and its applications. Course Credit: 3 s.h. Software: We will be using the statistical software program Minitab to perform statistical computations. You may download a copy of Minitab for yourself from Blackboard, but you are required to sign a contractual agreement that you will use it within copyright specifications. (This is standard practice for most software packages.) Course Prerequisite: MTH 115 or suitable placement score. Course Objectives: Define Statistics and identify its scope and limitations. Describe and apply the basic concepts in Statistics. Use the basic statistical terms and symbols to solve statistics problems and communicate statistical results and information. Use statistical software to calculate descriptive Statistics and to graphically display data. Use statistical software to generate contingency tables and regression lines and correctly interpret the results. Course Outline for MTH 147 1

Demonstrate a basic understanding of probabilistic models and how these relate to Statistics. Estimate population parameters from sample data and calculate confidence intervals. Understand principles of hypothesis testing and the correct interpretation of hypothesis test results. Interpret the results of a statistical study. Class Procedure: We will begin each day with the lesson and then allow time for questions and discussion. There will be a quiz at the end of each chapter (9 chapters). Assigned homework problems are due no later than the day of the quiz. We will meet in the computer lab once a week to do a Minitab Lab. If you do not complete the lab that day, you must submit it at the beginning of the next class. Attendance: Although attendance is not part of your grade, I will take attendance each day for two reasons: first, to get to know your names, and second, to record who comes to class on time regularly. I will not make a special effort to help students get caught up who are habitually tardy or absent. Grading: Grades will be determined by the following components: Quizzes: There will be a quiz at the end of each chapter. Each quiz is worth 100 points. At the end of the course, the lowest quiz score will be dropped. If you are absent the day of a quiz, you must make it up within 2 class days. Once I pass back the quizzes, you may no longer make it up. Homework: Assigned homework problems from the textbook are listed on the course calendar which can be found later in this document. You will receive full credit for homework just by doing it; homework will not be graded for correctness since it is part of the learning experience. Homework is due before taking the chapter quiz and will NOT be given credit once we go over it in class. Labs: Labs will also be worth 100 points each and will usually require the Minitab software. Lab worksheets with instructions will be provided. If you are absent the day of a lab, you must make it up on your own time within 2 weeks. Midterm and Final Exam: There will be a paper-and-pencil midterm exam during the scheduled exam week (see the syllabus calendar below) and a comprehensive paper-and-pencil final exam at the end of the semester. Your score on the exams will count double when it is averaged in with your other grades. Both the midterm and final exams will be open book and open notes. Course Outline for MTH 147 2

Grading Scale: A 92% or better A- 90-91.9% B+ 88-89.9% B 82-87.9% B- 80-81.9% C+ 78-79.9% C 70-77.9% D 60-69.9% F 0-59.9% Late Work: I will adhere strictly to the due dates listed in this syllabus. If you have a special circumstance that causes you to have to submit an assignment after the due date, let me know ahead of time. Incompletes: If you do not finish the course by the last day of class, I can give you a grade of Incomplete ONLY IF YOU HAVE COMPLETED AT LEAST 75% OF THE COURSE. If you have not completed at least 75% of the course by the last day of the semester, you will have to take the grade you have at that time or make up the course the following semester. Here is the university policy on Incomplete grades: Incomplete Grade. An I grade can be assigned by the instructor when all three of the following conditions are met: 1. Student has the potential to pass the course, 2. Student has not completed all assignments for reasons deemed justified by the instructor, and 3. The student has notified the instructor prior to the end of the grading period. If all three conditions listed above are not met, the instructor has the option of assigning an X or of assigning a letter grade based on completed work. Please note that an I automatically becomes an F if not resolved by the last day of instruction of the following semester. The grade of Incomplete (I) is given when the work in a course has been generally passing, but when some specifically required task has not been completed through no fault of the student. The date assigned by the faculty member for completion of the work for undergraduate courses cannot be later than the last day of classes of the next term following the term in which the Incomplete grade was received. (The time limit may extend up to four weeks into the fall semester for Incomplete grades received during the spring semester.) For all cases, the time limit applies whether the student is enrolled or not. If a grade change is not submitted by the end of the time limit, the Incomplete becomes an F. X Grade. The grade of X can be assigned by the instructor when an attending/participating student has stopped attending/participating without notification and has not completed all assignments for reasons that cannot be determined by the end of the grading period. An X automatically becomes an F if not resolved by the last day of instruction of the following semester. Should the faculty member choose not to submit a grade for a student, e.g., student never attended, a grade of X will be assigned. Course Participation Course Outline for MTH 147 3

It is expected that you attend class regularly and be on time and prepared to learn. I understand that early classes are difficult for some people; if this is the case for you, please change your schedule while you can still get into a later section. Academic Honesty Cheating will NOT be tolerated. While there is certainly nothing wrong with having help with the assignments or working together on them, the work should be your own in the end. For quizzes and for the midterm and final exams, no communication devices of any type will be permitted. The midterm and final exam are open book and open notes, and you may also bring a calculator. If your cell phone is your calculator, please bring another type of calculator to the exam.
