Iowa AAPD Student Group to Participate in Annual Trick-or-Treat Night at Sycamore Mall The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) dental student group will be at Sycamore Mall, Iowa City, on October 29 from 5-7 pm. The Iowa predoctoral and postdoctoral students will participate in the annual Trick-or-Treat night by handing out toothbrushes and toothpaste as well as providing oral hygiene education with puppets, stickers, costumes, and handouts to the children. In addition to a cache of toothbrushes the students already have, Proctor and Gamble has donated additional toothbrushes and is also lending a Sparkle toothpaste costume. As Jessica Flanigan (D3), AAPD Iowa chapter president commented, It should be very fun! Misha Lockey, Celia Mimms and Melissa Brown Represent College of Dentistry at Second Annual Teen Summit The Iowa City- Cedar Rapids Alumnae Chapter & Delta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., held their Second Annual Teen Summit on Saturday, October 17, 2009, at the University of Iowa Belin-Blank Center. Misha Lockey (D2), Celia Mimms (D2), and Melissa Brown (D3) attended the Teen Summit as representatives of the UI College of Dentistry. The theme this year was Empowering Our Youth in the 21 st Century. The organization s goal is to help young African American men and women between the ages of 14-18 acquire the necessary tools for personal and professional success. The event included a series of workshops as well as a Career Expo with tables of information and individuals who answered questions about different careers. Now Ralph is in need of our assistance. Ralph has been placed on disability and needs time donated to his sick leave account to reach the 90 days necessary for his disability funds to begin. Please consider lending a hand to the valuable friend of the College of Dentistry. DSB Weekly UI History of Medicine Society The UI History of Medicine Society is an informal group of students, faculty, staff, and members of the community who share an interest in the history of medicine and the health sciences. The Society s presentations represent a wide variety of subjects, and the speakers are all noted authorities in their respective fields. The first presentation of the UI History of Medicine Society, Norwegian Folk Medicine on the American Prairie, will be given on October 27, 2009, by Kathleen M. Stokker, PhD, director of Scandinavian Studies at Luther College. The meeting will be held from 5:30-6:30 pm in room 2032 in the Main Library.
