Introduction to Keyboarding 11 This course is very much about skill development and improvement. The goals of the course are: personal goal setting and planning for success student keyboarding speed (and accuracy) improvement awareness of ergonomics skill development with word-processing and presentation software skill development business communication standards While there will be some assignments that are specifically business related, many of the final assignments can be completed in conjunction with projects you re doing elsewhere. Likewise, you can do the hand in the final 15 guides in any order you want, though as a class, we ll be following a set calendar. Finally, for your skill development and overall success and satisfaction you must practice consistently if you are to grow and improve your skills. We all know other THSS students who have not planned well, or at all, and they struggle come June. And while they may finish the course, they have let themselves down by not being the best they can be.

Learning Guide 1 Your Dreams and School Goals Getting to Know You I want to know why your taking this course, and more importantly, what excites you and gets you inspired. If we use ammeter athletics as a metaphor, I m like the coach who issues you a plan and tries to encourage you to be your best. Ultimately, it s only up to you if you succeed in meeting your goals (and dreams), I can only encourage. There will be three requirements in Learning Guides 1. 1. Completing an online Creative Survey (available on my website) 2. Developing and sharing with others (course teacher, TA, and parents) a 3 month plan for keyboarding skill development 3. A face to face meeting with your course teacher to go over your goals and to help you with your plan.

Learning Guide 2 Establishing a Baseline Score Your Keyboarding Plan Our text for keyboarding skill development section is: Ubelacker, Sandra. Mastering Keyboarding Skills 1. Second ed. Mississauga: Copp Clark Pittman, 1989. Print. Assignments Assignment 1 Baseline See your teacher and arrange for a 5 minute timed write. (We will probably be doing this in class, but if you miss that session ) Assignment 2 Develop a Skill-building Plan Meet with your teacher to develop your Personalized Plan. (This is the plan you will be evaluated for the entirety of Learning Guides 1 to 5.)

Once you have done the five-minute test, together we will establish your skill level, and together we will develop a training plan, Appendix 2, to meet your skill level goals you articulated in Learning Guide 1. The goal is to have this done by September 30. Assignment 3 Start your plan and meet the first performance objective.

Learning Guide 3 to 7 Speed Improvement Moving the Baseline to Your Goal Speed The goal for the next 3 guides of your plan (LG 3 to 5) is to meet the goals you set for yourself. If things go as planned, the skill building part of the course will be finished by the end of November. It is important to meet this target, as you may be moving on to other types of skill building. We will meet to evaluate your growth and performance prior to the first report card. There is a form, Appendix 2, which you will have to guide you in completing Learning Guides 3 to 5. The goal is to complete this section by the first report card.

Learning Guide 8 Space Bar Rules & Personal Letters Learn to format a personal letter written to a business Resources: Mastering Keyboarding Skills, 2nd Edition Cortez Peters Championship Keyboarding, Skillbuilding, & Applications Activities:

1. Carefully read the attached handout, Space Bar Rules. Pay particular attention to the examples. These rules will apply for the remainder of the course. 2. Complete the Space Bar assignment (Assignment 1.1) on the handout (See Mr. Scoular-pages 34-35). 3. Do a 5 minute timed write (Level 1) in Cortez Peters Championship Keyboarding, Skillbuilding, & Applications. 4. On page 214 of Mastering Keyboarding Skills, 2nd Edition you will find an example of a Personal Business Letter in the full block style with two point punctuation. Full block style means that all parts of the letter begin on the left margin. Two point punctuation means that you have a colon (:) after the salutation and a comma (,) after the complimentary closing. 5. Format the letter on page 214. 6. Complete the following personal business letters using the full block style with 2 point punctuation. Mastering Keyboarding page 216 Production 2 Mastering Keyboarding page 224 Production

Open punctuation means you omit the colon after the salutation and the comma after the complimentary closing. Now key a copy of the letter on the attached letter (page 291 Business of Keyboarding) substituting the current date for the date shown on the letter and placing your initials at the bottom on the initials line. Use the full block style shown with open punctuation. The initials indicate that Carol Gans wrote the letter and by placing your initials after hers, instead of yi you are indicating that you typed the letter. 4. Key the following letters using full block style want open punctuation: Business of Keyboarding, 2nd Edition, page 317 Assignment 8:6 Business of Keyboarding Assignment 8:7 Business of Keyboarding Assignment 8:8
