COURSE COSTS EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS NEEDED The course will pay for, or subsidise, most of the essential materials used during studio activities such as drawing and in practical workshops. There will be some costs incurred during your course. You ll need to buy a Personal Art Pack of equipment and specialist consumables from UCA s online story for 100. You ll then need to buy top-up materials from the online story in Year 2, which will cost 85*. Please note this is separate to the University Materials & Service Charge of 130* that all students pay each year if under the age of 19 years when starting their course. VISITS Each year there are a number of local day visits to museums, galleries and locations that play an important part in your study and serve to inform and enrich your studio work and portfolio. The range of visits will vary according to availability of venue and cost of entry fees etc. Visits are for all students and the cost inclusive of transport is 60* each year. RECOMMENDED EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS As you progress through your course and decide which pathway to study you may require further specialist materials and equipment. SUMMER PROJECT Make Your Mark: alternative drawing tools No doubt you ve already used many different media to draw, such as pencils, pastels, charcoal, pens, brush and ink, diffusers and airbrushes, and so on. We want you to consider how these tools direct and inform your drawing, and how your drawings would change if these tools weren t available to you. Your summer project is to design six tools and make a journal that supports your research, decisionmaking, problem solving and design development. The tools you design and make will be used in your first project. Both the tools and the journal will be assessed as part of your first unit. We don t want to see replicas of any existing tools the whole point of this project is to design a new tool for drawing. However, you may want to alter an existing object, for example by using a broom as a starting point, but disengaging it from its original use and adding fresh elements. Consider the materials you use and how you can develop them to produce interesting tools that make exciting and unexpected marks, cuts or various effects. Whatever materials you choose to work with, it s important that you develop them visually think of the objects as sculptures in their own right. Where do I start? Here s a list of artists who ve made drawing tools. Look at these artists and put research in your journal. Make notes about relevant artists that might inform your ideas. -Rebecca Horn made attachments to her body that held pencils so she could draw using her face. She also made an extension from her hands so she could draw from a distance. How do you think this altered, or limited, the kind of marks she could make? -Jean Tinguely made drawing machines to draw for him! Could you make a simple devise or drawing machine? -Peter Fischli and David Weiss didn t make drawing tools, but look at their work for inspiration regarding their ingenious use of objects. -Jason Martin makes paintings with just one brushstroke, but he makes a bespoke brush for each painting. On your first day at UCA, please bring: -A journal with notes that demonstrate your research and design development -Six developed 3D objects that could be used as alternative tools for drawing, painting or making.
