Preparing for Your Student(s) Schedule the initial meeting with the student for the purpose of discussing the following items. A checklist is provided in the form of a PDF document as a resource to help in this process.

Orientation Recommendations: Initial Meeting with Student(s) q Practice overview and tour of facilities (spaces, materials, procedures including workflow processes, breaks, written documentation, etc.) q Introductions to staff and office support personnel q Patient population q Allied health services (system-based practice) q Scheduling and routine q Student level of participation in history taking and physical exam q Patient processing (what can the student do to support the office workflow?)

Orientation Recommendations: q Contact information (scheduling, questions, etc.) q Communication expectations (cell, texts, timing, etc.) q Professionalism and decorum (dress, arrival time, cell phone, etc.) q Work space (phone, breaks, locker, security, etc.) q Setting clear expectations from you to the student and from the student to you q Rotation objectives (student s and yours) q Mode of operation (leadership style, permission levels)

Orientation Recommendations: q Feedback system (meetings, timing, process) q Evaluation(s) q Reflections and challenges q Legal restrictions (EMRs) q Patient education This serves as a best practice checklist to assist you as the preceptor in orienting your student to your practice and clearly defining expectations for both parties. The orientation process helps to reduce potential future conflict and opens lines of communication.

The 2 nd Critical Area for Effective Precepting is FACILITATION The following are best practices regarding facilitation recommendations. A checklist is provided in the form of a PDF document as a resource. q Setting goals and expectations q Role modeling using Think Out Loud strategy q Success in the teaching / learning process is always attributed to the creativity of the teacher. An effective teacher has to choose the best strategy to help a student better understand concepts being taught.

The 2 nd Critical Area for Effective Precepting is Facilitation Additional suggested strategies are: q Use case studies small to large q Book of guidelines q Mini conference before each patient q Give situational reading material q See what the student can do independently

The 3rd Critical Area for Effective Precepting is FEEDBACK qtiming and Setting *most useful following the experience * process established during orientation * formative and summative brief en route encounters

The 3rd Critical Area for Effective Precepting is FEEDBACK q Effective feedback characteristics: 1. Specific and performance based 2. Descriptive, not labeling 3. Based upon objectives and observable behaviors 4. Provide two-way communications 5. Based upon trust, honesty, concern (relational) 6. Private, particularly if giving a correction
