Students conduct a chronological overview of the major periods of world art with an emphasis on culture. They develop a time-line to associate major periods of art with significant historical events, crafts, and/or architectural achievements of various cultures. In the second semester, students compare major works of art in terms of a central theme or image. The role of the artist in society and the effect of political or technological influences are discussed. photography The photography program at Whitman boasts one of the last remaining wet darkrooms in MCPS where students can hone their skills in the time honored tradition of film photography. It all starts with Photo 1, an introductory course where students will learn how to use a film camera, develop their own negatives then print them in our darkroom. Film, chemicals and photo paper are included in the course but students must have their own single lens reflex camera. As students progress through the program we begin to dabble in digital photography but the heart of the program will always be based in film. For questions feel free to contact Mr. Seymour.

drawing + painting + printmaking studio art Studio 1 Studio 2 Studio 1: Students create original drawings and paintings utilizing an in-depth exploration of the elements of art and principles of design. Studio 2: Students concentrate on developing a personal style which focuses on realism, abstraction, and nonobjective styles. Studio 3: Students concentrate on making original artworks using both assigned and self-directed subject matter. Students participate in group critiques and present their work in a portfolio. Art History and museum field trips are incorporated into the curriculum. Advanced Placement, Studio Art: The AP Studio Art courses are designed for the highly motivated and able students who are seriously interested in the practical experience of art. The AP Studio Art program follows national standards for performance in the visual arts.
