The ability to create and lead a high-performance team is crucial in a manager s path to the top. In this program, you will analyze the key challenges and unique opportunities inherent to designing and managing teams. Team members are frequently functional and divisional managers who have partial views, different behaviors and cultural backgrounds, and very often conflicting interests. Understanding the levers and tools you can use to get the most out of your team is crucial. This program will help you acquire the tools and skills you need to create a truly cohesive team that consistently excels over time without losing its strength or creativity. METHODOLOGY We apply very dynamic, practical methods that will allow you to enhance your knowledge, analysis and skills. You will be able to put into practice what you have learned from day one with the additional support of specifically designed tools: Case studies Group dynamics Individual coaching with a professional coach Team executive challenge with a peer to peer coaching Role-play Learning experience of a hands-on team dynamics (outside campus) Pre-program Prior to the start of the program, you will be asked to complete a short questionnaire to help you discover your personality type. Please complete the test before the program starts. The results of this test are completely confidential and will be handed back to you in class. They will provide the basis for you to work on developing your team skills with the help of a professional coach assigned to you during the program. You will also be sent study materials, such as readings and cases, which you will have to read and analyze before the program begins. Get to grips with key processes to ensure that each of the stages can be mastered and learn how to achieve outstanding results through building team commitment. Address the increasing diversity in teams, which is of particular relevance to virtual teams, especially when team members reflect different nationalities and cultural backgrounds. Learn how to resolve the sources of tension and conflict that often arise from misunderstandings. Gain access to relevant training, tools and frameworks that help identify and decipher the diversity inherent in teams in order to tap into innovation and talent pools and harness the team s full potential. Skills for developing a management team Work on your personal development as a team leader with very practical and useful methodologies such as case studies and specially designed exercises that give rise to a very rich learning environment. We will have some role-playing dynamics that will help you improve your skills during the program, and you will have a personal coach that will help you develop an action plan to excel as a team leader. CONTENT Fostering effective communication Acquire the skills you need to create effective communication across geographic, time, cultural and linguistic barriers. Address the team s needs at both the team and individual level. Learn how to promote open and collaborative group discussions and capture the unique and innovative ideas that emerge. Discover which levers can be used to enable efficient collaboration and motivate team members. Leading teams in times of crisis Look at all the variables that can help improve the performance of a team and learn how to manage in times of uncertainty: more communication, better coordination and increased understanding of how to face the various challenges and conflicts that continuously arise. Team diagnosis Study tools and methods for effective team assessment that enable you to identify the key problem areas and design a specific improvement plan to address them with the help of a coach that you will have personally assigned during the program. Building trust A team s success is highly dependent on the level of trust developed. Levels of trust can be directly associated with increased motivation, unity, loyalty and efficiency within the team. Teams benefit from face-to-face interaction, which enhances trust and therefore offers clear advantages. Learn how to employ mechanisms for teams that create the right environment for trust to flourish and obtain the required results. Building and Leading High-performance Teams Anneloes Raes Academic Director Assistant Professor of Managing People in Organizations PhD in Organizational Behavior, Maastricht University M.Sc. in Psychology, Radboud University Nijmegen, the Netherland Prof. Raes research and teaching expertise include top management teams, successful interactions between top and middle managers, self-management, leadership, and teamwork. Prior to joining IESE, Anneloes worked as an assistant professor at the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland, and she held visiting scholarships at UCLA s Anderson School of Management, as well as Harvard University. Yih-teen Lee Associate Professor of Managing People in Organizations PhD in Management, HEC, University of Lausanne Master in International Business, National Taiwan University Bachelor in International Trade, National Taiwan University He specializes in cross-cultural management and cultural competence, person-environment fit, and leadership and its boundary conditions. His paper Satisfaction and Individual Preference for Structuring won the Best International Paper Award of the Organizational Behavior Division at the 2006 Academy of Management Annual Meeting, and was one of the three finalists of the academy-wide Carolyn Dexter Award. He serves as an ad hoc reviewer of Leadership Quarterly and as a member of the editorial board of Revue Économique et Sociale. The co-editor of La Compétence Culturelle, he is currently writing a book on the cultural contexts of human resource development. Rafael de Santiago Professor of Managerial Decision Sciences PhD in Mathematics, University of California, Irvine PhD in Economics, University of Valladolid, Spain M.Sc. in Mathematics, University of California, San Diego Rafael is Professor and Department Chair of the Managerial Decision Sciences Department at IESE Business School. He has been Visiting Professor at the University of California, San Diego, and at the University of Limerick, Ireland. Until 1997 he held a joint appointment in Economic Theory and History of Economic Thought at the University of Valladolid, Spain. In his current research he combines stochastic differential equations with perturbation theory to calibrate prices of derivatives when they are close to maturity. In his 2008 book, Derivatives Markets with Stochastic Volatility, he shows how to include several sources of stochastic volatility in the Black-Scholes model, interest-rate models and Value-at-Risk models. 4
