MISSION & GOALS GOALS Northwest Georgia College & Career Academy Quarterly Report December 17, 2014 The mission of Northwest Georgia College and Career Academy (NWGCCA) is to develop a 21st century workforce through world-class Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education (CTAE). Performance Based Goals & Measurable Objectives: Goal I: To implement and expand CTAE exploration course offerings for middle school students in grades 7 and 8. Completed Goal II: To increase student exposure to CTAE pathways, work place experiences and postsecondary education opportunities. Goal III: To provide access to End of Pathway Assessments. Completed Organizational & Management Performance-Based Goals: Goal I: To ensure all high school CTAE courses are aligned with forecasted employment and economic data. In Progress Goal II: To provide teachers with exposure and experiences to local business and industry. In Progress PARTNERSHIPS Business/Industry Partnership DEM (Design, Engineering, & Manufacturing) Middle School Summer Camp NWGCCA in partnership with 15 industry and community partners including the Boys/Girls Club and Greater Dalton Chamber, hosted a summer camp for middle school students June 2-6, 2014. The four-day camp had 62 participants. Students designed 3D drawings, fabricated race cars, utilized laser engraving technology, designed carpet, built/programmed robots, built a hover craft and learned electronics skills. In addition, the students toured advanced manufacturing facilities learned precision measurement skills, explored careers related to a personality profile, and learned soft skills. Explore Experience In partnership with the Greater Dalton Chamber and local businesses/industry, the NWGCCA provides high school juniors with 3-day job shadow experiences. Mechatronics Pathway Development In partnership with the floorcovering industry and Georgia Northwestern Technical College, the NWGCCA helped develop a Mechatronics Pathway for the State of Georgia that was approved by the Georgia Department of Education on May 9. The Program is in its second year and is under the leadership of Mr. John Warren, a chemistry and nuclear engineer by education and profession. In the 2014-15 school year there are 50 students preparing for a future in a STEM field by participation in the Mechatronics course at the NWGCCA.
Partnerships formed with Mohawk Industries, Dalton-Whitfield Chamber of Commerce, Georgia Northwestern Technical College, Dalton State College, Murray County High Schools, Dalton Utilities and 97 other business and industry partners. Representatives of these businesses signed letters stating that they would work to find ways financially and otherwise to support the goals of Northwest Georgia College and Career Academy. On Monday, August 11 th, 2014, members of Shaw Industries Learning Academy, kickstarted the Leadership Development Series at Northwest Georgia College and Career Academy. This new program is designed to inform and strengthen students nontechnical skills for the workplace, also known as soft skills. With The Academy focusing on career knowledge development and abilities, skills related to everyday work behavior is just as vital to an employee s repertoire as the actual physical knowledge to successfully and professionally complete tasks. Dave Moeller, CEO of The Academy, has organized guest speakers from various business and secondary education partners, like Shaw, to brief students on varying skills that are often over-looked but are essential in the work place. Topics for the seminars include Discipline and Character, Oral and Written Business Communication Skills, Appearance and Professional Image, Personal Responsibility, and Self-Management Performance. Contributing to the Leadership Development Series, the student body and faculty participate in a Professional Dress Day on the scheduled day of the monthly seminars. All participants arrive dressed to impress as if they were interviewing for a genuine job. Faculty also focuses on the concerned topics in their classroom instruction to further show the importance of such skills that influence the everyday lifestyle. Approximately LOCAL GRANT 210 students participated in the initial Leadership Development Series program. Whitfield County Board of Education donated approximately 21 acres of land to Georgia Northwestern Technical College for the purposes of building 80,000- square-foot, two-story building on the campus of the Northwest Georgia College and Career Academy. BUDGET The Georgia College and Career Academy Project granted NWGCCA $2.61 million which will allow for the expansion of NWGCCA to satellite courses at eight other locations. During 3 rd quarter 2014, Whitfield County Schools will submit reimbursement requests for grant funds that have been spent in accordance with the implementation of our grant. NWGCCA recently completed an annual financial audit of all budgetary records and grant spending. The audit reflected strong compliance with accounting requirements and accounted for all funds. Each month, the NWGCCA Board of Directors reviews budgetary reports related to the grant as well as other appropriated funding.

CAREER & COLLEGE FUNDS High School Program Areas: Agriculture, Architecture, Communications and Transportation, Business & Computer Science, Culinary Arts, Education, Engineering, Technology and Manufacturing, Family & Consumer Sciences, Government and Public Safety, Healthcare Services, Marketing, Sales and Services, Mechatronics. Middle School Program Areas: Career Development with a STEM focus GRADE LEVELS Northwest Georgia College & Career Academy serves students grades 9-12. NWGCCA STEM labs serve students grade 6-8. ENROLLMENT We work through our base high schools and middle schools to make students aware of our offerings and we use a seamless enrollment process to make sure students have easy access to their chosen career pathways. 2012-2013 Total number of students served at NWGCCA: 544 2012-2013 System-wide total students served in CTAE classes -grades 6-12 (some students took multiple CTAE classes): 5893 2013-2014 Total number of students served at NWGCCA: 580 2013-2014 System-wide total students served in CTAE classes -grades 6-12 (some students took multiple CTAE classes): 4610 (897 Middle School) (3713 High School) Used application process for 2014-2015 school year STUDENT SUPPORT NWGCCA provides all Work Based Learning and Youth Apprenticeship opportunities for Whitfield County Schools. NWGCCA serves as the district level CTAE advisory committee for Whitfield County Schools. The advisory committee is made up of representatives from large and small business and major community initiatives. Each career tech program associated with NWGCCA is required to have an advisory committee made up of experts from their related field. Technical Student Organizations supported FCCLA, FEA, HOSA, and Skills USA. Regional College & Career Fair On March 22, 2013, the NWGCCA hosted a regional College & Career Fair at the NWGA Trade & Convention Center. Over 5,000 middle and high school students from 8 school districts in NWGA Georgia attended. Over 300 colleges and businesses set up booths for the event.
STANDARDS & CURRICULUM Advisory committees are utilized to support the career pathways within the District. The advisory committees include representatives from appropriate industries, businesses, parents, and community partners who understand the career field and can shape the curriculum to help meet local needs. End of pathway assessments are administered to all students who have completed a pathway. End of Pathway assessments began in the spring of 2013. Unless the student is dually enrolled with the technical college. Industry Certified Pathways at NWGCCA: o During 2012-2013, the following programs earned Industry Certification: Transportation Logistical Operations NATEF Certified o The following programs received Industry Certification: Healthcare Services. STRUCTURE Construction has been completed for video broadcasting labs in Northwest High School and Southeast High School Teachers in specific program areas worked directly with the architects to describe program needs and collaborate to ensure the best possible outcome.
