POSTGRADUATE CASE STUDY PENN SMITH PGDIP IN COUNSELLING & PSYCHOTHERAPY BA (HONS) IN COUNSELLING STUDIES During my Postgraduate studies I gained valuable experience working as a counsellor for a mental health organisation, as well as working within the University as a research assistant in a small research team. I presented at two York St John Postgraduate conferences and I ran a workshop with other members of the teaching team. Having conference experience has certainly helped when presenting my PhD research. Whilst at York St John I also gained teaching experience working as a classroom assistant in an Undergraduate British Sign Language class. This helped me to develop a creative and flexible approach to teaching. I really enjoyed my experience at York St John. The people I met have had a long-lasting effect on me, including my peers, teaching staff and the individuals I met whilst on placement. Two years since graduating my connection to York St John is still strong. Last year I co-taught the Access to Learning module for postgraduate counselling students and currently I am working in a research team with a view to publish the findings from the project where I previously worked as a research assistant. York St John helped me to change careers and develop as an individual. I have wonderful memories of my time there and continue to enjoy the friendships I made. If you d like to find out more about our Postgraduate offer contact the Admissions team, admissions@yorksj.ac.uk or phone 01904 876598. You can also come along to our special Postgraduate Open Evening on Wednesday 21st February 2018 from 4pm to 7pm in Temple Hall and the Students Union. Or visit www.yorksj.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/ 7

POSTGRADUATE STUDENT LIFE You don t need to say goodbye to your sports team and societies, or to your favourite pubs, cafes and shops when you graduate! You ve already found your own reasons to love living and studying in York, and there is still plenty of time to enjoy the experience as a postgraduate student. Students study from all over the world and all walks of life on our Postgraduate courses, and starting a new course is a chance to meet a new group of people. STUDENTS UNION York St John Students Union offers a support system for all students including those continuing onto Postgraduate study. This year a new Liberation Officer role will be dedicated to Postgraduate issues - liaising with the Presidents and appropriate faculty members to ensure the Postgraduate student voice is heard and considered. As a Postgraduate student you ll get the same commitment to communication, with opportunities throughout the year to provide feedback and open space events run by the SU where you can share any issues and have your say. YOUR WELLBEING The same supportive and friendly atmosphere you ve experienced at York St John University as an Undergraduate is still in place amongst our Postgraduate community. The services provided by the Student Information Desk, including the Wellbeing Team, the Study Advice Team and the Disability Advice Team continue to be available when you need them. The transition from Undergraduate to Postgraduate study will mean a new challenge academically but, as always, support is here for you. 9

CHOOSING YOUR COURSE: TAUGHT DEGREES A taught Postgraduate degree will build on the skills and knowledge you are developing now, and allow you to study your chosen subject at a higher level. A Masters level qualification is an impressive addition to your CV, and can prepare you for eventually studying as a PhD candidate if this is your ambition. CHOOSING YOUR COURSE: RESEARCH DEGREES Each research degree is unique and involves working closely with academic supervisors to conduct detailed research into a specific topic. If you achieve at least a 2:1 and enjoyed working on a research project, a research degree may be right for you. To become a research student you need to find a new topic (or new approach to a topic) which you are passionate about and an academic who shares this interest who can supervise you. In addition to carrying out and writing up research, students will attend seminars and conferences and engage in skills training appropriate to their individual needs. Many PhDs candidates will gain experience of teaching while they study. In the 2017 Postgraduate Research Experience Survey 95% of York St John University respondents were satisfied with their overall experience of their research Degree programme, compared to the national average of 82%. As a research student you will be part of a small, friendly and supportive research community. As a York St John University research student you will be supported through: An expense accounts of up to 900 per annum for full-time fee-paying research students ( 450 for part-time fee paying) to support your research. Access to the highly-rated Research Skills Development Programme and Writing Retreats. Use of our multidisciplinary Graduate Centre so you can collaborate and make friends across disciplinary boundaries. Free places and the chance to present at the annual Research Reflections and Postgraduate Research Conferences. 12

Masters by Research (MSc or MA) A Masters by Research is studied over a single year full-time and you will be expected to produce a 30,000 word thesis. This may be a good option if you would like to study for a research degree but do not feel ready to commit to the 3-4 years of research required for a PhD. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) A PhD is designed to transform you into an independent researcher, qualified for a relevant academic or research post in your subject. PhD students carry out 3-4 years of full-time research, resulting in a thesis of up to 100,000 words. Some practice led PhDs include a professional practice component. 13

POSTGRADUATE CASE STUDY CATH HEINEMEYER A PRACTICE-LED PhD IN PERFORMANCE AND MEDIA PRODUCTION As an arts practitioner, I never pictured myself doing a PhD. Yet when I became aware of a funded opportunity to undertake practice-based research into storytelling with adolescents at York St John University, I felt this was a path I needed to explore. Four years later I am overwhelmingly glad I did so. There is no other way, as an adult, I could ever have had such support to develop in my profession and thinking. My supervisors, between them, had a wealth of both academic and artistic expertise. There is a takenfor-granted understanding at York St John that these kinds of knowledge are mutually nourishing, perhaps because it has evolved with emphases on training teachers and professionals. York St John s relationships with other local organisations has been vital to my experience in fact my PhD was co-hosted by York Theatre Royal, giving me the opportunity to develop as a performer and practitioner. It also ensured that my evolving theoretical understanding was grounded in the day-to-day realities of practice with young people. The small scale of the University means that I have shared my time with a supportive community of postgraduate researchers from a wide variety of disciplines. Interdisciplinary thinking is an integral part of the atmosphere at York St John. After my PhD, the university decided to support my ongoing research with a postdoctoral position here in the School of Performance & Media Production. I am still very much an arts practitioner, but one with research and enquiry woven into all I do, and expanded networks to work within. 15
