NATIONAL INSTITUTIONAL RANKING FRAMEWORK (NIRF) 2018 STELLA MARIS COLLEGE (AUTONOMOUS), CHENNAI 600086 Contact Email for comments and feedback: nirfsmc@stellamariscollege.edu.in Profile of the College NIRF 2018 Report submitted to NIRF 2018 Facilities for Physically Challenged Students Profile of the College: Stella Maris College (Autonomous) is a Catholic minority institution of higher education for women founded on 15 August 1947 and is affiliated to the University of Madras. It is managed by the Society of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary (FMM), a congregation founded in Ootacamund, Tamil Nadu in 1877. The College became autonomous in 1987. It has nineteen departments offering 42 programmes, and an enrolment of more than 5000 students from diverse backgrounds, communities and nations. Postgraduate diplomas and certificates courses are also offered. The Choice Based Credit System was introduced in 1997. The College was accredited by NAAC and awarded an A grade and a CGPA of 3.68 on a 4 point scale in 2013. It was conferred the status of College with Potential for Excellence in, and honoured with the status of Pride of the Catholic Church by the Catholic Bishops Conference in. DST-FIST programmes have been awarded to the science departments and Star Department Status awarded to these departments in 2013. The College also offers two B.Voc. Degree Programmes: Food Processing and Quality Control and Sustainable Energy Management.

Vision and Mission: The vision of the College is to build a vibrant and inclusive learning community in a culture of excellence sustained by a sound value system that promotes responsible citizenship and effects social change. The mission of the College is to empower young women to face the challenges of life with courage and commitment, to be builders of a humane and just society, and to promote a learning community in which all, especially those from less privileged backgrounds feel a part of the collaborative high quality educational process which is value based and leads to holistic growth. In seeking to mould women of character who will be self-reliant and work towards social transformation, the College has established an educational road map that provides a framework for quality education and stimuli for lifetime learning. A student-centric, participatory teaching-learning-evaluation system assures the students of optimal educational benefits. Offering courses in traditional Arts and Science courses and in emerging areas such as Vocational Programmes, the curriculum promotes national development, fosters global competencies and facilitates skills training to meet the challenges of a competitive workplace. The College offers student recruitment and placement services in various multinational corporate organisations like Goldman Sachs, KPMG, Infosys, Wipro, TCS, CTS, Google and Ernst & Young. Many students have entered the civil services as well as the armed forces, Government NGOs, INGOs. Focus on inclusive education is a core function of the college and a number of services and support programmes are made available to students from less privileged backgrounds. These include personal guidance for both academic and personal matters through the Mentoring Programme, professional counselling services, the Language Partnership Programme for students whose competence in English requires improvement, and the Pathway Programme to help students from marginalised sections grow in confidence. Various clubs on campus encourage the interests of students to channelise their many talents. The Book Bank scheme enables economically deprived students to avail of textbooks free of charge. Financial support by way of scholarships and other avenues for financial aid are open for deserving students.

An Appeal and Redressal Committee and a Ragging Prevention Committee are active on campus. The College has evolved a Green Policy for environmental protection and sustenance by implementing several environmental friendly measures on campus. The College has signed MoUs with institutions of repute for faculty and student exchange programmes. The College has sufficient infrastructure on campus for its various functions: Eleven buildings with 80 classrooms and administrative offices, a two storied library with a mezzanine floor, 29 laboratories, auditoria, two painting studios, a separate building for the canteen, the bank and for games administration. A separate building for the extension project centre on campus, SMCDRIVE. Ramps and lifts to aid differently abled students. Four hostel buildings with a total capacity for 485 residents. A residence for the religious sisters of the management on campus. Chapel Facilities include the following: The central library with 108255 books, 9957 Journals, including e-journals, 808 CDROMs/DVDs/Cassettes, computers, servers, electronic resources, digital repository DSpace. Sports facilities: courts for Lawn Tennis, Basketball, Volley Ball, Football, and Hockey, Obstacle Course, Kho Kho, Cricket, Table Tennis.
