Ranger Review Dufur Elementar y and Dufur High School April 2015 12th Annual Volume 21, Issue 8 Spring has sprung and that means its time for the 12th Annual Walk-A-Thon! The Dufur Academic Enrichment and Improvement Committee will hold the Walk-A-Thon on Thursday, April 23 rd from 12:30 pm to 2:45 pm at the Dufur City Park. The first Walk-A-Thon helped raise money to purchase the much needed play structure and swings on the elementary playground. Eleven years later and this event is still a viable option for the school as it continues today to raise money to be used to enrich or improve academics in the elementary classrooms. Money raised will be used to purchase more ipads again this year. This is such a fun event for students and everyone involved and there s the extra benefit of an afternoon of exercise! Kindergarten through 8 th grade students will be asking family and friends to sponsor them with a flat donation or a per lap donation. On the day of the event they will walk as many laps as they can around the road in the park. Family members are welcome to join their children during this enjoyable event. If so, thank you! Many life-saving medical treatments require a safe and reliable blood supply, and your contribution will help many people. This year we collected 36 pints of blood. Library News Read Across America Thank you to our volunteer readers Robert Wallace, Randi Wallace, Rita Squires and Patricia Pfenning for reading to the classes during Read Across America. Also, thank you to Friends of Dufur School for supplying the wonderful cupcakes decorated for Dr. Seuss birthday. Every student received a cupcake for lunch that day. National Library Week National Library Week will be celebrated April 6 th 10th. Our theme will be the Hospital. Four sites will be set-up in the library: #1 Examining Room, the students will play a matching game that has the students match the symptom with the ailment, #2 Emergency Room, they will take turns being the patient and the Dr., #3 Radiology, the students will create a human skeleton using X-RAYS and the last, #4, will be an Operating Room where the students will be playing the operation game. The highlight will be our annual reading contest with prizes for the top reader in each class and an overall winner. Summer Reading Program Plans for the summer reading program are being made. We are looking forward to a busy summer of reading, crafts and activities every Thursday at 11:00 am, starting June 19 th and ending on July 30 th. Watch the calendar for further information. Oregon Battle of the Books Dufur School was represented in the Oregon Battle of the Books regional competition at the 3 rd 5 th grade and the 6 th 8 th grade levels. Both teams performed excellent in their divisions with the 6 th 8 th grade team placing 2 nd. Congratulations to Landon Ellis, Paul Kelly, Paityn DeCeasar, Maddelynn Tierney, Gavin Magill, Reghan Smith, Maddy Smith and Mikayla Kelly for a well fought battle! Page 2 Ranger Review

Ranger Math & Literature Program 1-4 Ranger Ready Logic Here is a two-person game of logic. Place 2 beans or markers in the top row, 3 beans in the 2 nd row, 4 beans in the 3 rd row, and 5 beans in the 4 th row. Now, take turns removing as many beans as you choose from any ONE row. If you are left with the last bean, you lose! Volume 21, Issue 8 Page 3

MCMC Hospital Land The first grade class took a field trip last month to Mid-Columbia Medical Center s Hospital Land. This program is a playful way to help small children with the hospital experience. They see what its like from both sides of a hospital stay; as a doctor or nurse and as the patient. 2015 Middle School Track Schedule DATE: OPPONENT: PLACE: TIME: Friday, April 3 Sherman Moro 12:00 pm Tuesday, April 14 Glenwood Glenwood 4:00 pm Monday, April 20 White Salmon White Salmon 4:00 pm Tuesday, April 28 Glenwood Glenwood 4:00 pm Friday, May 1 Arlington Arlington 12:00 pm Head Coach: Holly Ryan

Please be careful and slow down when driving in and out of the school zone area. We have many little students walking to and from school every day.
