The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at UB offers programs and research training in the clinical response to drug therapy. These subjects are examined at the molecular, genomic, biochemical, biological, and clinical levels through an interdisciplinary curriculum in the areas of pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, pharmacometrics, pharmacogenomics and systems pharmacology. Degree Pathways & How to Apply DOCTOR OF PHARMACY (PharmD) DEGREE: PharmD program pathways: Early Assurance Program: 2+4=6 Incoming University at Buffalo freshmen selecting the pharmacy major are admitted directly into the PharmD degree through our prestigious Early Assurance (EA) Program. This program gives talented freshmen the heightened advantage of securing a seat in our four-year PharmD curriculum after completing two years of prescribed undergraduate course work and an interview. There are no additional high school GPA or SAT/ACT requirements and EA students are exempt from the Pharmacy College Admission Test (PCAT). PharmCAS (Pharmacy College Application Service) Transfers and students who do not complete Early Assurance may apply to the PharmD program via PharmCAS as a regular or early decision candidate. Students must complete all undergraduate prerequisite courses by the end of the summer semester prior to fall matriculation. Additionally, applicants must submit a PCAT score, letters of reference and a personal statement. Interview invitations are extended to candidates with a competitive application. Students eligible for entry into the junior-year curriculum complete all prerequisite course and GPA requirements. Graduate (BS/MS, MS and PhD) Students enrolled in the BS program in pharmaceutical sciences only may apply to the accelerated BS/MS. The traditional graduate programs (MS, PhD) require completion of a bachelor s degree in a science-related field with a competitive 3.0 or higher GPA, the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), two letters of recommendation, and personal statement; prior research experience is also considered. Expanding Opportunities through Global Outreach Our many community-based initiatives give you the tools necessary to address practical global health concerns, promote culturally competent health care, and foster the development of servant leadership in diverse populations. CLINICAL EDUCATION: Meeting the health needs of diverse populations through student education and outreach UB International Pharmaceutical Students Federation (IPSF) IPSF, as part of the American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists International Pharmaceutical Students Federation, is a student-led organization focused on aiding underserved populations on the local, national and international levels. IPSF organizes international medical mission trips to locations such as Honduras and the Dominican Republic, as well as alternative spring break, national Habitat for Humanity trips, and supports many local community health clinics and non-profit outreach centers. Buffalo Refugee Community: Sustainable Medication Literacy Program This community-driven outreach program assists refugees entering the Western New York area with medication management through culturally sensitive patient education materials. These materials give refugees from all over the globe a better understanding of how, when and why medications have been provided to them, resulting in increased compliance and improved health. CLINICAL RESEARCH INITIATIVES: Meeting the health needs of diverse populations through new ideas and approaches Zimbabwe Center of Excellence for Clinical Pharmacology and Pharmaceutical Sciences An international leader in sustainable initiatives for global health issues, this center for HIV/AIDS and HCV pharmacotherapy guides the transfers of clinical pharmacology and therapeutics to resource-limited countries across the globe. This work is done in partnership with the University of Zimbabwe. Buffalo Jamaica Innovation Enterprise This unique center brings together leaders from UB, Buffalo, and various public and private organizations in Jamaica to implement research programs focusing on patient safety and infectious diseases. The center also actively promotes education and training through the Jamaica Global Infectious Diseases Research Training Program, a collaborative program supported by UB, the University of the West Indies and Ministry of Health, Jamaica. UB Academic Health Center (AHC) UB is a member of the Association of Academic Health Centers (AAHC), an elite group of national health professional schools that leads on issues concerning health science education. To transform interprofessional health care into an integrated multidisciplinary model that addresses global healthrelated challenges through interprofessional education (IPE) courses and seminars during the academic year.
