STUDYING IN OXFORD LAW IN OXFORD Living in Oxford Oxford is one of the world s most beautiful cities, with an abundance of historic buildings. With over 30,000 students, Oxford is not only a centre of education and learning but it is also a rich cultural hub with a wealth of cinemas, theatres and museums, exceeding many other cities of its size. Oxford has a culturally diverse population and consequently offers multiple dining opportunities as well as bars, clubs and English pubs famous for their legendary customers including J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. Performances of live music range from classical concerts at the intimate Holywell Music Room to jazz, reggae, rock and indie at venues such as the O2 Academy on Cowley Road. Famous bands, such as Radiohead and Foals, started their careers in Oxford. Oxford has over 50 parks, meadows and nature reserves to discover, as well as Britain s oldest botanic garden ideal spots for a quiet walk or picnic with friends. Of course, your time in Oxford wouldn t be complete without spending a summer afternoon rowing or punting on the river. Oxford is a centre for debate on a wide range of law topics, with conferences, seminars and forums taking place within the universities, the city of Oxford and nearby London. In addition to our own excellent libraries and resource centres, Oxford Brookes also offers you access to the worldrenowned Bodleian Law Library. Research Seminars The School of Law runs an established research seminar series where academics, policy makers and practitioners present their ideas. Oxford Brookes also offers a full calendar of guest lectures across a wide spectrum of interests. Law Society There is a lively Student Law Society to widen your interests and introduce aspects of law not covered formally. Examples of events hosted by the Law Society include: Wine Tasting Annual Christmas Ball Talks from leading lawyers Visits to the Old Bailey and Royal Courts of Justice 6 7

REF 2014 "The grounding that I now have in international law has allowed me to take on work that I would not previously have been qualified for. For example, I am currently developing a programme of litigation on the issue of counter-terrorism and human rights for an international organisation." LLM Alumnus Richard Carver, Associate Lecturer and Human Rights Consultant 12 13

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS AND FUNDING SOURCES Entry requirements You will normally have, or be predicted to have a good honours degree, or an equivalent degree awarded by a university outside the United Kingdom. The degree may be in Law or in a related discipline. We welcome applications from both non-law graduates and work experiencebased candidates. If you are new to the academic study of law you will be advised to read a number of recommended texts by way of induction before the course begins. You are also encouraged to attend the induction sessions provided in the week prior to the beginning of the course. If your first language is not English, proof of language skills must be presented. This could be English Language GCSE or O-level, or an IELTS score of 6.5 (with 6.0 in reading and writing). For more information visit www.brookes.ac.uk/international How to apply Please apply through UCAS Postgraduate Funding Oxford Brookes graduates are eligible for a 10% discount on postgraduate tuition fees The UK government offer postgraduate loans to all eligible UK/EU students Visit our website for details of scholarships, bursaries and other funding sources. www.brookes.ac.uk/studying/finance 10% Discount to Oxford Brookes Alumni After a varied and interesting career, including service with the Foreign Legion, Metropolitan Police, New Scotland Yard and the New Zealand police force, Jason decided to add academic credentials to his interest in Human Rights. And now, working with UNICEF, Jason reflects on his time at Oxford Brookes. I ve always had an interest in human rights. I had no idea what that meant, but there was an interest. I didn t understand why so many people were so against human rights and I could not understand how governments could argue about human rights. And so when I read about this course, it seemed to answer these questions. And that was the key; the course encouraged me to think about and find the answers and ask other questions that I hadn t thought of before. The course was presented in a straightforward way and for a mature student, busy with life and a career, this made the process so much easier. The expectations were clear, the content looked interesting; interesting enough to want to commit to hours of reading towards, and I still want to read about it now! Having LLM after your name does make you stand out from the crowd. For my dissertation I wrote about the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which I think helped me land a job here at UNICEF. That flexibility with the choice of dissertation helped me into my new career. Brookes reputation as a good, solid University helps very much in the job market. Jason Howard LLM International Human Rights Law alumnus 14 15
