Performing and Fine Arts

Studying the Arts in Houston Whether music, drama or studio arts is your passion, UST offers degree programs to help you develop and refine your talents. Strategic partnerships with organizations in Houston, the nation s fourth-largest city, expose our students to world-class entertainers and artists. And our small classes allow more time for individual interaction with professors. Nestled in the heart of the Houston Museum District, UST is the ideal place to study. The internationally acclaimed Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH) sits directly south of the UST campus. The world-renowned Menil Collection and numerous other museums are in the immediate neighborhood, providing art students easy access to a treasure trove of original art works. UST also enjoys close proximity to the Houston Theater District, which includes nine organizations in all of the major performing arts disciplines ballet, music, opera and theater. Year-round performances take place at the Alley Theatre, Hobby Center for the Performing Arts, Jones Hall and Wortham Theater Center. UST Performing and Fine Arts Center To attract and serve students in the creative fields, UST will establish a higher profile for the arts on campus and provide exceptional venues to accommodate them. A planned Performing and Fine Arts Center will give students the opportunity to refine their talents, while affording UST a greater, more impactful presence in the community.

Using what I learned during my progression through the program, I will be able to implement idea generation, visual problem solving and other professional skills. And studying art history enabled me to see the progression of the field and my own work in a historical context. Jamie Jacobs 16, BA/BFA, Studio Arts Studio Arts Studio Arts, BA Studio Arts, BA/BFA stthom.edu/studioarts The studio arts program prepares talented students for careers as professional artists, master of fine arts graduate programs and a variety of arts-related employment. All studio arts students proceed through fundamental level courses to advanced specialty work. After a successful portfolio review, students may complete either a traditional BA or our five-year dual BA/BFA in studio arts. Students majoring in studio arts choose a concentration in: Painting Printmaking Ceramics Sculpture Jewelry Drawing Life Drawing Photography Digital Photography The Glassell School of Art UST studio arts students enjoy the best of two campuses. Non-studio art coursework is taken on the UST campus, and studio arts coursework is taken at the Glassell School of Art MFAH. With a faculty of more than 20 practicing professional artists, individual mentorship is possible. Career Opportunities Our graduates work as freelance artists, illustrators, interior designers, gallery directors and teachers. Recent graduates have also been accepted in MFA programs in photography, painting, sculpture, ceramics and more; and PhD programs in biomedical visualization. They have also started businesses and founded graphic arts companies. Studio arts students are invited to participate in the highly competitive Glassell School of Art student art shows as well as student arts exhibits on the UST campus.

The drama program is one of the best programs because it is small. Every student learns about both onstage and backstage theatre. Every production is put together by the students so that they know a little bit about every aspect of theatre before they leave. Alex Brokmeyer 16, Drama Drama Drama, BA stthom.edu/drama The drama program prepares students to compete successfully in theater- and performancerelated pursuits. All drama students become involved as actors, theater technicians, writers and emerging new leaders in the arts. Students focus on their own interests among acting, directing, play writing or design. Drama Scholarships Partial tuition scholarships are awarded based on competitive auditions conducted in the spring semester. Actors perform monologues, and writers and designers submit portfolios of their work. The priority deadline for auditions is March 1. Career Opportunities Recent graduates have worked as actors on stage, in films and for television, playwrights, stagehands, voice-over talent, makeup artists, scenic and costume designers, directors, technical directors, stage managers and theater arts teachers. Recent graduates have been accepted to MFA acting programs and film schools. UST s small size allows for a personal, intensive, conservatory-style program offering considerable one-onone training. Freshmen and new transfer students are equally eligible to be cast in major roles.

I chose UST because it was close to home, and I wanted a school where professors pay attention to each student. My degree will allow me to bring beauty to people wherever they are. I aim to be deeply involved in church music in the future, and this degree will help me. Max Mullenax 18, Music Music Music, BA Music Education, BA stthom.edu/music The Music Department offers opportunities for students to master the principles, skills and techniques necessary to be successful in the performing arts. Scholarships Auditions are required for students to be considered for scholarships and other department-sponsored financial aid. Performance grants for non-majors are available based on the needs of the performance groups. Career Opportunities Graduates have been accepted to conservatories and master s and doctoral programs. They also work as music teachers; performers in opera and musical theatre; composers and arrangers; church music directors, organists and pianists; and performers in military bands, orchestras, chamber groups, jazz bands and ensembles. A Bachelor of Arts in music focuses on instrumental or vocal performance. A combination of the core curriculum and music courses prepares students for graduate school and professional performance after college. A Bachelor of Arts in Music Education prepares students to pass state teacher certification for early childhood through 12th grade in choral and instrumental music. Courses are similar to those seeking performance degrees.

Student Organizations and Volunteering Learning takes place inside and outside of the classroom. We encourage our students to learn from each other and expose themselves to as much art as they can, in whatever form they choose. We strongly encourage students to become actively involved in student organizations and honor societies, including: Mu Phi Epsilon International professional music fraternity. Gamma Tau chapter includes members from the faculty and music majors or minors. Student Music Society is open to all students who major or minor in music. Art History stthom.edu/finearts The purpose of the Art History Program is to enhance the intellectual, aesthetic and spiritual dimensions of students understanding in the communicative power of art, design and architecture. Art represents and questions the deepest cultural and spiritual values of a society, and knowledge of these values can deepen the life of the mind and spirit. Besides preparing students for graduate school and/or careers in the visual arts, our program contributes to the overall Liberal Arts experience on campus. UST Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, Wind Ensemble, University Singers Students learn repertoires and ensemble techniques through selected masterworks from all musical eras. The music faculty collaborates to provide professional training for students to enhance their learning experiences. UST music ensembles are open to all UST students. Alpha Psi Omega Alpha Alpha Beta chapter of National Theater Honor Society. Membership is by invitation and is dependent on the quality and diversity of the individual s achievements in drama program activities. UST has a rich legacy in teaching art history, covering the entire spectrum of western civilization from classical antiquity to contemporary art. We offer a minor degree as well as a BA degree in Liberal Arts, with a concentration in Art History.
