New Faculty Seminar Presentation 2014 THE NEW. THE FEW. IT MAY COME DOWN TO YOU!
2 A Culture of Preparedness is Really a Mindset- What do you ask yourself when you prepare to teach? Ken Bain
3 The same way you have to prepare yourself to teach; you have to prepare yourself to think in an emergency.
4 The same preparation you take to develop a lesson plan, goals for homework assignments; you have to prepare to act in an emergency.
5 The same way you decide what salient points to include in your lectures; you must decide how to impart to your students the seriousness of responding to you and other college staff in the event of an emergency.
6 The same way you have expectations for student success; the college administration has expectations for you to respond to emergencies.

16 Culture of Preparedness-Knowing the Right Words for the Right Situation
17 Lockdown To remain in a secured classroom, or to find one quickly and go into the lockdown protocol.
18 Shelter-in-Place Necessary when external conditions make it unsafe to leave the building, but where locking down in a classroom is not necessary. A special shelter-in-place is conducted for tornadoes and severe weather conditions.
19 Evacuate Evacuations occur when the school building is not safe, or can be conducted once a lockdown situation is resolved.
Lockdown; Shelter-in-Place; Evacuate 20 A combination of shelter in place and evacuation may be necessary during situations such as earthquakes

22 the human mind must first focus on the problem of how to understand, apply, analyze, synthesize or evaluate something Ken Bain
23 Our responsibilities in the VCCS learning culture do not begin and end at the classroom door.
Emergency preparedness for institutions of higher education has been an ever growing concern since 9/11. College staff and faculty have been tasked with being more involved with students and incidents on college campuses. How do you continue the educational process and maintain a safe work environment in the face of campus crisis? How do you foster a culture of preparedness in your classrooms and on your campuses? 24
You must develop the mindset to embrace the potential for emergencies that will occur on your campus or in your classroom. 25 The Culture of Preparedness begins with you and passes to your students and ultimately the college community.
