The Assignment Dropbox allows exchange of files between the instructor and course users. Using electronic submission of files is a great way to organize submissions. No need for participants to email assignments where submissions are often difficult to keep track of or organize. You can provide feedback to the participants, return submissions, and tie grades to the grade book. Create an Assignment folder 1. From the Evaluation group select Assignment Dropbox: 2. From the Folder List page, click the New Folder button: 3. Set Assignment settings in the Properties tab: o In the Name textbox, type a name for your dropbox. For clarity and alignment, it is recommended that the assignment, the corresponding dropbox, and the corresponding gradebook item all have the same title: o To generate a report that checks students submissions for plagiarism, check the OriginalityCheck Enable for this folder box. Enabling the OriginalityCheck also allows instructor and student access to Turnitin s Feedback Studio, a much more robust grading platform: o In the Folder Type option, you must determine whether each individual student is submitting their own assignment (check Individual submission folder ) or if a single student may submit an assignment on behalf of a group (check Group submission folder ). Note that for a Group Submission, Groups must be previously established in the Group tool: Office of Online Learning 4 www.onlinelearningnscc.wordpress.com
o To associate the Assignment Dropbox with a grade item (so that students grades will be automatically sent to the gradebook for student view), select the Category and Grade Item: o In the Out Of text box, input the maximum number of possible points for this assignment. This will automatically adjust the Student View Preview : o You may add an existing rubric or create a new one using the Rubrics and Default Scoring Rubric options: o Include any instructions for the assignment as well as any necessary attachments using the Instructions and the Attached Files options: Office of Online Learning 5 www.onlinelearningnscc.wordpress.com
o Click the Show Submission Options to expand the Submission Option section: Choose whether students can submit an unlimited number of files per submission or a single file per submission, and choose to keep all submissions, keep only the most recent submission, or to only allow a single submission: 4. Set availability settings in the Restrictions tab Office of Online Learning 6 www.onlinelearningnscc.wordpress.com
o If desired, input Start, Due, and End dates: Note that assigning a start date means that students are able to view the assignment dropbox, but are unable to make a submission. Note that students are able to make a submission after the due date, but those submissions are marked as late. Students may not make any submissions past the end date. If you do not accept any late assignments, the due date and the end date should be the same. o Set any release conditions using the Release Conditions options (e.g. in order to make a submission, students must take a specific quiz first): o If necessary, allow any users special access: 5. If you wish to associate Learning Objectives, do so in the Objectives tab. 6. Click on Save to save the changes or Save and Close to save and return to the Assignment Dropbox list page. Note that if a grade item has been associated with the assignment dropbox, a ruler icon will display next to the folder name: Office of Online Learning 7 www.onlinelearningnscc.wordpress.com

Select Assignment Dropbox from the Evaluation group: 2. Locate the dropbox you wish to edit, click the action arrow, and select Edit Folder : 3. Update the assignment as desired. 4. Grade Assignments When grading assignments that have been submitted via dropbox, if the OrginalityCheck has not been enabled, there are two options. The first option is to grade submissions within D2L. This option is best suited for assignments that don t require detailed feedback within the body of the assignment. However, an assignment that requires more general feedback would lend itself well to being graded within D2L. The second grading option would be to bulk download students submissions, leave feedback from your desktop (for example, using Microsoft Word s Track Changes or Comment function) and then attach the new edited files as Feedback Files. This process of bulk downloading and reuploading student assignments becomes quite cumbersome. If the OriginalityCheck has been enabled, there is a third option that is most recommended because of its user-friendly interface and more robust grading capabilities. See how to grade using Turnitin s Feedback Studio. Grade Submissions within D2L 1. Locate the dropbox by selecting Assignment Dropbox from the Evaluation Group: 2. Click the title of the dropbox you wish to grade: Note: in order to grade dropbox submissions, verify that the dropbox folder contains a ruler which indicates its association with a gradebook item. 3. In the Users tab, you will see a list of all student submissions: Office of Online Learning 9 www.onlinelearningnscc.wordpress.com
To grade individual assignments within D2L, click on the file you wish to grade: This will open the Evaluate Submission page. 4. Here, you will see a split screen: on the left, the student s submission; on the right, the instructor s evaluation options. Review the student submission in the left panel, and then fill in the Evaluation options in the right panel: A. If you would like to use a previously designed rubric or would like to create a rubric now to use in grading this assignment, do so by selecting [Associate Rubric] or [Create Rubric] Office of Online Learning 10 www.onlinelearningnscc.wordpress.com
B. Assign a numerical score C. Leave constructive feedback for the student D. Include any additional files, audio, or video, if desired E. Publish the student s grade to the gradebook, or save this grade as a draft to be published at a late time. F. Select Next Student to grade the next student s submission. Batch Download and Grade Follow these instructions to download all student submissions and leave feedback within the file. Assigning grades must be done separately. 1. Locate the dropbox by selecting Assignment Dropbox from the Evaluation Group: 2. Click the title of the dropbox you wish to grade: Note: in order to grade dropbox submissions, verify that the dropbox folder contains a ruler which indicates its association with a gradebook item. 3. Click the Files tab: 4. Scroll to the bottom of the page. There, you will see a list of all student submissions. Check the Check all box to select all submitted files and then click Download : This will download a.zip file containing all student submissions to your computer. Office of Online Learning 11 www.onlinelearningnscc.wordpress.com
5. Locate the.zip file on your computer and Extract all files: It is extremely important that you do not make any changes to the names of the documents during this process. 6. Once the files have been extracted, you may open each file individually, make any changes or corrections, leave any feedback, etc. It may be helpful to either take note of the final grade you are assigning to each student on a separate sheet of paper or directly in the D2L Gradebook, as this process is solely a method for providing more detailed feedback. It is best to use the Save function instead of the Save As function in order to preserve the file names. 7. Once all of the files have been edited, graded, or reviewed, re-enter the appropriate dropbox by clicking on the dropbox title from the Assignment Dropbox link in the Evaluation group. 8. Click the Add Feedback Files button at the top of the screen: This will prompt the Add Feedback Files dialog box: Office of Online Learning 12 www.onlinelearningnscc.wordpress.com
9. Drag or upload the feedback files and click Upload. These files are automatically associated with the student who submitted the assignment because D2L will automatically recognize the user by the unique identifying number at the beginning of the file name. This is why preserving the file name is crucial: Office of Online Learning 13 www.onlinelearningnscc.wordpress.com
10. Select the checkbox for Overwrite Existing Files to regrade dropbox items that had previously been assessed for the assignment. Clear the Overwrite Existing Files checkbox to keep duplicates: 11. Once files have been uploaded, click Add : This will prompt an alert box at the bottom of your screen indicating that feedback files have been attached successfully: 12. To complete the grading process, you will need to enter the gradebook and manually enter the final grades each student received on their assignment.
