Statements & Search Criteria Mission To teach life skills, provide meaningful learning experiences, and build leadership skills in African-American and other underrepresented Chesterfield County Public Schools students through mentoring, tutoring, experiential field trips, and recognition. Background MEGA Mentors was created in 2009 when the Superintendent of Chesterfield County Public Schools asked African American community leaders to be role models for students. The goal was to improve academic performance, increase graduation rates, and reduce disciplinary issues. This was the catalyst that ignited the formation of MEGA Mentors Mentors Expecting Greater Achievement. Since that time, the program has grown from supporting 20 students to now providing mentors for as many as 500 mentees in seven Chesterfield County middle and high schools. The mentors engage with the students in groups as well as individually and follow a structured curriculum of 75 lessons centered around the core values of respect, responsibility, effort, and achievement and related to enhancing leadership, self-confidence, and academic success. Impact Top accomplishments for MEGA Mentors include: Participating students demonstrated positive trends in attendance, grades, and discipline 75% pass rate for tutored students Rise in seniors with post graduation plans Expanded curriculum to address life skills and coping skills More than $20,000 was given to graduating seniors pursuing higher education Top future goals include: hiring a part time program coordinator expanding reach from seven to nine schools increasing the number of trained mentors from 110 to 150 Needs Most pressing needs include: $20,000 to support part time program coordinator position Volunteer mentors Areas Of Service Areas Served Areas Chesterfield County MEGA Mentors currently serves middle and high school students in seven Chesterfield County Public schools.
