New Jersey Association of Student Councils Issue 4 October 2008 Inside this issue: Welcome 2 Nationals 3-4 LTC 5-6 Coming Up... 7 Be sure to visit www.njasc.org!

Welcome back... I hope everyone had a wonderful summer, I know the 2008 board did! In the next few pages, you ll find out what the NJASC has been up to this summer, beginning with out journey to Fort Worth, Texas for NASC Nationals and ending with the 53rd annual LTC, right here in New Jersey! The board was able to meet a lot of people from every state while we were in Texas, and we also got to meet a lot of you at LTC - I guess you could say that our summer has been pretty ideal. Also in this issue, you will find out more about this year s State Charity, Parents of Autistic Children (POAC). Don t forget that all information about the NJASC can be found at www.njasc.org. Pictures from LTC, all of our forms, and all past editions of the can also be found on the website! Page 2

Nationals 2008 This summer, all of the NJASC executive board flew to Fort Worth, Texas with many other leaders from the best state - New Jersey! Before Nationals officially began, we met with kids from Pennsylvania at the South Fork Ranch (where the show Dallas was shot) and enjoyed an authentic Texas dinner for the first time, as well as our first hoedown. The next morning, we arrived at Northwest High School and were blown away by the amount of delegates there. The best part of the first day was trading pins with other states. Page 3

While in Texas, we: Got CPR lessons Went to NRH 2 0 (a local water park) Learned from Ken Walsh about the 2008 Presidential candidates Met people from other states at Billy Bob s Had fun at Six Flags Over Texas Visited the historical Forth Worth Stockyards Had a host family dinner Enjoyed fireworks after the final candle lighting ceremonies Had a blast at Dave & Busters Page 4

Leadership Training Conference This past July, the TCNJ hosted the 53rd annual Leadership Training Conference (LTC). Leaders from all over New Jersey gathered together to learn valuable lessons in leadership, but they were definitely blown away by how much fun they had in the process. At LTC, delegates participated in the LTC Games, songfest, talent show, and skit night; making it the most memorable LTC yet. I would like to thank our Junior and Senior staff, who did a great job to make LTC a great experience for everyone; and all of our delegates, who really embraced all LTC had to offer. I would also like to encourage everyone in New Jersey to attend LTC or even just check it out online - remember, its on the website! Below are some of the things this year s delegates had to say about LTC. "LTC was amazing! When I came home it was so hard to describe to my family and friends because it was an experience you had to be there for. I ended up saying that I just fit in. Not one person felt left out or awkward mostly because we were all being awkward together. I will never forget the friendships I had and all the learning along the way. LTC was indescribable and I wish everyone could have that same experience of being part of something that truly changes your life." Genna Wallerstein J.P. Stevens High School "The short time that was spent at LTC, was an amazing experience. I cannot thank you enough for a great time. I made so many new friends, exchanged so many great ideas, and so much more! Thank you again for making this experience one that will never leave my heart." Deanna Cafone Nutley High School "LTC was a life changing experience. In four short days, I became apart of a family that I never will forget. The LTC environment gives an opportunity to meet new people from across their state, be free of judgement, and learn leadership skills that will last a lifetime. The feeling of LTC lasts long after the final songfest, and I can't wait to bring LTC to my school. If given the chance to attend LTC, take it! LTC has changed me to be a more confident person and a passionate leader. The friends I made, the memories we shared, and the experience we all fell in love with is one that I would not trade for anything." Shannon Cury Ocean City High School October 2008 Page 5
