Qualifications The successful candidate will possess a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree (or equivalent) and will be licensed, or eligible for licensure, in the Province of Ontario. They will also possess an advanced degree in a field relevant to the work of the Ontario Veterinary College, with preference given to candidates with a doctoral degree, specialty board certification, or a graduate degree in post-secondary education. Qualified candidates must be eligible to be appointed to a tenured faculty position at OVC at either the Associate Professor or Professor rank. Associate Dean, Students and Academic, Ontario Veterinary College Appointment at the Rank of Associate or Professor Position Description The Ontario Veterinary College, University of Guelph, invites applications for the position of Associate Dean, Academic and Students. The Associate Dean is a key member of the OVC senior leadership team and is responsible for advancing the academic, professional and personal development of students in the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program. Leadership The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of andragogy, curriculum design, assessment, and learning outcomes. They will have strategic understanding of the current and future skills, knowledge, and attributes needed for success in the veterinary profession, and demonstrate an understanding of methodologies that provide a supportive and intellectually stimulating learning environment that promotes academic success and learner well-being. They will be responsible for overseeing the provision of programs and services that help all DVM students achieve their potential. They will also create and foster a supportive college environment that is inviting, accessible, and reflective of the diversity of our students. The ideal candidate will be an exceptional, dynamic, and innovative leader who embraces change. They will have strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence with outstanding management and communication skills, as well as an ability to inspire faculty, staff and students. The Associate Dean will be expected to lead community engagement and sustain positive relationships with all stakeholders, both inside and outside the College. Research and Teaching The ideal candidate will be a successful researcher in a field related to the College s programs and activities with a recognized and sustained research program. In addition, they will also be able to demonstrate in-depth experience as an educator, characterized by learning innovation, peer-reviewed contributions, and achievements in andragogy. As part of a top comprehensive university, OVC has a long history of solving complex health problems for both farm and companion animals. ABOUT THE ONTARIO VETERINARY COLLEGE Established in 1862, the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) at the University of Guelph is at the forefront of veterinary medicine. As the oldest veterinary college in North America, OVC has been preparing veterinarians to meet the needs of animal care givers for more than 155 years. One-third of veterinarians in Canada have graduated from the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program at OVC. ABOUT THE DOCTOR OF VETERINARY MEDICINE PROGRAM The Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) Ranks #1 in Canada, 4th in North America and 7th in the World, for Veterinary Science. The Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program at the Ontario Veterinary College is offered during the Fall and Winter semesters only and normally requires four years to complete. The college is accredited jointly by the Canadian and American Veterinary Medical Association. The D.V.M. degree from Guelph is respected by veterinarians throughout the world. Ontario Veterinary College Facts: Founded in 1862; the oldest veterinary college in Canada and the United States. OVC is one of three founding colleges of the University of Guelph in 1964. A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program provides students with the education and clinical training they need to diagnose and treat illnesses and injuries in animals, as well as understand the care needed to keep animals healthy. PARTNERSHIPS Faculty within the Department of Pathobiology play key roles in a number of strategic initiatives at the University of Guelph including the: Animal Health Laboratory partners with the faculty in the Department of Pathobiology as the laboratory of choice for government and universities in Canada, for agriculture, food safety, and animal health testing. As a partner, they provide high-value laboratory services to the private sector in selected markets. Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative was founded in 1992 and has four main objectives: health surveillance, education, research, and management. This group spans across Canada and researchers collaborate to address various health issues associated with the wildlife health population. The post mortem results are entered into a national database, which provides researchers the opportunity to track the spread of various diseases. RESEARCH AT THE ONTARIO VETERINARY COLLEGE Researchers at OVC conduct innovative, collaborative research aimed at improving the health and well-being of animals, humans and ecosystems. This work covers a broad range of disciplines ranging from basic laboratory investigation to epidemiological field studies to applied clinical research in companion animals, food animals and wildlife to investigations in to veterinary medical communications and wellness within the veterinary and agricultural professions. Our research strength stems from our collective expertise, collaborative partnerships, research infrastructure, patients, clients and supportive donors that enable us to sustain and grow a world-class research enterprise. Some programs are categorized as core research or as globally recognized areas of research strength while others have been organized into virtual research institutes, such as the Institute for Comparative Cancer Investigation, the Centre for Public Health and Zoonosis or the Cardiovascular Centre. Centre for Public Health and Zoonoses was established in 2006 to recognize and build on the strong tradition of public health research and education at the University of Guelph. The role of CPHAZ is to coordinate existing public health research at the University of Guelph, create and support working relationships between researchers across disciplines, and advance education related to zoonoses and public health. Institute for Comparative Cancer Investigation, which was launched in 2007, has the mission to broaden the scope of research and deepen our understanding of cancer. Collaborative researchers with the Institute span eight departments across the University including cancer biologists, veterinarians, chemists, mathematicians, computer scientists, toxicologists, psychologists, and others including from external organizations like the University of Waterloo and the University of Toronto. Poultry Health Research Network, which is a multifaceted network of 38 experts who collaborate to solve basic and applied issues related to poultry health, production and welfare, as well as industry-relevant issues relating to the environment, food safety, and outreach. Toronto Zoo collaborates closely with the Department of Pathobiology through its graduate program in Zoological Medicine and Pathology. The Doctor of Veterinary Science program is a clinical doctoral program unique to the OVC.
