We fee l strongly that an Acting Internship in Medicine will be an important part of your last year in Medical School, no matte r what your future plans may be. Opportunities Acting Interns at University Hospitals Case Medical Center (UHCMC) have the opportunity to work one-on-one with a resident and treat patients in an academ ic and tertia ry ca re-oriented environment. Acting Interns at the Veteran 's Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) will experience a great deal of autonomy in treati ng and ca ring for a complex population. Educational Activities Daily resident and professor run rou nds Daily noon conferences Weekly Intern Morning Report Weekly Acting Intern Conference Letter of Recommendation The AI Clerkship Director (Dr. Smith), Resi dency Program Director (Dr. Armitage) and Chairman of the Department of Medicine (Dr. Walsh) are delighted to write letters of recommendation on behalf of any student who completes an Acting Inte rnsh ip at either UHCMC or the VAMC. AI positions are offered during every rotation block, both at the VA and UHCMC, except for Block 7 (the winte r holiday block). These positions will be filled in a first-com e first-served manner and represent a commitment to the Department of Medicine for a one month clerksh ip.

When requesting your AI, be sure to look at your personal schedule to make sure it doesn't conflict with your rotation. Also consider that the AI includes the last weekend and please include this into your personal planning. Dropping Once you have signed up, you must get a signature from either Or. Smith or Dr. Armitage to drop the AI. Dropping your AI should not be done less than four weeks prior to the start of your AI. In the July and August Blocks dropping will not be permitted. Confirmation and Communication Upon registering. the Chief Resident will send an email confirming your commitment to the Department of Medicine. Another email one week before your rotation will be sent with specific information about your AI. Notify the Registrar's Office upon learning your AI has been confirmed. Also, add your AI rotation to your CAS account.

As an Acting Intern, you are equivalent to the interns and as such follow the interns' schedule. The Interns and Acting Interns are scheduled to begin on the first Monday of the rotation and the rotation will end four weeks later on Sunday evening. Goal Dropping Policy - Dropping this elective requires four weeks notice and in some cases (Blocks 1 and 2), dropping is prohibited In order to drop with less than the prescribed notice, an explanatory email from the registrar and society dean should be sent to the AI Director and Administrator. Special Consideration for July and A ugust - July and August blocks have a DIFFERENT drop policy. In order to give all students an equal chance for an AI in July or August, this rotation may not be dropped once you are registered This elective will prepare the student for the responsibility they will have as interns working in a hospital setting Objectives: The student will function as an acting intern under a supervisory resident and attending in one of eight UH inpatient teams or one of four VA inpatient teams. act as the primary doctor for their patients, know their patients thoroughly, and develop their management plans. present their patients and have considered differential diagnosis and management plans for their patients during dally resident and attending rounds. attend all conferences with interns and senior resident as well as those assigned by the AI Director. become knowledgeable about common inpatient conditions, learn differential diagnosis and management of these conditions and learn how to work through more difficult and complicated cases. Complete a Blackboard-based curriculum emphasizing the CDIM Subinternship learning objectives. Preferences are considered on a first-come, first-served basis. Preferences wi ll be considered up to two weeks before the start of the AI.
