The GE Foundation K-12 STEM Integration Conference July 15-20, 2018 The 2018 GE Foundation K-12 STEM Integration Conference program s focus is to explore effective practices in STEM education to assist educators, schools, and districts in creating a vision and culture to support a plan for an integrated STEM education for all students. The goals of the conference are to: Build the capacity of educators as district, state, national and international STEM leaders Provide real world application-based, interactive STEM integration experiences for STEM educators Assist STEM educators in improving their practice through tools, resources, and innovative approaches Empower STEM educators to integrate STEM across the curriculum through strategic action planning Grow STEM leadership to build a STEM culture across their communities Below is a DRAFT Agenda. Monday July 16, Hilton Cocoa Beach Oceanfront Hotel 6:30 am - 7:30 am Breakfast 7:30 am 7:35 am Overview of Conference and Day 1: Establishing a Vision and Collaborative Culture for Implementing Integrated STEM The goal for the teams over the week is to leave with a shared vision for STEM and action steps for working toward creating a STEM culture. The week-long program will emphasize the importance of starting with specific goals in support of STEM literacy for all students; creating an achievable path built on an integrated set of STEM practices; and building a STEM Culture that engages school, district, and community stakeholders. 7:35-8:15 am Inspiring the Future STEM Workforce This daily morning session will engage attendees in exciting platforms for learning about areas rich with career opportunities spanning science, technology, engineering, math, and computer science. Throughout the week teams will explore the possibilities through creating with technology. 8:15 am - 10:45 am The STEM Classroom: A Dive Into an Integrated Three Dimensional STEM Experience Each grade band session will focus on an integrated STEM exploration that provides an engaging three dimensional interactive experience to illustrate an important crosscutting STEM concept. This session will give attendees a common experience for reflecting on how the integration of STEM at each grade band can increase student motivation and understanding of science and what to think about when integrating real world applications. A Break will be incorporated in the session 10:45 am 11:30am Team Share and Discussion Team Planning Time will be built in each day. Discussion prompts: What does a STEM Literate Graduate look like? What is our current STEM picture? Where do we want to be? How do we get there? 11:30 am- 12:30 pm Creating a STEM Culture for Teaching and Learning In this session, Jeff will share his experiences working with districts and state frameworks to create foundations for integrated STEM to become a reality. The importance of starting with specific goals around supporting STEM literate students, creating an achievable path built on an integrated set of science, engineering, and other cross-curricular practices, and connecting to the strengths of your community will be discussed. Tables share out a VIP (very important point) and VIQ (very important question) all teams would benefit from hearing. Table Topics for Sharing Effective Practices: Integrating Computational Thinking Skills Problem/Project Based Learning Design Engineering Challenges Incorporating a Maker Mindset to Support Stem Career Awareness: The GE Brilliant Career Lab 9:00-9:30 am Team Reflection and Discussion teams share what they took away from the sharing of Best practices and revisit the STEM lesson/unit they bought. A Break will be incorporated into this session. 9:30-10:45/ 10:45-12:00 noon Effective Practices in STEM Integration (Concurrent Sessions offered twice that are in same topics as the Team table discussions) Integrating Computational Thinking Skills
