Requirements of ED STIC in terms of training Divided into two categories: The scientific education aims at increasing PhD students depth and breadth of knowledge in their discipline. The professional education is more specifically dedicated to prepare to professional development. Requirements: 100h for the thesis, divided in: 50h scientific education (formation scientifique) 50h professional education (formation transverse) 3
General rules and exceptions General rules (see ED STIC web page for a complete description): diversification of professional education for a given competence : not more than 25h; for ex. for all language lectures at most 25h period in priority during 2 first years of the thesis Adjusting is possible but not systematic: PhD realised under CIFRE contract or in a company: partial dispensation possible for professional education ; Co-tutelle: volume proportional to the length of the stay in France. 4
Examples of scientific education Master 2 lectures: the content related to the thesis or scientific openmindedness «advanced» level priority for Masters of Paris-Saclay Thematic summer/spring/autumn/winter schools discuss the choice with your supervisor Scientific thematic tutorials of advanced level Thematic seminars, ex. Conter-examples Bachelor (Licence, L3) level courses, Seminars or working groups proper to your group or your laboratory, Conferences and workshops attendance, even as a speaker Online courses (Coursera etc.), MOOCs (other than proposed by ED STIC). 6

Conter-examples Organization of seminars, working groups, doctoral days or laboratory days or other events of the kind Managing the team website or conference website, resource or publications management Attendance, even as an animator, to events like «La fête de la science», «Bouge la science», «Salon des jeux mathématiques», «La nuit de l info», «L arbre du savoir»... Reviewing scientific papers Course / Training without meaningful impact (eg basic training in office tools, MS-Word, MS -Excel, etc.). 8
