You must pass the mastery tests in each unit to the 80% level before you can go on. In addition, there are cumulative tests from time to time. These are tests you can take only once, so studying before them is essential to do well. Your final mark for the course is based 60% on mastery tests and 40% on cumulative tests. In this unit you will review various punctuation problems, working on the correct use of: Capitalization and titles The comma in compound sentences, for items in a series, as introducers/interrupters, and for nonessential elements The semicolon The apostrophe for showing possession, in contractions, and in plurals Quotation marks used for direct and indirect quotations The colon Parentheses, dashes, and brackets End punctuation Numbers This unit uses Mastering Essential English Skills as the textbook. In this unit you will practice writing properly formatted paragraphs including topic sentences, supporting or detail sentences, effective transitions, and concluding sentences. Paragraph styles will include: Cause/Effect Compare/Contrast Descriptive Explanatory/Instructive Narrative Opinion/Persuasive This unit uses Reading and Writing for Success as the textbook. In this unit you will investigate the following topics and practice working with Expository essays, persuasive essays, and narrative essays Brainstorming use a concept map to generate ideas Organizing use a network tree to organize ideas Writing a thesis statement Outlining use an outline to help you write an essay This unit uses Reading and Writing for Success as the textbook. Ask your teacher for the Unit 6 Worksheet. In Reading and Writing for Success, read pp. 150 151 Writing Essays and pp. 155-162 Planning and Writing an Essay. Complete all the work in the worksheet.
