(Provided to you at Preview.) COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is designed to assist your transition into the University of Florida Heavener School of Business. The Warrington Welcome First-Year Florida program will emphasize the development of academic and personal skills supporting success in the Warrington College of Business Administration, as well as familiarize you with campus resources. Active participation in learning, including openly discussing student issues, will help you make the most of this experience. COURSE OBJECTIVES Warrington Welcome First-Year Florida connects students to key resources at the University of Florida: a faculty/staff member who is committed to first-year student success; an undergraduate peer leader who is experienced in the challenges of making a successful transition from high

school to college; and your peers. Specific objectives for students include the development of 1) skills for academic and personal success, 2) an appreciation for and commitment to being a part of a diverse learning community, 3) the personal, social, emotional, and intellectual skills necessary for involvement in leadership and service throughout the student s career in the university community, and 4) acclimation to the Warrington College of Business and connection with the College and its specific available resources. In WW, you will develop and implement a personal strategic plan that will help you reach your goals of earning a degree and launching a successful career. Your strategic plan will involve the following steps: 1) assessment, 2) exploration, and 3) experimentation. Emailing, accessing the internet, and working on matters unrelated to the work at hand are inappropriate behaviors because they are disrespectful and distracting to the class and to the instructor. GRADING/EVALUATION METHODS OF SUCCESSFUL LEARNING More important than earning a grade in this course is actually learning something. You will find this to be true of all your college courses. Getting the most out of this course will require a time commitment of two to three hours outside of class per week. Many of the written assignments in this course ask students to reflect on their college experiences or expectations, and students benefit from devoting time to these assignments. Students also benefit from being active participants in classroom discussions and activities. Grades will be based on the scale below with a total of 100 points possible. Attendance & Participation Assignments (5) 30 2 pts per class meeting (13 total) 4 points earned for extra effort/participation) 25 5 pts per assignment Group Presentation 15 Resume 15 (5pts for 1 st draft/10pts final draft) Community Service 15 (10 pts participation/5 points reaction paper) ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION (30 POINTS) Students are expected to be punctual in class attendance and remain in the classroom for the entire class session, as they would in any business appointment, unless an urgent need arises or prior arrangements have been made with the instructor. Two tardy attendances (5 minutes late or more) will result in one absence. Students are expected to arrive for class prepared to meet classroom obligations and to devote full attention and commitment to the work of that class. Classroom discussion is an important part of the pedagogy of this course. Students in Warrington Welcome should be fully prepared to engage in class discussion, and they should use the opportunity to develop positive and professional communication skills. This includes according respect for differing perspectives and contributions to discussion, as well as building on the base for discussion laid by student colleagues and the instructor. Excused absences include: Religious Holidays: Religious holidays are always excused; however, please notify the instructors, in writing, within the first two weeks of class so that appropriate accommodations may be made. Medical Emergencies: Medical emergencies are excused with appropriate documentation from a health care provider. Family Emergencies: These emergencies are only excused with written documentation. 3

ASSIGNMENTS (25 POINTS) Assignments must be turned in to the instructor(s) either during class as a hard copy or via the Sakai website prior to class as a Microsoft Word Document or pdf. Assignments should have the assignment name and student name at the top (within the document), and use Times New Roman 12 pt. font, one and a half inch spacing, and 1 inch margins. With the exception of assignments which are due during the class period as a hard copy, all assignments should be submitted online as an attachment by 10:40 AM on the due date. Assignments submitted after this time will be considered late. LATE ASSIGNMENTS will automatically have 1/2 a point deducted. Each assignment should be named as follows lastname_assignmentname.doc (e.g., Little_resume.doc ). Points will be deducted from assignments for not following directions as specified in the assignments. Detailed instructions for each assignment can be found on the Sakai course website. The five (5) assignments are as follows (in order of due date): StrenghsQuest, Resume, Personal Branding, Degree Audit Activity, Wandering Strategy and Journal (a series of 10 journal topics). Assignment 1 StrengthsQuest a code that is specific to you will be emailed on Wednesday for you to complete the assessment. Assignment 2 Personal Branding handout and activity to create your personal mission Assignment 3 Degree Audit Activity will be done in class on September 23 rd Assignment 4 Wandering Strategies Due December 2 nd h in class as a poster session mini-presentation Assignment 5 Journal (10 entries minimum) and presentation of these journals (there will be a midpoint check to ensure you are working on this assignment during the semester.) IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO REVIEW SPECIFIC ASSIGNMENT REQUIREMENTS AND FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS GROUP PRESENTATION (15 POINTS) ETHICS COMPETITION Working in the context of groups and teams is an important managerial skill that is fostered in business programs. Students should treat their responsibilities to team appointments and team work as they would treat professional business obligations. Learning in the context of groups and teams also involves academic integrity. Team members are jointly responsible for the academic honesty and integrity of team work. They are obliged to participate in the work and learning process of the team so that they do not take academic credit for projects and assignments to which they have not made a fair and proportionate contribution. Students will be divided into five groups during the first class period. ENACTUS (a business student organization) will visit our class and present a Case Study on Ethics. You and your teammates will create a presentation based on ethical decision-making and present it to a panel of independent judges. The case will be released in class on October 7 th and the finals of the competition will take place on October 29th FROM 5:00pm-9:00pm (You may only need to be present for a portion of this time.) COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT (15 POINTS) Students are expected to participate in the class service project and reflect on their experience. You will submit a 1-page paper detailing this experience. Detailed instructions for the service project reflection paper can be found on the Sakai course website. READINGS COLLEGE SUCCESS STRATEGIES - It is recommended that you read the whole College Success Strategies text as it contains many topics that we will not cover in Warrington Welcome, but may be valuable to you during your college experience. This book is a GREAT resource to utilize like a phonebook for UF places to go and offices to visit about any issues/concerns/etc. Use it as a quick reference guide for your time at UF! 4
