UNIT 3 Lesson 11 Adding and Subtracting Decimals (1 week / 5 days) pages 70-74 3. Activities for Understanding SUGGESTIONS After shading their grids, the student will be able to write the sum of decimal numbers. Give students 10 by 10 grids. On the board, write addition problems such as 0.8 + 0.32 and 0.52 + 0.73. Ask students to shade their grids, using a different color for each number. Have them write each sum. After making a 3- or 4- digit number, the student will be able to rename the number in order to regroup. Give pairs of students a set of number cards 0-9. Have them choose three or four number cards and make a 3- or 4- digit number. Have partners take turns renaming the numbers to regroup a 10 as 1s, a 100 as 10s, and a 1,000s. For example, 572 with a 10 regrouped as 1s is 500 + 60 + 12. Partners should check each other s regrouping. After finding the sum of decimal numbers the student will be able to explain the procedure. Have each student write three different numbers with two or three decimals places on three small slips of paper. Place the slips of paper facedown and mix. Have each student choose three slips of paper, find the sum, and explain his or her procedures. Updated 10/5/2017 12:33 PM 3

Activities for Understanding SUGGESTIONS After writing a decimal number, the student will be able tell how many decimal places will be in the product. Have pairs of students each write a decimal number. Then have them tell how many decimals places will be in the product of the two numbers. Have them repeat the activity at least ten times. After reading problems aloud the student will be able to give its product mentally. On the board, write problems such as 2 x 0.3 and 3 x 0.22. Ask students to read each aloud; give its product mentally, for instance, 2 times 3 tenths equals 6 tenths, and write the product (0.6). The student will be able to explain how to find a quotient. Give students the division problem 0.8704 0.34 (2.56). Have them explain in several sentences how they would find the quotient. Have them show their work. Updated 10/5/2017 12:33 PM 6

Have students pairs draw a 2- by -3 rectangle and write number sentences to describe the rectangle. Ask them to use the terms multiple, factor, and divisible to describe the relationships between the numbers 2and 6. Student will be able to use the key concepts and explain the divisibility rules. Have pairs of students draw sixteen Xs in equal groups in as many different ways as they can. Have them us the terms divisible, factor, and multiple to explain their results. (16 is a multiple of 1, 16, 2, 8 and 4; 16 is divisible by 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16; 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16 are factors of 16.) After reading the divisibility rules and writing a 2 digit number, the student will be able to identify the rule. Have pairs of students look at the table of divisibility rules on page 84. Have them each write a 2- digit number and circle the one digit. Ask, which divisibility rules use the numbers in the one digit? (rules for 2, 5 and 10) Which divisibility rules use the sum of the digits? (rules for 3 and 0) Updated 10/5/2017 12:33 PM 9

Have pairs use grid paper to make many 28- square rectangles as they can. Have them list the factors for 28, classify 28 as composite or prime, and explain the reasoning. Repeat for 17 squares. The student will be able to identify a number as prime or composite. Ask pair of students to explain how to tell whether a number is prime or composite. (sample: Try dividing it by 2, 5, 7, 9 and 10) Then have them to share how they would determine whether 49 is prime or a composite number (Divide by 7; composite). The student will be able to write the prime factorization for a number. Have each student in a pair roll a number cube two times to make a 2- digit number and find the prime factorization for that number. The student with more prime factors in his or her prime factorization scores one point. The student to score five points wins. Updated 10/5/2017 12:33 PM 12

UNIT 5: Lesson 19: Comparing and Ordering (1 week / 5 days) pages 114-118 3. Activities for Understanding SUGGESTIONS Students will be divided in small groups and each group will get catalogs or grocery ads from several different stores. Have them compare prices for several items. Ask, Why do you need to make sure you are comparing the same product and the same size of that item? (The comparison doesn t mean anything if the items are not alike.) Have student list each item and use mathematical symbols to show the comparisons. Students will work in pairs drawing line segments measuring ½, 7/8, 5/8, and ¼ in. Ask them to visually compare the lengths and write the order from least to greatest. Then have them order the fractions using either method on page 115 student book (1/4, ½, 5/8, 7/8.) Students will work in small groups aligning their pencils on a sheet of paper from shortest to longest. Then have them measure each pencil and write its length next to it. Have them write the lengths from least to greatest and note that some of the order depends on only the whole-number part. Updated 10/5/2017 12:33 PM 27
