Important: Mindtap is an application by the publisher that includes six months access to an electronic version of the text book and also includes study aids and tests which will count toward your final grade. You will need Mindtap by the end of the second week of class. The Mindtap access card is available at the Bookstore, and from the publisher. You might want to check to see which is less expensive. Be certain that you purchase the Mindtap access card for this particular class. If you purchase the wrong card you will not be able to access the website this class will be using and you may have difficulty getting a refund from other venders. There will be a posting on D2L further down the syllabus instructing you on how to activate Mindtap for this class. REQUIRED #2 The Declaration of Independence & The United States Constitution and its Amendments an inexpensive pamphlet ($1) is available at the book store, or available free of charge on-line (search the internet) 1

2 SYLLABUS - This is the syllabus for this course. You are required to read, be familiar with, and understand this syllabus. You are bound by the syllabus, and expected to follow its dictates and requirements. If a student has a question about any aspect of this course they are strongly urged to consult the syllabus before contacting the instructor. The syllabus will likely have the answer to your question. If after you have consulted the syllabus you still have a question, you are encouraged to speak with the instructor before or after class, or to email the instructor. Goals of the course: To successfully complete the course, a student will need to have and display a basic understanding of the History, Goals, and Parts of the Criminal Justice System. A student should be aware of, and be able to discuss how the Constitution of the United States and its amendments shapes and affects the Criminal Justice System, and be able to relate how different actors and agencies in the Criminal Justice System interact, as well as how politics affects how those actors perform their jobs. Attendance: Attendance is important, and is REQUIRED. If you do not attend, you will still be fully responsible for all lectures, material, quizzes, and assignments. A large portion of material will be presented in lecture that will not be in the readings, and you will have great difficulty answering certain quiz and exam questions if you did not attend certain lectures. Regular attendance is required for a passing grade. If you do not attend on a certain day, arrange to get the notes from a fellow classmate. You are expected to, and required to attend only the section of the class for which you are registered unless you receive permission from the instructor Communicating with your instructor: Email and U.S. Postal Service letters are the ways to communicate with the instructor. Email is the preferred mode. Contacting an individual student or contacting the entire class can be extremely important to the instructor and to the student. This is best accomplished by the instructor through the use of email. The university provides the instructor with the official email address the student may have. You are expected to check your official email address as registered with the University regularly and often. Be careful of any email screening programs or SPAM filters you may use, and if you have your email forwarded from one account to another be sure that you will still receive any communication or response from the instructor. It should also be noted that the instructor is hard-of-hearing, and as such a student needs to speak loudly and clearly in order to be understood. The instructor is not an attorney and therefore cannot answer legal questions, but will answer academic questions. Students with a Disability: Please see the instructor before or after class, or in the instructors office with your SAC form to discuss any special needs you may have. Disabled students are encouraged to speak with the instructor for the purpose of accommodations concerning note taking and examinations. It is the responsibility of the student to make the necessary arrangements with the instructor and with SAC. Accommodations should be made well in advance of all examinations. When a quiz or examination is done on D2L the SAC student shall make all responses to questions on D2L. The appropriate amount of time for each SAC student will be programed into D2L for each quiz or examination. Submitting your answers to the instructor by any means other than D2L will result in you receiving a zero for the quiz or examination, as the instructor will not grade quizzes or examinations by hand. D2L: D2L shall be used for this course. It is your responsibility as a student to check D2L daily. Important announcements may be made to the class on the course/section home page from time to time. You shall be held responsible to read and understand any announcements, and you will be held responsible for any information, action, etc. that an announcement may require of you. Announcements may be updated, or deleted, or changed at any time at the sole discretion of the instructor. There may be study materials associated with this course on D2L both in the Content section (Games and additional assignments) and in the Quizzes section (practice quizzes). You are expected to use those materials in furtherance of gaining understanding of the material and showing your mastery of the material. 2

3 Mindtap: Mindtap is an internet application associated with the publisher of the textbook. You will need to register with the Mindtap website to access a variety of activities which will constitute 20% of your final grade. It is essential that you have access to the Mindtap website from the end of the second week on. A schedule showing the times that post-quizzes open and close on Mindtap is listed on the Content page of D2L under the topic of Syllabus and Office Hours. You may take post-quizzes up to three times, with the highest grade of the three counting toward your final course grade. There will be NO reminders by the instructor to complete your post-quizzes it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to remember to complete them. Quizzes and Examinations: There will be two quizzes which will be given on D2L. Each quiz will count for 15% of your final course grade. There will be a Midterm Examination that will count for 25% of your final course grade. The Final Examination will count the remaining 25% of your final course grade, and will be cumulative. The dates and times of which each D2L quiz will be open are posted on the schedule in the syllabus. You will be allowed only one attempt at each quiz. Each quiz will be timed. The clock on the quiz does not stop once you have started the quiz. Make sure that any and all matters of personal necessity have been taken care of before attempting any quiz. It is important to understand and remember that if you do not save your answers and D2L auto-submits your quiz or exam when time runs out, you may receive a zero on that quiz or examination. There will be no make-up of any quizzes or exams missed by the due dates except under very exceptional circumstances (the instructor is the sole judge as to what constitutes very exceptional circumstances). The dates and times available to take quizzes or examinations on D2L are very clearly stated in the Schedule section of the syllabus. No excuse of ignorance as to date and time will be accepted. Special care should be taken in noting whether a quiz or exam opens or closes at a certain time marked am or pm. There will be NO reminders by the instructor to complete your quizzes it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to remember to complete the quizzes and exams. All students are expected to appear on campus for the class, and as such should not find it impossible to take their quizzes or exams (when on D2L) on a computer on campus. If a quiz is taken in a computer lab, help is present right there. I will deny any and all requests to make up a quiz where a plea is made in reference to a broken computer, unreliable computer, slow, poor, or broken connection, or other technical problem when the quiz is attempted on any computer other than a University computer hardwired to the University system. If you cannot access D2l, You must immediately telephone the help center at 229-4040, or report in person to a University computer lab for assistance in gaining D2L access. Failure to do so will not be an acceptable excuse for missing quizzes or exams. Quizzes and Examinations taken on D2L, or in class, shall be timed. The time given to complete the quiz or Examination may vary one to another and that amount of time shall be at the sole discretion of the instructor. It is important to understand and remember that if you do not save your answers and D2L auto-submits your quiz or exam when time runs out, you may receive a zero on that quiz or examination. The form an Examination takes will be decided solely by the instructor. The Examination may take the form of a Blue-Book Examination taken in the classroom, a Scantron Examination taken in the classroom, a D2L form of Examination taken on-line, or any other form of examination as the instructor may choose. The type of examination, and the time or time of availability of the examination will be announced at least one week prior to any examination. Specific instructions for an exam may be posted on D2L. These instructions must be followed exactly for your grade to count. If you will have a conflict with the exam schedule, please transfer to another section where the problem will not occur. University policy as indicated in the schedule of classes places the onus upon each individual student to avoid any conflict in exam schedules when signing up for their courses. Only under the most pressing of necessities (emergency hospitalization of the student, a death in the family, or other equally catastrophic occurrence) will anyone be allowed to take an exam early, late, or out of section. The instructor shall be the sole judge of what constitutes necessity. A vacation or trip is 3

NOT a pressing necessity. 4 There will not be any in-class review for the Mid-Term, or for the Final Examination. Study Aids During Quizzes or Examinations: No notes, books, study aides, or collaboration shall be allowed for any quizzes or examinations. Violation of this requirement is academic misconduct. Make-up of Quizzes and Examinations: Except under extraordinary circumstances beyond the control of the student, quizzes and examinations will not be made up; a zero will be given. In those instances where a quiz or examination may be made up, the student must notify the instructor promptly, and request to make up the missed quiz or examination promptly, and take the make-up quiz or examination promptly or it shall not be made up at all. The instructor shall be the sole judge as to what constitutes promptly. In the case of missing a Mid-term or Final Examination you must notify the instructor as soon as is practicable under the circumstances. Failure to promptly notify the instructor of the reason for missing the exam (even if legitimate) may result in a denial to make-up the exam. The instructor shall be the sole judge as to what constitutes or defines promptly. When an exam is allowed to be taken as a make-up, a medical or other excuse must be presented and the examination must be taken promptly. In the event that the Mid-term or Final Examination is missed without good reason (the instructor is the sole judge as to whether a reason is a good reason or not.), or where an excusable reason is not promptly communicated or make-up examination not promptly taken (The instructor shall be the sole judge as to what constitutes promptly ), a zero will be given for the examination. No make-up of an exam will be allowed if it is missed without good reason. Make up examinations will only be given in the instructor s office. The instructor reserves the right to determine the form of any make up examination, and a make-up examination may be, but is not limited to blue-book, essay, scantron, or a D2L based examination, regardless of the form in which the examination was originally given. It is potentially possible to make up a missed quiz or examination if you have an excuse from a doctor or medical facility ( per history excuses are not acceptable), your place of employment, the court in which you were required to appear, or a copy of the subpoena which required your presence elsewhere, or a copy of the police accident or incident report that confirms your reason. Also excusable is an excuse, or notification, by a University official, coach, or other proper authority that confirms and requires your appearance at an officially sanctioned University event. Athletes who miss a quiz or examination for a sanctioned event must notify the instructor before the event, and must promptly make up that quiz or examination. To make up any quiz or exam, you must submit an email requesting to make up the quiz or exam and explain whatever circumstance caused you to miss the exam or quiz, including a reason why you were legitimately unable to take the quiz. A student wishing to make up a quiz or examination must officially communicate the request to the instructor by email, and following tentative approval (by email), any and all documentation you have must be submitted to the instructor in his office, during office hours only, before the quiz or exam will be given for make-up. GRADING: Grading will use approved UW-M grades which include pluses (+) and minuses (-), with the exceptions that there are no grades of A+, nor F+ nor F-. Percentage grades shall compute to letter grades as follows: 93% thru 100% = A 90% thru 92.99999% = A- 87% thru 89.99999% = B+ 83% thru 86.99999% = B 80% thru 82.99999% = B- 77% thru 79.99999% = C+ 73% thru 76.99999% = C 70% thru 72.99999% = C- 67% thru 69.99999% = D+ 63% thru 66.99999% = D 4

60% thru 62.99999% = D- 0% thru 59.99999% = F 5 Grades will be based upon the conditions posted within this syllabus, or in special instances by University policy when those policies may apply. There is no extra work, extra assignment, extra credit, or other such opportunity for a student to attempt to raise their grade. The instructor does not round off grades. A student may appeal a grade on the grounds that it is based on a capricious or arbitrary decision of the course instructor. Such an appeal shall follow the established procedures adopted by the department, college, or school in which the course resides. These procedures are available in writing from the respective department chairperson or the Academic Dean of the School. Cell Phones, Pagers, etc.: Cell phones, pagers, and any equipment, electronic or otherwise, capable of communicating with another person by voice, text, or any other means, including but not limited to cell phones, PDA s, computers, or other equipment capable of communicating by means of radio waves, infrared, Bluetooth, or any other means, are subject to the following conditions in class: During a lecture: The device(s) shall be in a silent, or vibrate mode, so as not to disturb your classmates. It is improper to answer or carry on a conversation in class on your device. In some very few, very limited cases of extreme importance exceptions may be allowed if the matter is discussed prior to class with the instructor. The Instructor is exempt from these requirements. Google Glasses : may not be worn in class at any time. If possessed in class they must be turned off. During Quizzes or Examinations: Any and all devices shall be stowed away in your purse, backpack, or otherwise not visible or accessible to you, and without fail they will be turned off. Any devices that are visible shall be deemed as cheating. The Instructor is exempt from these requirements. Cheating / Academic Misconduct: The university has a responsibility to promote academic honesty and integrity and to develop procedures to deal effectively with instances of academic dishonesty. Students are responsible for the honest completion and representation of their work, for the appropriate citation of sources, and for respect of others academic work. Anyone deemed by the instructor to be cheating shall receive a failing grade for the course, and shall be referred to the University for appropriate discipline. Any and all quizzes, examinations, papers, assignments, or responses with clickers or on D2L, shall solely be done, submitted, or used by the student who will receive credit for the quiz, examination, paper, assignment, or response. Any violation of this policy will be deemed cheating by the student submitting the quiz, examination, paper, assignment, or response, and also be deemed cheating on the part of the student receiving credit for the quiz, examination, paper, assignment, or response. The instructor will be the sole decision-maker as to the cheating in regards to the failing course grade. University authorities will be the decision-makers in regard to University discipline. Class Participation: Participation is vital for an interesting class. The only stupid question is the question that remains unasked. All points of view will be respected, subject to intelligent and respectful discussion or disagreement. You are expected to have read and to be familiar with the assigned material for that days class, and be ready to respond when called upon to explain, interpret, or discuss the material. To assist in the goal of achieving participation in class, it is expected that students will fill the classroom from the front of the room, not from the back. Changes in the Syllabus: It is the intention of the instructor that the syllabus shall not be changed during the semester. However, for any reason of necessity or exigency, anything and everything in the syllabus is subject to change at any time by the instructor alone. Changes shall be announced on D2L, or in class, or both. Announcements to the class may be made in class, on D2L, or both. Religious Observances: Students will be allowed to complete examinations or other requirements that are missed due to a religious observance. Students are requested to notify the instructor before any 5

6 religious observance absence in order to make proper arraignments as may be needed for examinations. Sexual Harassment: Sexual harassment is reprehensible and will not be tolerated by the university. It subverts the mission of the university and threatens the careers, educational experience and wellbeing of students, faculty, and staff. The university will not tolerate behavior between or among members of the university community which creates an unacceptable working environment. Complaint Procedures: Students may direct complaints to the head of the academic unit or department in which the complaint occurs. If the complaint allegedly violates a specific university policy, it may be directed to the head of the department or academic unit in which the complaint occurred or to the appropriate university office responsible for enforcing the policy. Other University Policies: In this course, all University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Helen Bader School of Social Welfare policies will be strictly adhered to. It is the student's responsibility to be familiar with these policies and how they may affect him/her.
