Online Course Info Online courses are a great alternative to campus-based classes, but before you jump in, review the following tips so you are making an INFORMED decision. Online classes require that you... Possess strong time management skills. You will need to organize your schedule to meet assignment deadlines. Communicate frequently with your instructor and fellow classmates. This means you must know how to access your student email. Plan on putting aside the same amount of time for your online course as you would for a face-to-face course. In fact, online courses can be even more demanding of your time, so be prepared. Log onto Blackboard, your course management site, at least weekly to read new announcements, complete discussion boards, track assignments, etc. Online classes do have an attendance requirement that is demonstrated through your participation on the site as well as through submission of assignments. Have access to a reliable, up to date computer with a high speed internet connection and word processing software. Be proactive and seek help when needed. For help with course content, email your instructor and/or visit the CAPSwebsite: www.greatbay.edu/caps For technical assistance, visit the help desk: www.greatbay.edu/helpdesk All classes may include an online component. www.greatbay.edu 8

ALL-Star coaching When he signed on to coach the baseball team at Great Bay Community College, Enrique Calero figured he could use his nearly 30 years of experience in professional and amateur baseball to help young players refine their talents and win a few games. Little did he know he d be helping them cope with a humanitarian crisis at the same time. Calero grew up in Puerto Rico and recruited a half-dozen players from the island to come to Portsmouth to play baseball and take classes at Great Bay. When Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico, Calero stepped in to serve as surrogate father figure to the student-athletes, comforting them, sharing their concern for their homeland and helping them get information about friends and family. One of our players found out his house is gone, Calero said. I can t imagine what these kids, who are here by themselves, must be going through. Baseball is definitely helping them. It keeps them from thinking about the situation back home, but it s been challenging. It s not been easy for any of us. Great Bay competed in the fall baseball league of the Yankee Small College Conference. It s the first college baseball on the Seacoast since 1997, when the University of New Hampshire played its final season. The Herons play their home games at Leary Field in Portsmouth. Five of Great Bay s 17 players are from Puerto Rico, and all are learning English while taking classes at Great Bay and adjusting to a different culture. Calero recruited all the players from Puerto Rico. While he cannot imagine the anxiety of his young players, he knows what it s like to leave home at a young age to pursue a baseball dream. He left Puerto Rico in 1990 when he was recruited by Rend Lake College, a junior college in Ina, Illinois. He signed a minor league contract with the Houston Astros in 1991, and played minor league and independent baseball until 1998. He spent most of the past two decades as a scout for the Tampa Bay Rays of Major League baseball, a college recruiter, coach and agent. Calero became involved with Great Bay after meeting Wildolfo Arvelo, Great Bay s president, who is also from Puerto Rico. Arvelo told Calero that Great Bay was starting a baseball program, and encouraged him to pursue the coaching opportunity. It s great to have college baseball back on the Seacoast, Calero said. It s been awesome. We ve had a lot of fun with it, and we re holding our own in the league. To learn more about our faculty, staff, students and alumni visit greatbay.edu/mycollege
