In this orientation packet, there is useful information to assist both parents and students in preparing for high school. You will find important dates to put on your calendar, a sample freshman program to help you and your student select courses, and information about course offerings in each subject area. The complete listing of courses, including descriptions and prerequisites, is in the Program of Studies on the Irvine High School website at http://irvinehigh.org. In the Program of Studies, you will find information on our school-wide programs including: counseling, Link Crew, the Life Center, the library, academic policies, grading procedures, the college preparatory and honors programs, and requirements for graduation. The last pages are important forms that you will need to complete for registration and course enrollment: Course request form, Athletics form, and the Student Health Inventory form. Each student must bring these completed forms to his or her enrollment appointment on May 5th or 6th. On Thursday, August 26th, in our game gym the Irvine High School Link Crew will be hosting an orientation from 8:30 a.m. to approximately 1:30 p.m. for all incoming freshmen. Please be sure to have your student attend this event. Lunch will be served! Freshmen will learn how to get connected to school, meet new people, and come to understand the Vaquero Way. The morning will include a tour of the campus. Each freshman will meet his/her Link Leader who will guide them through the first year of high school. Your student will be receiving communication from a Link Leader prior to August 26th. We look forward to developing a four year partnership with you and your student. P AGE 2 Course Enrollment takes place at Irvine High School Academic course enrollment is based on 8th grade teacher recommendations, as well as the student s standardized test scores. Course enrollment will take place by appointment at Irvine High School on May 5th and 6th. We hope that parents are able to attend their son or daughter s 9th grade enrollment appointment. However if a parent is unable to attend, the student should keep his or her appointment to meet with their High School Teacher Advisor and enroll for next year s classes. In selecting classes, you are creating a contract with the school committing to the courses you request. Changes to these requests will only be allowed for reasons as listed on the Course Contract which will be completed during the enrollment conference at Irvine High School. Final Summer Packet All Irvine High School students receive a final summer registration packet in August. Included in this packet will be the freshmen registration dates and important forms to complete. Bell Schedule and Block System The Irvine High School Bell Schedule and Block System are unique. Irvine High School has four periods per day and each period is 90 minutes long. The daily bell schedule is as follows: 8:00 AM 9:30 AM First Period 9:35 AM 9:45 AM Teacher Advisement TA meets 3 times weekly on M, W & F 10:00 AM 11:30 AM Second Period 11:30 AM 12:10 PM Lunch 12:15 PM 1:45 PM Third Period 1:55 PM 3:25 PM Fourth Period Tutorial - Tutorial is available 2 times weekly on T & Th The school day is organized into four ninety-minute blocks. Students have the opportunity to take some classes in solid blocks and others in alternating blocks. Solid block classes meet every day for a semester, earning 10 credits. Alternating block classes meet every other day for a semester and earn 5 credits. The academic year is comprised of two semesters. For example, students may be enrolled in English and Foreign Language in one semester and be enrolled in Social Science and Math in the other. A full academic load requires students to be enrolled in a minimum of three blocks each day. One or two additional blocks may be available for enrichment, additional electives, or athletics. Sample Freshmen Program See the sample schedule below. There are two semesters each year. Each semester is divided into A days and B days. Solid block classes meet on A and B days. Alternating block classes meet on either A or B days. Alternating block classes are worth 5 credits; solid block classes are worth 10 credits. With the exception of seniors, students must be enrolled in a minimum of 30 credits per semester. IRVINE HIGH SCHOOL P AGE 3 Sequence of Courses There are a variety of options for 9th grade students. Academic course enrollment is based on the student s 8th grade teacher recommendations and standardized test scores. The flow charts show the possible sequences of courses that students take in each subject area during their four years of high school. Also included are the minimum requirements for high school graduation in each subject area. Parents and students should consult the Program of Studies for course descriptions and prerequisites. English and English Language Development (ELD) The minimum requirements for high school graduation include completion of four years of English and passing the California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE) in language arts and mathematics. Students planning for enrollment in a four-year college or university are to complete four years of College Preparatory English. Students who are English Language Learners are enrolled in English Language Development and Sheltered courses based on the results of CELDT and Stanford Reading assessment scores in reading and writing skills. College Preparatory Sequence Criteria: For students who score at or above grade level on the CAT 6 test. ECL World Lit & Comp American Lit & Comp British Lit & Comp Honors Sequence Criteria: For students who scored in the 85%ile or higher in both Reading and Language on the 7th grade CAT 6 test, or a score of 5 in English Language Arts (ELA) on the California Standards Test, and who have excellent study habits. H American Lit & Comp ** H British Lit & Comp AP English Language AP English Lit High School Graduation English Sequence Criteria: For students reading two years below grade level based on the CAT 6 test. English Essentials I ** English Essentials II English Elective English Elective ELD Sequence English Electives: Beginning Journalism Speech & Debate ELD II / ELA 1 (SH) ELD III High School Graduation Sequence or College Prep.Sequence Mathematics The minimum requirements for high school graduation include: completion of Algebra 1, a minimum of 20 credits in mathematics, and passing the California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE) in mathematics and language arts. College Preparatory Math Sequence (Minimum 3 years. Must include Algebra 2) Preparing students for most four year colleges and universities Criteria: For students who complete 8th grade Pre-Algebra with an A or B or Math 8 with an A and pass the Algebra Readiness Test*; also students who receive a grade of C in Algebra 1 in 8th grade. *Not all Middle Schools administer the Algebra Readiness Test. Algebra 1 Geometry Algebra 2 College Algebra Criteria: For students who receive a grade of B in Algebra 1 in 8th grade. Geometry Algebra 2 College Algebra Honors Math Sequence College Preparatory sequence preparing students for selective universities. Criteria: For students who complete 8th grade Algebra with a A or better H Geometry H Algebra 2/Trig H Pre Calculus Calculus and / or AP Statistics High School Graduation Math Sequence This prepares students to meet the minimum high school graduation requirements. A minimum of 20 credits in math, including 10 credits of Algebra, is required for graduation. Algebra 1AB/CD (Solid Block for two semesters) -or- Basic Algebra AB/CD (Alternating Block for two years non-college Prep)

P AGE 4 Science The minimum requirements for high school graduation include completion of two years of science. Students planning for enrollment in a four year college or university should complete a minimum of three years of science. Students planning on a major of science or math are recommended to complete four or more science courses. There are a variety of elective courses available to students who have completed the required science sequence; please consult the Program of Studies for course descriptions and prerequisites. College Preparatory and Honors Science Sequence Criteria: Students concurrently enrolled in Algebra I or Algebra 1AB/CD must take Geophysical Science. Students who have completed or are concurrently enrolled in Geometry may take Biology. This yearlong academic elective is strongly recommended for eligible students. Students opting to not take Biology must take Geophysical Science A/B. Geophysical Science (9th Grade) Biology Chemistry Physics Or Biology (9th Grade) Chemistry Physics/AP Bio/AP Chem/Advanced Pre-Med I & II AP Physics/AP Bio/AP Chem/Advanced Pre-Med I & II High School Graduation Science Sequence Geophysical Science (9th Grade) Life Science (10th grade) Consumer Chemistry (Exceptions to the above sequence may be recommended for English Language Learners.) Foreign Language Electives Foreign language is recommended for students who earn C or better grade in English and who already have developed good study habits. Admission to a University of California or California State University campus requires a minimum completion of two years of the same language. Completion of three or four years of a language is recommended. Course enrollment is based on the student s 8th grade English or Foreign Language teacher recommendation and grade. Ninth grade students who have room in their schedule, and who are planning to attend a four year college or university, may enroll in Global Studies, a college preparatory elective. There are a variety of elective courses available for students after 9th grade, including: AP European History, Psychology, Adult Living and Honors Comparative Religions. Sheltered courses are available for English Language Learners. College Preparatory All students may enroll in Global Studies, except those qualified for Honors Modern World History. Global Studies is not required. Global Studies Modern World History US History Political Economy Honors Sequence Criteria: For students who score at the 85%ile or above in both Reading and Language on the 7th grade CAT 6 test or a 5 in ELA on the CST (see guidelines for English, previous page. Students must also possess excellent study habits and organizational skills. For information. Dance Ensemble This class is open to all students through competitive tryouts. Dance Ensemble clinics will be held April 26th-29th, Monday Thursday from 3:30-5:00 pm. Auditions for Dance Ensemble and Intermediate Dance will be on May 1st at 10:00am. (all in the Dance Room). Students will be taught a routine and audition two at a time. Non-athletes will take Frosh PE in the Fall and Spring semesters. PE classes are Alternating Blockclasses. Athletes in Fall sports must register for that sport and Frosh PE for Spring. Athletes in Spring sports must register for that sport and Frosh PE in Fall. Athletes interested in trying out for team sports must register for Frosh PE in Fall and Spring. Schedule changes for athletes will be made when the team rosters are finalized. Course Worksheet P AGE 7 PLEASE NOTE: Placement in English, math, science, social science, and foreign language is determined by the middle school recommendations (which you will receive in the mail before conference time) and CST test scores. All freshmen are required to be enrolled in physical education or a team sport for the entire year. Instructions: In the REQUIRED COURSES section, enter recommendations made by middle school teachers. In the ELECTIVE COURSES section, enter your elective choices in the order of priority and provide alternatives, in the event that original choices are not available. Enter number of credits in the credit column for both required and elective courses (see page 6). Add Required Courses credits to Elective Courses credits for total number of credits. An 80 credit exception is allowed for students enrolled in any TWO of the following: 1) semester-long team sports or 2) year-long performing arts. Students who are taking French 1 and 2 or Korean 1 and 2 in the same year may also enroll in more than 70 credits. Students with an open period in their schedule during first, second, or third period will be assigned a homework lab. Homework lab is a study hall and earns no course credit. P AGE 8 ANSWERS TO FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS I m taking a class in summer school. Will I need to change my fall schedule? Possibly. Students who successfully complete a prerequisite course in summer school will have their schedules updated at the completion of summer school. Students taking summer school at another campus will have an opportunity to request a change in their fall schedule during the week of summer registration. Can I request a course change in my schedule? Students and parents are asked to make course selections carefully. The requests you submit are considered a contract with the school. Changes will be made on a limited basis during the registration process in August-September. The California Inter-Scholastic Federation (CIF) directs and coordinates such competition, and all participating schools comply with its rules and regulations. A student who joins an athletic team is generally scheduled into one period of athletics during the school day. In addition to this period, the student is required to practice before or after school with the team, and to attend all scheduled events during the team s competitive season. Requirements for Participation 1. Have a C grade point average and earn at least 20 credits in new work during the quarter proceeding participation. (Only 5 of the 20 credits may be P.E. or Athletics) 2. You must have a physical examination, Emergency card, and a signed Athletic code on file at IHS. 3. Once an athlete makes a team, there is an ATHLETIC FEE of $245.00 each year per athlete. 4. Be successful in the team s tryout procedures. Athletic Pre-participation Screenings will be given early in June for $25.00. Proceeds go to IHS athletic fund. A recent physical is required prior to competition.
