The first intake in the institute was done in July 2009 for the first group taking certificate in Chinese Language and Culture course. The first group taking Beginners in Chinese Language and Culture course commenced learning in October 2009 for their first semester. Vision Statement The vision of Confucius Institute is to be dynamic, self reliant and independent, a centre of excellence in provision of quality teaching in all Chinese programmes. Mission Statement The mission of Confucius Institute is to provide quality teaching in all Chinese Programmes and innovate ways of sustaining continued collaboration with Confucius Headquarters, Hanban China
Objectives The objectives of Confucius Institute are; (i) To teach Chinese language and culture to as many people as possible. (ii) To teach Chinese Fine Art, Sports and Game. Traditional Chinese medicine and Confucius philosophy to as many qualified people as possible. (iii) To promote increased positive interaction between Shandong Normal University and Kenyatta University through language and culture for socio-economic benefits. (iv) To promote, improve and protect the interests of Kenyatta University and that of Confucius Institute headquarters, Hanban, China as per the memorandum of understanding (v) Sustaining scholarship programmes for Kenyan students to learn Chinese language and culture in China and initiate exchange programmes between Kenya and China through Kenyatta University and Shandong Normal University. (vi) To institutionalize quality management systems in the operations of the institute. (vii) To participate in all national and international activities that will catapult the institute and Kenyatta University international recognition. Award A certificate in Chinese language and culture shall be awarded to successful candidates A letter of completion shall be awarded to successful candidate in the proficiency in Chinese language and culture. A certificate for beginners in Chinese language shall be awarded to successful candidates.

Proficiency in Chinese Language and Culture First semester Modern Chinese Culture Listening and Speaking Chinese Chinese for Specific Purposes Admission Requirements and Mode of Study The common University regulations and entry requirements for proficiency courses and certificate courses shall apply. Be holders of Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) or equivalent or Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) with Part time 1 semester Tuition: - Kshs. 20,000/- two (2) years work experience. Statutory Fees - Kshs. 10, 250/- Certificate in Chinese Language and Culture. Mean grade C- (minus) at KCSE or Equivalent. Full time 2 semesters Tuition: - Ksh. 40,000/- Statutory Fees - Kshs. 16,500/- Beginners in Chinese language and Culture. No tuition fee Proficiency in Chinese Language and Culture for Kenyatta University Members of staff Tuition: Kshs. 10,250/- MODE OF APPLICATION Bona fide Kenyatta University Students taking other programmes At least Form four, Diploma or Degree Certificate Full time 2 semesters 1 semester Part time (a) Application forms can be obtained from Kenyatta University, Admissions Block, Room No. 012 or at the Regional Centres located in Nairobi, Embu, Nyeri, Garissa, Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu and Kakamega on payment of a non-refundable fee of Kshs. 2,000/- for East Africans and Kshs. 4,000/- for candidates from outside East Africa.
