Feasibility Study Goals Community and school stakeholders have proposed several scenarios for Coolidge. We will be exploring the following options in the feasibility study: Comprehensive HS Co-location options for the HS: Middle school STAY Partner space Project phasing As we explore these options, we want your input on several aspects of the new school Our feasibility architects will explore these possibilities and pass on their work to the project architects 4
Community Working Group Overview Members represent their communities Not a decisionmaking body, but advisory Weigh in on programming and elements of school planning 5
Disclaimers! Major disclaimer #1: Our goal tonight is not to decide on a particular option We need specific feedback on each option that we put forward the more the better Major disclaimer #2: The project architects have the power to (and probably will!) alter significant pieces of this design This is a thought exercise but not the final product Don t get married to very specific design pieces 6
Next steps for feasibility study Present options tonight and gather feedback Architects will produce final report that details pros/cons of each option and community feedback received DCPS will make the final decision on the direction for the school, taking into account: Projected population growth Parent and community feedback regarding academic programming Community feedback on feasibility study options Phasing possibilities Enrollment and facility capacity projections Final report in late-october 7

Option 1 presentation High School and STAY/partner space (minimal new construction) 17
Option 1 This option explores how the current Education Specification can be provided within the existing structure as per the base case. It assumes that no additional space is provided and identifies where major intervention may be needed to provide well arranged teaching spaces. 1 G 3 2

Option 1 - Primary architectural moves: New single story High School student entrance on 5 th St NW Creation of a student zone associated with new entrance grouping student services Remodelled main entrance foyer Enlarging existing student entrance closest to the track Relocated parking Upgraded stadium seating and new roof Surplus area 30, 463ft 2 New build area 5,736ft 2
Option 1 discussion What are your thoughts on re-locating the parking lot? What are your thoughts on the new view/entrance off of 5 th street? What are your thoughts on adjacencies (how the general spaces relate to each other). Can things be arranged in a way that makes more sense? Consider each floor. What else can be done to improve the view of the building from the neighborhood? What are your thoughts on the phasing in this approach? What other questions/concerns do you have about this approach? 27
Option 2 presentation High School + Middle School (New construction confined to MS) 28
Option 2 This second option explores the impact of using the surplus space to accommodate a new Middle School. Further Middle School accommodation is provided in a new teaching block and a new entrance and administration block. 1 3 G 2

Option 2 discussion What are your thoughts on the main entrance locations for the MS and the HS? Right now, the campuses are very distinct and separate. What are your thoughts on this approach? What spaces should be shared by the campuses in your view? What are your thoughts on adjacencies (how the general spaces relate to each other). Can things be arranged in a way that makes more sense? Consider each floor. What are your thoughts on the new view/entrance off of 5 th street for the middle school? What are your thoughts on the phasing in this approach? What other questions/concerns do you have about this approach? 39
Option 3 presentation High School and Middle School (new construction throughout) 40
Option 3 This study is more ambitious. It provides a similar amount of new accommodation as option 2 but places it more prominently. 1 3 This is a more outward facing proposal and reinforces the position of The Frank R. Williams Activity Center. The new Mass Media area is placed over a combined Student/Community entrance. G 2 Health Professions is sited at the opposite end of this refurbished link.

What are your thoughts on the interior views of the student entrance and student services lobby? What are your thoughts on the interior views of the media center? What are your thoughts on the use of the courtyards/atriums in this approach? Could they be used differently? What are your thoughts on the phasing in this approach?
