Session 1 - Leader Preparation Total Time 50 Minutes Welcome 15 Minutes Lesson Activities 30 Minutes Closing 5 minutes Session Objectives This session will introduce the boys to: The rules, guidelines and expectations of fitclub 4Boys. The definition of fit. The four components of fit RECHARGE, MOOD, FOOD and MOVE. Learn the fit-huddle. Snacks Snacks Napkins Hand sanitizer for before and after snacks Garbage can/bag for snacks Water or bring throwaway cups for boys to fill up at a drinking fountain Handouts for Participants At the end of the session the boys will take home the following: One fit Challenge Card from the deck provided fitclub 4Boys! Lesson 1 Welcome and What is fitclub 4Boys? Time 15 Minutes Activity Purpose The purpose of this lesson is to provide the boys with tools to be successful in fitclub 4Boys. Objectives In this activity, boys will gain an understanding of: What fitclub 4Boys is about fitclub 4Boys rules, guidelines and expectations for boys during fitclub time Materials Needed Name tags one for each leader and participant (optional) Attendance Sheet Tell Me a Little About You (one for each participant) Pencils or pens (one for each participant Snacks Napkins Hand sanitizer Garbage can/bag fit Leader Cue Card Lesson 1 Talk Time! and Wrap it Up! Session 1 - Lesson 1 - fitclub Focus Welcome and What is fitclub 4Boys? Gather the boys to the center of the activity space. Welcome the boys to fitclub 4Boys. Introduce yourself and any other leaders that are facilitating fitclub 4Boys. Hand out snacks and beverages to each boy to allow them to fuel up for fitclub 4Boys. Allow time for the boys to eat their snacks. Take attendance. While taking attendance, hand out a name tag to each boy (optional). As the boys names are called, ask each boy to say the following things about himself: 1. Why did you join fitclub 4Boys? 2. What are you most excited for in regards to fitclub 4Boys? Talk Time! Welcome the boys and thank them for joining fitclub 4Boys. fitclub 4Boys is about learning how to make healthy choices for your body and mind. fitclub 4Boys is about having fun. fitclub 4Boys is about playing games while learning about fit and being fit. Being fit is about making choices to be a healthy you. fitclub 4Boys! Session 1 fit & the fit Connection 5

Session 1 - Lesson 1 - fitclub Focus Rules, Guidelines, & Expectations Rules and Consequences: Establishing rules and consequences will provide structure for fitclub 4Boys. Progressive discipline is suggested: 1. Sit out a lesson activity a. Chance to succeed 2. Sit out current and next activity 3. Sit out a session 4. Remove from fitclub 4Boys Provide participants with the rules that have been established for fitclub 4Boys and give clear and concise consequences for breaking the rules. Expectations: fitclub 4Boys participant expectations include: 1. Wearing appropriate clothing and shoes 2. Coming ready to participate Guidelines: Share a brief introduction to the facility and relevant guidelines. Examples of guidelines include bathroom location, frequency of water break options, etc. Use the space below to note the rules, expectations, and guidelines you will be implementing in your fitclub 4Boys program: fitclub 4Boys! Session 1 - Lesson 1 - fitclub Focus Optional (use if you are tracking fitclub 4Boys outcomes) 1. Hand out the Tell Me a Little About You handout along with a pen or pencil to each participant. 2. Read each question on the handout and provide a few seconds for each boy to answer. a. Reading the questions out loud is suggested to allow for the various reading levels of the boys in the group. b. Note to the boys that no answer is right or wrong; you just want to know them better as a fitclub 4Boys member. 3. Collect the Tell Me a Little About You handouts. Allow the boys to throw away their scraps from snacks, sanitize their hands if necessary and get ready for the next activity. Lesson 2 Ready, Set, Go Brain Race Time 5 Minutes Activity Purpose This activity introduces: What being fit is. Creating an awareness of the four fit components RECHARGE, MOOD, FOOD, and MOVE. Objective In this activity, boys will gain an understanding of: What being fit means The components that make up fit; RECHARGE, MOOD, FOOD and MOVE fit is about making healthy choices Materials Needed 5 blank pieces of paper (1 paper for each group of 3-4 participants) 5 pens or pencils (1 for each group) Timer or Stopwatch fit Leader Cue Card Lesson 2 Talk Time! and Wrap it Up! Session 1 - Lesson 2 - fit Focus Ready, Set, Go Brain Race Introduce the Activity Have the boys sit in a circle and give the boys the directions for the upcoming activity. 1. Explain that this activity will help the boys know what fit is. 2. Give the boys the directions for the upcoming activity. a. They will be divided into groups. b. Each group will get one piece of paper and one pen or pencil. c. Each group will pick a leader. d. You will set a timer for 1 minute and then ask a question; the group leader will write down the group s answers. e. When the timer is done, the leader will share the group s answers with everyone. Do the Activity 1. Divide the boys into teams; the number of participants per team should be equal. a. Allow a minimum of 3 boys per group. 2. Have the group pick a leader. 3. Give each group one piece of paper and one pen or pencil. 4. Set a timer for 1 minute and ask the following question: a. What do you think being fit means? 5. Start the timer and tell the boys to begin brainstorming and talking about what they think being fit means. 6. Once the timer is up: a. Ask each group (one at a time) to share what they think being fit means. b. Allow for a brief discussion. c. Next, discuss what being fit means relative to the Talk Time! points below. Talk Time! What is fit? fit is about making healthy choices in your day. fit has 4 pieces that make up being fit: RECHARGE, MOOD, FOOD and MOVE. fit is NOT just about eating right and getting your exercise. Being fit is about having the motivation and energy to make healthy choices to eat well and move throughout your day. fitclub 4Boys! Session 1 fit & the fit Connection 9

Session 1 - Lesson 2 - fit Focus Wrap it Up! Message Check if you know fit 1. ASK: Your friend says that he is really fit because he runs a mile every day. Is that what being fit means? 2. ANSWER: No. Being fit is about making healthy choices. Remember to be fit fit is about making healthy choices. Be fit Make healthy choices all day, every day. Think fit to be fit. Cue for Next Activity: Remember when we talked about fit having 4 pieces? Let s learn about our first fit piece, MOOD. Get in a circle and start marching with high-knees in place while we learn about our next activity. fitclub 4Boys! Session 1 fit & the fit Connection 10

Lesson 3 MOOD Run Time 10 Minutes Activity Purpose This activity introduces: The fit component of MOOD and its role in fit. MOOD as an important influencer in the choices we make in the moments in our day. Objectives In this activity, boys will gain an understanding of: MOOD is how you feel at a particular moment. MOOD s role in fit as an influencer of the choices you make. The moods you are in throughout the day that impact the choices you make. Materials Needed 20 Cones (place markers) MOOD Leader Cards Feelings Put Me in A MOOD handout (one for each participant) 20 Pens or pencils Timer or Stopwatch MOOD Leader Cue Card Lesson 3 Talk Time! and Wrap it Up! Message Notes (page 28) Prepare for the Activity Have boys stand in a circle and march in place while they wait for the activity to be set up. If you do not have a fitclub helper, ask one of the fitclub boys to help you set up activity. Ask your fitclub helper (or participant) to randomly place 20 cones around the activity area and place a MOOD Leader Card and a pen or pencil UNDER each cone. Set-Up! Session 1 - Lesson 3 - MOOD Focus MOOD Run Introduce the Activity Have boys continue to stand in a circle and march in place. 1. Explain that this activity will help everyone learn about the different feelings we all have that put us in a MOOD. 2. Give boys the directions for the upcoming activity. a. This activity is like a match game. b. Each boy will get a Feelings Put Me In a Mood handout with pictures of different feelings on it. c. They will get 2-3 minutes to complete this activity. d. They will run to each cone to find the MOOD Leader Card under the cone. e. They need to match the picture on the Leader Card under the cone to the picture on their handout. f. They are to write down the feeling on the MOOD Leader Card with the corresponding picture on their Feelings Put Me In a Mood handout. g. When the timer stops, the activity is done and the boys will form a circle and walk in place as you wrap up the activity. Note: The goal is not to get all completed, but complete as many as they can before time runs out. Add a Challenge: Incorporate a bit of competition by challenging the boys to see how many feelings they can complete in the allotted time. fitclub 4Boys! Session 1 fit & the fit Connection 12

Session 1 - Lesson 3 - MOOD Focus Do the Activity 1. Hand out the Feelings Put Me In a MOOD handout to each boy. 2. Set a timer for 2-3 minutes. 3. Start the timer and say Go for the boys to begin matching the MOOD Leader Cards with their handout. 4. When the time is up, gather the boys back into a standing circle. 5. Tell the boys to walk in place while you ask the boys some MOOD questions. 6. Ask questions such as: a. How does being bored lead you to make an unhealthy choice? b. How does feeling tired lead you to make an unhealthy choice? c. How does your MOOD influence you to make unhealthy choices? Wrap it Up! Message Check if you know fit 1. ASK: What does MOOD influence in your day? 2. ANSWER: The choices I make. Remember to be fit MOOD influences the choices you make in your day. Be fit When you get home from school today, stop and think. o How is your MOOD at the moment telling you what to eat? o How is your MOOD at the moment telling you to MOVE or not MOVE? Cue for Next Activity: Now that we learned about MOOD and how it influences our choices, let s choose to MOVE. Lesson 4 Fitness Challenge Time 5 Minutes Activity Purpose This activity introduces: The fit component of MOVE and its role in fit. The importance of moving every day to be fit. Objectives In this activity boys will gain an understanding of: MOVE being great for your body and mind. The role of MOVE in fit. The importance of moving in your day. Materials Needed CD player or other technology to play music (optional) Fun, energetic music (optional) MOVE Leader Cards MOVE Leader Cue Card Lesson 4 Talk Time! and Wrap it Up! Message Notes (page 29) Prepare the Activity If using music, have the player and music needed for this activity accessible and ready to play. fitclub 4Boys! Session 1 fit & the fit Connection 14

Session 1 - Lesson 4 - MOVE Focus Fitness Challenge Introduce the Activity Have boys continue to stand in a circle and walk in place. 1. Explain that this activity will help the boys learn about fun ways to MOVE. 2. Give the boys the directions for the upcoming activity. a. A boy will draw a MOVE Leader Card. b. Everyone will do the movement on the Leader Card for the number of times indicated on the Leader Card. You will demonstrate the movement before they start doing the movement that is on the MOVE Leader Card. c. If a boy draws a You Choose Leader Card, he can choose the movement for the group. Do the Activity 1. Walk to one boy and ask him to draw a MOVE Leader Card from your hand. 2. Retrieve the Leader Card. Show the group the move on the Leader Card. 3. Tell the boys what movement they will do and how many times they will do the movement based on the number on the Leader Card. 4. Demonstrate the movement. 5. All the boys will then do the movement on the Leader Card for the repetitions or time indicated on the Leader Card. 6. Once finished with the movement they will continue to walk in place. 7. Pick another boy and ask him to draw a MOVE Leader Card. 8. Continue this until the allotted time is up. Note: Not all boys will get a chance to draw a Leader Card. fitclub 4Boys! Session 1 - Lesson 4 - MOVE Focus Wrap it Up! Message Check if you know fit 1. ASK: Why should you find time to MOVE in your day? 2. ANSWER: Moving is good for your body and mind. Remember to be fit Moving is great for the body and mind. MOVE your body. Be fit After school do 5 fit moves. Overhead Cue for Next Activity: Our body and brain need fuel to MOVE and think. Let s learn how FOOD is fuel for our body and brain. Get in a circle and complete 5 Reaches before we learn about our next activity. fitclub 4Boys! Session 1 fit & the fit Connection 16

Lesson 5 Simon Eats Time 5 Minutes Activity Purpose This activity introduces: The fit component of FOOD and its role in fit. The importance of FOOD being fuel for our body and brain. The stoplight as a tool to make FOOD choices (red, yellow, green light concept). Objectives In this activity boys will gain an understanding of: FOOD is fuel for our body and mind. The role of FOOD in fit. The importance of thinking about what FOOD choices we make every day. Some foods are healthier for us than others. Choose healthy foods to eat. Materials Needed FOOD Leader Cards FOOD Leader Cue Card Lesson 5 Talk Time! and Wrap it Up! Message Notes (page 30) fitclub 4Boys! Session 1 fit & the fit Connection 17

Session 1 - Lesson 5 - FOOD Focus Simon Eats Introduce the Activity Have boys continue to stand in a circle and walk in place as you explain the next activity. 1. Explain that this activity will help the boys learn about the fit component of FOOD. 2. Give the boys the directions for the upcoming activity. a. This activity is similar to the game Simon Says. b. You, the leader, will draw a FOOD Leader Card and say, Simon is eating (Name on FOOD Leader Card). The boys must quickly decide if they think Simon is eating a healthy or unhealthy food. If a boy thinks Simon s food choice is a healthy one, green light food, he is to run in place as fast as he can. If a boy thinks Simon s food choice is an eat not so often, yellow light food, he is to stand still. If a boy thinks the food choice is an unhealthy choice, red light food, he is to sit down on the floor. c. Discuss why the food is or is not a healthy choice. Note: Use Leader Prompts to help explain why foods are a specific color. d. Repeat steps 2-3 until allotted time is up. Do the Activity 1. Draw a FOOD Leader Card and say, Simon is eating (Name of food on FOOD Leader Card). 2. Boys will either run in place (healthy choice), stand still (eat not so often) or sit down (unhealthy choice) depending on if they think Simon s food choice is healthy or unhealthy. 3. Use the Leader Prompts on the Leader Cards to discuss with the boys why the food is a red, yellow, or green food choice. a. Green light foods are Go foods: Eat a bunch great fuel for your body. b. Yellow light foods are Whoa foods: Just a little a little/not often foods. c. Red light foods are Stop foods: Not so much stop and think before you eat. 4. Session 1 - Lesson 5 - FOOD Focus Wrap it Up! Message Check if you know fit 1. ASK: You are responsible for making yourself a snack after school. What should you choose? 2. ANSWER: Any of the healthy FOOD choices (green light foods). Remember to be fit FOOD is fuel for your body and mind. Be fit Next time your sweet tooth starts talking, reach for fruit. energy, Cue for Next Activity: FOOD gives us energy to MOVE and think. Let s check out how RECHARGE gives us too. Time 5 Minutes Lesson 6 Cool-down to RECHARGE Your Body & Brain Activity Purpose This activity introduces: The fit component of RECHARGE and its role in fit. RECHARGE as an important influencer in the choices we make in our day. Two ways to RECHARGE that will be discussed throughout fitclub 4Boys: 1. Sleep to restore your RECHARGE. 2. Relax to refresh your RECHARGE; do a quiet, relaxing activity. Objectives In this activity boys will gain an understanding of: RECHARGE is needed to have energy in your day. Your RECHARGE (energy level) influences the choices you make in a day. Just like a battery you need to RECHARGE. Two ways you can RECHARGE: 1. Sleep to restore your RECHARGE at night. 2. Relax to refresh your RECHARGE during the day; do a quiet, relaxing activity. Session 1 - Lesson 6 - RECHARGE Focus Cool-down to RECHARGE Your Body and Brain Introduce the Activity Ask the boys to sit in a large circle and provide an arm length between each other to allow enough room for stretching. 1. Explain that this activity will help the boys learn about the importance of a cool-down to RECHARGE their body and brain. 2. Give the boys the directions for the upcoming activity. a. You will stand in the center of the circle and tell the boys: They are going to do some breathing and stretching to RECHARGE their energy. Three boys will draw a RECHARGE Leader Card. After the Leader Cards are drawn, you will lead the boys in doing each movement shown on the RECHARGE Leader Card. b. Ask the boys to continue doing the three RECHARGE movements at their own pace while you review the Talk Time! lesson points. Do the Activity 1. Have the boys close their eyes and take 3 deep breaths. a. This will allow them to calm down after the previous activity and concentrate on the RECHARGE activity. 2. Choose three participants and have each draw one RECHARGE Leader Card. 3. Demonstrate how to do the movement on each Leader Card. 4. The boys do the three RECHARGE movements as they desire while you, the leader, review the Talk Time! lesson points. 5. If time allows, this would be a great opportunity to also read the RECHARGE fit tips on the Leader Cards and use the Leader Prompt to explain the reason the fit tip matters. fitclub 4Boys! Lesson 7 Closing Time 5 Minutes Activity Purpose This activity provides a time to recap the main fit messages introduced during fitclub 4Boys and to challenge the boys to make one fit choice throughout the next week. This activity will also allow the leader to gain an awareness of what the boys have learned in fitclub 4Boys during this session with the use of the My fit Thoughts worksheet. This activity introduces: o Challenging the boys to make a fit choice every day in the coming week. Objectives In this activity boys will gain further understanding of: fit s four components RECHARGE, MOOD, FOOD and MOVE. fit is about making healthy choices. Being fit is about having the motivation and energy to make healthy choices to eat well and move throughout your day. In this activity boys will gain an understanding of: How to do the fit-huddle. Tell the boys you want to know their thoughts about fitclub today. 4. You will be giving them a My fit Thoughts paper to fill out and return to you. 5. You will read the questions and they can write their answers. 6. Hand out the My fit Thoughts for each boy to complete. a. Read the questions to the boys: What fit piece did you like learning about today? o Participants will circle their answer (RECHARGE, MOOD, FOOD or MOVE) Write down one thing you learned about the fit piece you circled in question #1. Write down one fit thing you plan on doing this week. How easy or difficult do you think it will be to complete the one fit thing from question #3 this week? o Participants will circle their answer (Super Easy, Easy, Doable, Hard Really Hard) b. Allow 2 minutes for the boys to complete the My fit Thoughts paper. c. When the boys are finished, ask them to return their completed My fit Thoughts paper to you. After the boys turn in their My fit Thoughts paper, have the boys draw a fit Challenge Card from the fit Challenge Card deck. 2. Explain to the boys that the fit Challenge Card is meant to be taken home and used throughout the week to challenge them to make a fit choice every day. 3. Show the boys where the fit challenge is on the card. 4. If they do the fit challenge on the card during the day, they can mark the day s box with an X. 5. Tell the boys to keep their fit Challenge Card in a place where they will see it each day. This will help remind them to do their challenge. Handout 1.
