UQ Abroad EXPLORE YOUR GLOBAL OPPORTUNITIES Celene, University of Glasgow, UK

WHY HAVE A GLOBAL EXPERIENCE? Complement your degree and gain a new perspective on your studies. Challenge yourself and become more independent. Discover new career and academic opportunities. Make new friends form around the world. Improve your foreign language skills. Experience a different culture. Enhance your employability. Explore the world. WHAT IS UQ ABROAD? Participating in a global experience is one of the most exciting and rewarding opportunities you can have while studying at The University of Queensland. UQ Abroad manages the semester-based exchange program and coordinates a wide range of short-term programs all over the world. We will support you through the entire process, from choosing a program that suits your needs and goals, to applying and preparing to go, and to completing the adventure and joining the globally-connected UQ Abroad community. A global experience through UQ Abroad is the ideal way to enhance your employability and have the experience of a lifetime. Jade, University of Edinburgh, UK STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAM This program offers you the opportunity to study overseas for a semester or year on exchange, while gaining credit towards your UQ degree. With over 200 exchange partners in 41 countries, student exchange is an ideal way to combine study and travel. While on exchange, tuition fees at the host university are waived as you remain enrolled at and pay fees to UQ. Travel and living costs will differ depending on where you go, your plans and your spending habits. Many of our partner institutions in non-english speaking countries offer a wide range of courses taught in English. However, student exchange is also a great time to improve your foreign language skills or learn a new language. MARGARET, Universidad Salamanca, Spain (studend exchange program) I went on exchange first and foremost to improve my Spanish, and there is certainly no better way to do that than living independently in a Spanish-speaking country. I was reasonably fluent when I arrived in Spain, but my confidence and conversational fluency definitely improved, as did my accent. LEILA, Winter at Yonsei University, South Korea (short-term project) I m in my last semester at UQ, and I wanted to make sure I took any and all experiences available to me. I d already been on a long-term exchange in 2014, but I really wanted something completely different and to go somewhere I d never really considered before. No one I knew had been to Seoul. I, myself, knew barely anything about South Korea and the comments I saw here and there relating to it were always very positive. It was definitely one of the best decisions I d ever made. I met some incredible people, saw beautiful sights, and experienced a vibrant and extraordinary city that I would return to in a heartbeat.

AMELIA, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, Germany (student exchange program) Exchange pushes you to do so many things that are out of your comfort zone, which has made me a much more confident and assertive person. JOSHUA, Cambodia Humanitarian Design Summit (short-term program) Whilst many of my friends gained vacation work with local firms, I wanted something different. I wanted to be placed in a challenging situation testing both my personal boundaries and engineering skills whilst contributing to a greater cause. The EWB Humanitarian Design Summit certainly exceeded my expectations and it has been one of the most rewarding things I ve ever done. It has brought my ambitions more into focus and motivated me to apply my engineering skills to improve the wellbeing of disadvantaged communities. INTERNATIONAL SHORT-TERM PROGRAMS If a full semester or year of exchange is not for you, there are also opportunities to have a global experience during the semester breaks. You can choose a short-term program and receive credit towards your UQ degree or choose a program for the experience alone and not receive credit. Short term programs are ideal if your degree program is not conducive to a semester-long exchange or if you want to make the most of your semester breaks. Many of our international partners offer summer and winter programs, where you can immerse yourself in language and culture, or take courses that are unique to that location. Participating in these programs are a great way to experience more of the world, make valuable contacts and make your semester break intellectually stimulating. FINANCIAL SUPPORT Wondering how you will finance your global opportunity? Check out these options. SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRANTS UQ has a generous scholarship program to support your participation in a global experience. Student Exchange Scholarships and Travel Grants are awarded on the basis of academic merit or attendance at strategic partner institutions. Travel scholarships for specific disciplines are also available from some of UQ s Schools and Faculties. CENTRELINK Students may be able to continue receiving Centrelink payments while studying overseas if they are receiving credit towards their degree program. OS-HELP LOAN SCHEME The Australian Government provides financial assistance to eligible Commonwealth supported students to undertake part of their course of study overseas. The overseas study must count towards your current UQ program requirements. Once paid, the OS-HELP loan is consolidated with your accumulated HELP debt. The amount of the loan varies depending on the location of the study. In 2016, eligible students may borrow up to $6,470 for study not in Asia and $7764 for study in Asia. uq.edu.au/myadvisor/os-help-21170 AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT SCHOLARSHIPS NEW COLOMBO PLAN The New Colombo Plan (NCP) Scholarship Program is a prestigious scholarship scheme that provides an opportunity for high achieving undergraduate students to undertake study in one of the eligible host locations across Indo-Pacific region. The scholarships are valued at up to AU$67,000. Scholarship recipients must undertake a study program (for at least one semester, but may be up to two semesters in duration) for which they will receive credit at their home university. WESTPAC BICENTENNIAL FOUNDATION ASIAN EXCHANGE SCHOLARSHIP The Westpac Bicentennial Foundation Asian Exchange Scholarship was established in 2014 as a gift to future generations of Australians to commemorate Westpac s 200th anniversary in 2017. This scholarship, valued at $10,000, offers students the opportunity to spend a semester studying at one of eight leading Asian universities. scholarships.uq.edu.au/scholarship/new-colombo-planscholarship-program scholarships.uq.edu.au/scholarship/westpac-bicentennialfoundation-asian-exchange-scholarship

Lachlan, Technical University of Munich, Germany UQ ADVANTAGE AWARD Gain extra recognition for your global experience by participating in the UQ Advantage Award The UQ Advantage Award is a program that encourages you to get involved in activities outside the classroom during your degree. By joining the program, you will participate in a range of activities and symposia which will help you to gain a better understanding of the world and develop key competencies that employers value. It is a great way to gain recognition for your involvement in extra-curricular experiences such as undergraduate research, global experiences and leadership programs. It has broadened my global perspective to live in another country, understand another culture, and meet a diverse range of people. Overall, I have developed my independence, confidence and initiative from living and travelling independently in another country. KLAUDIA, University of Edinburgh, UK (student exchange program) The interpersonal skills I developed while at Edinburgh are not only beneficial to me in a personal sense but also in a professional one. I feel more confident in putting out my ideas, letting myself be creative, and trying new things. I look forward to using my new skills and getting more involved in research and the community. AARON, Sun Yat-sen University, People s Republic of China (student exchange program) Being immersed in one of the country s top academic institutions gave me a broad understanding of the Chinese way of thinking, institutional structures and future national aspirations. Asian culture is significantly different and adapting to this challenge was both enjoyable and illuminating. 105068 Jun16 CRICOS Provider Number 00025B
