English/Writing First Six Weeks ASSURANCES By the end of sixth grade, the student will: 1. Select and use different forms of writing for specific purposes such as to influence, inform, and entertain. 2. Respond to prompts representing all purposes and modes, including open-ended responses. 3. Gather facts and draw data from multiple primary and secondary sources, and organize information for compositions using various strategies. 4. Revise and edit writings for accuracy and correctness using various strategies. 5. Apply standard forms of language for effective oral and written communication. After a skill is initially presented at a grade level, it is necessary to reinforce and extend that skill, when appropriate, throughout that grade level to ensure mastery. Language Arts concepts are best taught within a meaningful context. Language Arts materials will be grade level appropriate. Upon completion of grade 6, a student will be reading fluently at a minimum of a 6.9 level. WRITING: LISTENING/SPEAKING Student listens actively and purposefully in a variety of settings, listens critically to analyze and evaluate a speaker s message, listens to enjoy and appreciate spoken language, listens and speaks to gain and share knowledge regarding his or her own culture and that of others, speaks clearly and appropriately to different audiences for different purposes and occasions.
