Background to the project (UNITET) 3 The British Council's Department of Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) is funding a partnership project between Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, Otto/Ijanikin, Lagos and Havering College of Further and Higher Education, UK through its Education Partnership in Africa (EPA) project. The project, UK-Nigeria Teacher Training (UNITET), is designed to address the skills gap in innovative teaching in Nigeria in order to meet the demands of the 21st century. With over 50 years of teacher training expertise each, both institutions have joined forces to produce a six month pilot programme, specifically designed to give Nigerian teachers quality training and professional development, raise standards, build on expertise and increase confidence.

Aims of the project 4 Aims and objectives The course, which will be piloted and delivered at Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education (AOCOED) is intended to increase the employability of teachers and students alike through a customised work-based learning delivery in schools and other educational organisations. By raising the standards of quality teacher training provision through the introduction of a new Nigerian post 16 teaching qualification, the Advanced Professional Certificate in Innovative Teaching (APCIT), the project aims to bridge the skills gap in innovative teaching practices in Nigeria, increase the range of courses offered by the AOCOED and offer progression on to a full PGCE course completed at Havering College of Further & Higher Education in the UK The pilot course has been developed to have a dual role; as a pilot course leading to the new post 16 teaching qualification, the Advanced Professional Certificate in Innovative Teaching (APCIT) successful applications could progress to a full-time PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate in Education) in the UK subject to validating universities admission criteria. Project timetable The pilot project was launched in September 2009 and will be finalised in February 2011. The full programme will commence academic year 2011/12 The framework for the pilot module includes: 4 months of on campus lectures based at the Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education in Otto/Ijanikin Lagos 6 weeks of external teaching practice and observation Formal examinations in the final 2 weeks Modules are structured to include lectures, teaching practice, observation and assessment all designed to equip teachers with the latest skills in result orientated methodology and uses of latest innovations and technology in teaching.

5 On campus teaching will be delivered in the new state of the art ICT facilities, equipped with smart board and latest ICT technology. The pilot programme will be assessed by visiting lecturers from Havering College of Further & Higher Education, UK. Successful graduates will be awarded the new post 16 teaching qualification, Advanced Professional Certificate in Innovative Teaching (APCIT) by Havering College. Assessment on the full programme commencing academic year 2011/12 will be undertaken by AOCOED. Upon successful completion of the APCIT students will be eligible to progress on to a full PGCE course studied in the UK, subject to a previous recognised degree, leading to a teaching or lecturing career in schools, colleges, businesses and organisations worldwide. Dissemination Dissemination is planned for November 2010 and February 2011 with a series of TV, radio and local media interviews, publications and editorials both in Nigeria and the UK. Outcome The planned outcome of the pilot is that at least 25 professional teachers will successfully achieve the APCIT enabling them to pass on their skills, underpinning knowledge and examples of best practice to further train other students embarking on their teaching career.

Introducing APCIT 6 Advanced Professional Certificate in Innovative Teaching (APCIT) Active learning theories Learning theories Assessment theories and methods Effective practices Innovative teaching techniques How APCIT works APCIT exposes the teacher to result orientated session planning embedding core skills of literacy, numeracy and ICT in specialist curricular. This helps the teacher to develop a template for successful lessons to meet the individual needs of students in teaching the area of specialism. The teacher is equipped to cope with the individual learning barriers using the existing theories of learning styles to enhance understanding of how students learn and more effective ways to teach. Also included in the programme is the importance of 20 minute micro-teaching session lesson plans, teaching resources, a written justification of planning decisions and written evaluations. Observation reports produced by the teacher/lecturer are to form part of the summative assessment. Learning resources/support needs include CD ROMS, access to e-learning, on-line mentoring, on-line materials provided by Havering College. APCIT Entry Requirements Pilot programme Those who have successfully completed and hold the following qualifications: NCE, HND, ND BSC/BA graduates who intend to teach or who are already teaching, which is the only straight forward route to a full PGCE in the UK with special focus on those with degrees in Integrated Sciences, Maths and English Existing teachers or trainers without formal teaching qualifications Qualified teachers who are looking for career development Those who wish to train other teachers/trainers to become professionals Entry requirements for the full time programme commencing academic year 2011/12 see pages 9 & 10.
